I actually read Daughter of the Empire and the next two books before I read Magician. I didn't even know about Magician until years later. It gave me a completely different perspective on the "Barbarians" and the "Alien Invaders".
I dunno if David Gemmel has been mentioned but he's an awesome author too. I really like his Troy trilogy.

I haven't had time to think this one through but what about a gold:xp conversion with exponentially decreasing returns?
Would that even be something that players want? It would be a nice way to take out a big chunk of xp that's needed for levelling in the low-mid 30's.

It could be a good gold sink though if some other stuff were added like "GG Grenades" from Infantry Online. They cost a bomb, don't do any damage. but when you kill someone and throw a GG grenade, they will cry at the sight of the Neon Green "GG" floating into the air.

If it happened for 1-2 rounds that's not too bad as people like to mess around sometimes - just check out the videos on YouTube to see evidence of that - but if it's more than that I'd be asking them to change servers or play properly.
