I actually have a furnace(my dad but hey) and an anvil and all the tools to do this shit! It's heavy work but rewarding aswell, if it wasn't such a hassle rigging it up and shit I mightve done it some more, didn't get any further then making a small curved knife. (curve was accident but decided to keep it) ribonnet(i think it's the word? Those bolts they use on say titanic and other ships) a wooden handle on it and boom, knife! Was rewarding after a few hours of heating - hammering - heathing- hammering - heathing etc to finally have your product in your hands.

Manly man work aswell!

its just sooo primal: forging a steel weapon out of dirt.

as far as I understand, the secret is the materials used, the amount of them materials and how the materials are mixed or joined together. I find it incredible fascinating even though im no smith, can watch it for hours.

and yes I don't think it can get any more manly :D

Its crazy, I saw a docu about it once, the vikings had no mines so they just pulled some dirt out of the marshy ground and put it in the furnace and voila! A big chunk of metal, ofcourse still fairly raw but the amount  that came out of only say a hand full was enormous! My face literwlly went like  wot!

I just used iron plates though, actually making the materials from scratch is way above my capabilities!, heated it up, cut it with some sort of hydrolic press cutter my dad uses for god knows what, and had the rough shape, then its just hammering away, allthough neither of us knew how to properly forge I later checked vids, also this thread I probably have watched every vid , and learned about folding and all those techniques to make it harder and less brittle. Havent had the chance, or time, to put it to the test though.
but my knife still stands, it still cuts aswell(just checked it lol) allthough it looks a bit wonky it's sturdy!  :D

Thinking back on this makes the fingers itch

Yeah, creating a metal bar out from dirt is just amazing.

But all the work with it, especially using traditional methods. Sheesh, even thinking about it gives me a feel I'm sweating.

No doubt, but I also think that that is a part of the satisfaction doing these things, doing something that hundreds of years ago was a common thing!, and as you don't do it for a living but rather as a hobby makes it enjoyable!
I for one had a lot of fun, even though it mainly consists of heating up to the right color, hammering- rinse and repeat. It just has a feeling to it, seeing an item being made from raw material!

Ps: sry im bad at splitting my WoT's up in smaler pieces :P

Yeah I know the feeling, I always wanted to create a bow for myself, and learn fletching but never really got around it, I even remember having a topic about it here somewhere.

Would love to do that but yeah, Either I'm lazy or I dunno

I guess it's mainly setting it up and having the tools at hand to get started, for me its way more likely to start something if you can just hop on the wagon, instead of having to spend countless hours preparing.

Its like having bought a game but rather playing an other game because you can't be arsed to install it.
