General Off Topic / Internet Pirating Controls

Just saw this on bbc:

Verizon to choke pirates' browsing speeds

Verizon has said it will first warn repeat offenders by email and voicemail.

Then it will restrict or "throttle" their internet connection speeds.

Time Warner Cable, another US internet service provider (ISP) pledging to tackle piracy, says it will use pop-up warnings to deter repeat offenders.

After that it will restrict subscribers' web browsing activities by redirecting them to a landing page.

The moves come as part of a concerted effort by five major US ISPs - AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon - to bear down on illegal downloading and sharing of copyrighted material.

In September 2011, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) teamed up with the ISPs to launch the Center for Copyright Information, a body dedicated to deterring copyright infringement and advising consumers on legal file sharing options.

Verizon and Time Warner unveiled their latest anti-piracy plans at a panel discussion hosted by the Internet Society in New York on Thursday.

Dubbed the "six-strikes" policy, referring to the number of warnings pirates may receive, the campaign is due to kick off in full from the end of November, according to file-sharing news site TorrentFreak.

But the industry freely admits that the campaign is unlikely to deter "hardcore" pirates, who can easily circumvent the copyright alert system by setting up virtual private networks.

It claims the campaign is aimed at educating mainstream consumers who may not even realise they are doing something illegal.

While the industry maintains it has no plans to take legal action against persistent offenders, observers believe it remains the ultimate sanction.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which campaigns for digital freedom, is highly critical of the imminent campaign, saying: "Big media companies are launching a massive peer-to-peer surveillance scheme to snoop on subscribers."

ISPs will be acting as "Hollywood's private enforcement arm", it added.

So how many of you in the US will notice the effects of this?  :P Hope they don't introduce similar things here.

The Final Countdown – Guild Wars 2 Launch Times
by davidc on August 13, 2012

August 28th, 2012—the day Guild Wars 2 launches—is fast approaching. Everyone here at ArenaNet is anxiously counting the days right along with every Guild Wars 2 fan. In just a few weeks, the servers will go live and each of us will be setting out on our adventures in Tyria!
As you may have seen, we host a countdown timer on the front page of our official website. The information below will give you specific details about times and dates based on whether you pre-purchased, pre-ordered, or are picking up a copy of the game on release day.

Pre-Purchase with 3-Day Headstart: Everyone who pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 will enjoy three full days of Headstart Access. The three-day Headstart Access will officially begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 25th. However, please note that in order to ensure that we’re fully prepared for that fateful hour we may bring servers online up to 3 hours prior. If you’re a player committed to getting in first to grab that character name of your dreams you’ll want to be keeping an eye on things during that time period.

Pre-Order with 1-Day Headstart: Those who pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 will be able to participate in one day of Headstart Access. The one-day Headstart Access will begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 27th. NOTE – Pre-Order code registration is now enabled.
For those players who have not pre-purchased or pre-ordered the game, Guild Wars 2 will officially launch at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 28th.

Download the Client today: If you’ve registered your pre-purchase or pre-order and created your Guild Wars account you can go to account management today and download the client. Be sure to update the client periodically to minimize your download at launch.
We look forward to seeing you in-game very soon!

General Discussion / Banner System
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:21:15 am »
There are 147 new banner slots which are only available through the website for clans. Because there is only a limited amount available the right to use them is sold through auctions (new auctions are currently added at a faster rate than normally). To keep your right to use an exclusive banner you need to win such an auction every 30 days.

Once you own an exclusive banner the clan leader (anyone with rank 10) can upload the banner image on the website. They are automatically updated by the launcher. All clan members are balanced using this exclusive banner no one else is able to use.

09:09 <Vibe> chadz, what's the cost of renewal
09:09 <Vibe> for banner slot
09:09 <chadz> you have to bid again
09:10 <chadz> although it doesn't really matter if you get the same or another banner

We might establish some rules about.. aesthetics

What's definately a no go is porn, racism, crap like that.
(*edit*disclaimer: i don't think porn is crap, but there are several laws in place that can get us in trouble if we don't forbid it)

If you upload a banner like that you will probably get banned for a long, long time.

it's not really intended to be a money sink. There are 147 additional banners available, so they are limited. The fairest way to decide who is by using the auction system. If everything works, one new banner auction pops up per hour until all are filled.

Ok so I have a few questions about the new banner system. It seems like a good idea but there are just a few concerns about the implementation at the moment.

Is there any regulation?
Whilst my banner pack could be loose on its regulation it at least had some restrictions. This system could mean people could scribble in paint and then upload a banner. There's also nothing to stop offensive banners. I am pretty sure most of us would at least like some level of quality as there was at least an option between mine and draggon's banner packs previously.

Auctioning them off. Is it the best way?
Why pay out a huge chunk of money to keep a slot? I know there are lots of them but at the moment a bunch of them are going for 100k. Seems like this may disadvantage newer clans if they have to fork out. I seriously disapprove of having to make a payment for this although I see the advantage of having to 'renew' it as that will filter out disbanded clans, but even that shouldn't involve payment.

If a slot is freed up is it automatically re-added to the auction immediately?

Do heraldic backgrounds change in game with each new banner that is updated?

I think that's most of my questions about this system. Nice to see you can join different clans with different alts. Something I was hoping would be in  :)

General Discussion / Rageball Goalkeeper
« on: April 11, 2012, 03:25:01 pm »
Why the heck is this allowed? Half the time I was being shot at whilst trying to get the ball to put it back into play after a scored goal. There were two Draconian guys in particular who made it their lifes aim to kill me over and over as goalkeeper. I don't play rageball often but this has put me off it a bit. It's just a bit stupid. In that first screenshot you can see 5 ranged shooting me all at once (the jumping guy is a thrower and guy with cleaver had a bow):

I can see how it could possibly make sense when the ball is close. But it was at the other end of the pitch  :|

This guy was griefing me on rageball and team attacked me until I reported him to 4/5. He was stepping in front of my shots so he could report me back and eventually get me kicked. He kept following me around so not much I could do. When he started doing this he was moaning about how he hated archers.
