I am studying my next year of uni in Utrecht. Anyone ever been there / know anything about the place?

The only time I've had Dutch beer was a warm can of Oranjeboom while I was hanging out my own arse. And I'm learning a few Dutch basics but will hopefully pick more up over the year.

according to what i heard, dutch is a pretty complicated language, but im sure you will do it :)

Im here for history primarily as well as culture and language.  Looking forward to studying at a good university for free, if only for a year.  Maybe get out snd visit some other countries if there's time.

Cannot wait it will be soooo sweet.

Wait, Utrecht is considered a good university in Britain? Your top universities are most likely much better, Cambridge and Oxford at least and probably a lot of others. . The only Dutch university that does somewhat well in international rankings is Leiden, my university 8-)

As for the city, Utrecht is fucking awesome. Very nice old city center with a great vibe, nice for a history student too. Not an inbred student only city like some others, but enough student activity to keep things alive. Expensive to live in though. Dunno how you will be living or if anyone is showing you around, but student fraternities are quite a big thing in Dutchland and contacting one of them might help you in having a good time.

If you're actually trying to learn the language, you should probably ask people to talk Dutch to you, I've often heard the complaint from international students that they can't learn any Dutch because everybody just talks English to them. English level is pretty good especially in the student population, some with horrific accents though, at least in my ears.

According to the international university rankings utrecht is the second best uni in the netherlands behind twente and above  leiden. Either way its a better uni than Swansea,  where I currently study, and I get to go for free.  Language acquisition would be nice but my main interest is of course culture and history.  Will also do some touring by road bike and rail.

Well i already got a friend there, he is studying engineering, thought i don't know what i wanna do yet, but definitely something with computing, i still need to finish one more year of computer operator then ill move up.

And yes, will be my first year :)

actually I believe germans are very happy when somebody speaks their language, they don't care if you suck at it or not.

eg: 'Ich bin ein berliner'

A friend of mine studies in Utrecht, and has an appartement there, I myself live in Hilversum :)
Utrecht aint so bad to study, and I'm wondering if you liked your year there, since its now 1.5yrs later!

Mostly just at the bars around Neude square during the day, i went to amsterdam in the evening to stay with a friend there.  Kingsnight i was everywhere, but i couldn't name a single bar i ended up in!

Well I could maybe have seen you in Amsterdam, I was there for a short while, then came back to hilversum to do shrooms :)
parties everywhere though, doesnt matter who you were, you could come in and were treated friendly mosty
Sound systems were all over Hilversum, and some DJ's even performed in the market area.

Utrecht mustve been crowded, some friends of mine went there, got absolutely wasted on all sorts of stuff, only heard from them 1.5 days after kingsday, they had some kinda blackout lol
