lvl46 Norn Ranger

Been playing this game with a fucking vengeance. Having played the original and a score of other MMOs.. I have to say that GW2 is not that good, but then again I think every other MMO is garbage. The scale of the story and world is certainly impressive but the combat seems simplified -- blah blah blah combos/conditions/boons whatever, it all comes down to a DPS clusterfuck. Combat is largely inferior and outdated compared to a game like DCU.

The armors also look pretty retarded. I've been wearing the Hall of Monuments look since lvl1 because everything else looks dumb.

27 Human Thief.

But some crazy fucking Korean is at lvl 80... I can't even begin to understand how that is possible. We saw him running around Divinities Reach and about 30 people just started chasing him typing "THAT IS UNPOSSIBURU!!!!!!!!!!!"

But yeah... how in fuck is it possible, he only had about 48 hours by that point. Also it wasn't a "test" toon or anything like that, was apparently legit. It's not stoping Ilse of Janthir getting it's arse handed to it in the wvw though.

I'm enjoying the game though which is nice, I didn't think I would, but I'll probably quit in a week. I always do... I hope...

Story 26
Cleared the first 3 areas and 80% the 4th, I think my ignorance of crafting is what's causing my level to be "low" considering the amount of crap I've done.

There's an exploit that I saw a lot of people farming in one of the Kryta areas where you could farm an event over and over again by standing at a boss's spawn point in a cave while attacking over and over. I also heard over chat that there was a way to get a ridiculous amount of XP (exploit) by just crafting certain things and some French guy did it for the last 30-40 levels or something.

Only lvl 18 here. Kind of dislike the fact that you have to go to other race's zones to not be underleveled. Completed Queensdale 100% (+ crafting, +100% Divinity's Reach) and I was barely lvl 15, which is the minimum for Kessex Hills and even then there was only one lvl 15 Heart, rest is all 17+...

Definitely not the best leveling flow I've seen in a game but I guess it doesn't bother me THAT much.

Hm, I did no crafting but did all the hearts in Queensdale then went to Kessex Hills at level 14, with no problems.

Maybe it just varies depending on how many events you do?

Well I don't really repeat dynamic events that I've already gone through, maybe that's that? Would prefer going to the other zone then. If you went to Kessex at 14 I'm sure you were quickly underleveld for the events there, as there is only one lvl 15 Heart, rest is higher. I'm not having problems killing higher level mobs and stuff, it just bothers me.

Common misconception. Hearts are not suppsoed to be the primary form of exp and finishing them all does not mean you're done with the area. The main leveling source is events, think about hearts as waypoints around the map to get you moving. Sometimes you got to repeat events, sometimes you have to run around to find some. Add collecting crafting materials, personal story...
Guild Wars is diffrent and got to get used to it. ;)

I don't think it should be that way. Why can't I do all the hearts and Dynamic events along the way and get enough EXP for the next zone? I don't think I should have to look and kind of grind em to be leveled for next area.

I'm level 21 at the moment and have done 3 of the starter zones which was Norn, Asura, and Human and Half of Sylvari.

Well actually upon entering Kessex Hills there was a long like 4 event chain, so I did them and quickly hit level 16 as I completed most of the hearts while doing the events. Add bouncing back to the level 15 hearts I missed and then farming some more events and I was level 17 in no time.

That is probably it, I mean I do events over and over. It isn't too big of a deal though, I guess if you don't like repeating events you could just go to the other zones as you did.

There are just so many events in Kessex Hills at least that it is extremely easy just to farm them.

I've never had to repeat events unless by accident which only happened with 1-2 where I happened to be passing through and it counted me. Hearts + exploring + events once over is more than enough to get the xp needed for the next area.

Kessex Hills is a bit odd in that the level requirement suddenly gets a lot steeper. Once you go into the other areas from Kessex Hills it seems to be a lot more sensible. I struggled at first at Kessex and only really managed by sticking with groups to level on the harder tasks. After that I've had no trouble and the leveling requirement suddenly got a lot more consistent. I think it was levels 15-19 I struggled most to get without dying excessively so far.

I killed a lvl65 world boss dragon with like 30 other people. It basically stands there while you DPS him for 45 minutes. It doesn't even attack or do any damage to you. Every 5ish minutes he spawns mobs by his feet that literally kill themselves and spews poison gas pools by his feet. The game is a ranged/cast-fest anyways so you just stand in front of him and pewpew. I guess they want you to use these turrets that's set up but they're pretty useless because they do like 700 dmg every 2 seconds while each player probably averages almost 1k a second. They also are targeted by reocurring mobs and they get destroyed easily so there's really no point in using them since they do piss for damage anyway. There's also this "mega asura cannon" that shoots at him every 10ish minutes if you waste your time defending it, when it fires it stuns him for like 2 seconds and that's it lol. A huge "epic" fight must be rewarding though right? Wrong, you get 8k XP (you get 9.5k doing heart quests) and a random crappy drop. Not even an achievement.. lol.

From what I've observed so far (lvl67 PVE only), by simplifying the game by reducing combat effects to boons/conditions and getting rid of dedicated classes it only turned the game into a mindless and huge DPS clusterfuck. This is especially true in WvW except there's a semblance of overarching strategy involved on top of the "whoever has the most numbers on + who can spam the shit out of 1234 more." I hope arena matches prove to be more dynamic but I have my doubts.

Staying under leveled is the only way to play IMO. At least then the PVE combat is a bit dicey and hard. I tend to go for places 10 levels higher but I've got to go on a lumber jack and bronz binge because of this stupid market being stupid down! STUPID!

@Billy - Crafting so far has been the easiest way to power level for me. Once I hit 75 skill on huntsman and 75 on leather working I should boost a shit load of levels in a couple min :P I'm sitting on well over 300 of each of the 75+ crafting essentials for both those skills and I've got a couple of boosts to give me about 150% xp boost from crafting so... shits going to get retarded, wololo.

I do agree though, most of the time it's just a shinny rainbow of bullshit. I'm enjoying the main quest chain, it's not the best written gaming experience I've ever had but it's not awful, and I'm used to awful being the default mode for MMO "stories". Playing a Human Theif and doing the Whispers guild quest chain yeilds some funny moments.

I'm digging the thief I like ninjering about and in wvw I kill anyone I catch on there own, I love going invisible and being a complete douche :D Had a great one the other day where as my team rounded a corner I through down an invisiblity buff for the team and then powered out into the open and 4 dudes came chasing after me back intot the buff. I vanish, then the buff goes down and I'm standing there with 10 people, needless to say they got pwned :D

That said most of the time lag wipes me out in wvw, I'm squishy and I need to be able to dodge and have some semblance of timing to my dodges and attacks so the lag mixed with the cluster fuck "every dude with ranged is spewing movement cripling debuffs" resaults in me basically just running around picking off weak targets.

wvw can best be sumerisied for me with the line "run away!"

@gnjus ditch the short bow and go for duel pistols, unfortunatly the bow becomes awful rather quickly where as the pistols combo well with the thiefs over arching set of skills and shit, and it's fun going pewpewpewpewpewpewpew.

I don't find the game all that great to be honest, I only play it when I'm bored.

It's nothing new same ol MMO but I didn't expect anything more as I played in the BWEs. I bought it for a game to waste time in which is what I've been doing while bored. Only level 25 at the moment as a Human Ranger.

Sure hope so. Now I have a feeling that they're actually quite rare, I might stumble upon an even or two here and ther, but they sure don't chain very often and they sure as hell don't reset very fast.

I think 1-40 is dominated by doing the heart quests and events become more and more available in the later half. The first 75-80 and 80 zone you run into during the story quests don't even have any hearts at all and are 100% events only. I did the first event chain in Cursed Shore as a fresh 79 and by the time it was done I had well over what I needed to get to 80.

You can use the Transmutation Stone to combine two items, keeping the appearance from one and the stats from the second. You get it as reward for completing areas fully or you can buy it in the gem store for cheap.

I tried changing my password to have 64 characters and I copied it and pasted it for a password change, it accepted it. I then pasted it into my email then tried to login and said it was invalid.

I think it was only accepted like half of it, I think there may be a limit to the amount of characters in a password which is stupid. Now I gotta send in a support ticket which I did yesterday and ask for a password reset since they have it disabled due to the amount of people who've been getting hacked recently and wait for the slow customer support.

I've yet to be hacked....this is the first game I've ever had troubles with it, I should be able to put in 128 and have it still accepted and work fine. God damn GW2.

Finally got to 400 Leather Working and now have 3 Exotic items.. can't seem to turn a profit with them on the TP (at least not substantially) so I guess grinding the gold for mats to make them is the best option :(

I got my full 80/exotic armor set in two days of farming for gold (starting with like 10 silver). It only costs 2.5G a piece in mats. Only need a couple earrings and the Guild Armorer (for the back piece) to finish upgrading and I'll be set I think :D ... unless I want work on getting a legendary weapon but they all look over-the-top-korean-final-fantasy-styled.. I transmuted all my armor/weapons to the Hall of Monuments/Heritage style because the default looks retarded

Go for whatever Exotic (orange) stuff that has the stats you want. It'll be cheaper to farm the mats but not a whole lot cheaper than just buying the item off the trading post. Depending on the item it could only be a 20s difference. Lvl80 oranges give you the best stats, the 80 karma vendors sell oranges too with different inscriptions if you want to go that route. You can start farming for your legendary wep too I guess, need a ton of mystic coins and orichalum (or w/e) ore.. you can also convert mithril into it at the mystic forge or just buy it off the TP if you have the money.

I noticed farming CoF is the way to go apparently and they give you flame charr carvings that are needed for exotics? Anyone got the mats required for a shortbow?

One of them is by the portal in Arah (must have the area captured) and the others are at the god temples (Grenth, Melandru).

Sounds like people use those to salvage for the 400 leather. I've just been farming the Pentinent Way events over and over for drops and mats for the trading post. I can get a good 2G for 1.5 hours of farming. The events retrigger very shortly after eachother over and over and send a ton of mobs at you for you to tag and loot.

It's pretty much dead center of the Cursed Shore lvl80 zone. When you first enter through the gate there's an escort event that takes you to the northern fort/town/thing of Pentinent Way where there's an event to defend it. There's another event that rarely pops up that makes you escort through the southern tunnel which directly leads to the southern fort/town/thing and you have to defend that one as well. The chain moves further south and all the way to Arah but I only go up to this point and back up north.

I go Crit just because I like it more. Both builds are viable though.

I focus on Power --> Precision --> Crit Damage/Chance

My traits are currently -

20/30/15/5 (PvE Build)

20 for Power - Traits (Keen Edge, Piercing Arrows)
30 for Precision - (Pets Prowess, Sharpened Edges, Quick Draw)
15 for Condition Damage - (Shared Anguish) *Mainly took this for the 5 and 15 skills
5 for Vitality - Took it for 5 skill

For skills I use Quickening Zephyr, Sharpened Stones, Signet of Wild, Signet of Wild, Rampaging as One.

P.S - Are you on Crystal Desert? If so whats your name I'll add yah.

Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 Progress
Post by: BaleOhay on September 20, 2012, 01:40:45 am
I use the following with my short bow and like it.

30 marksmen
Signet mastery (signets increase 20% faster)
steady focus (10% damage increase when endurance is full)
signet of the beastmaster (signet active abilities also effect you.. not just the pet)

10 skirmish
companions might (your crit hits give might to your pet)

30 wilderness survival
wilderness knowledge (survival skills recharge 20% faster... which means quickening zephyr)
hide in plain site (invis when you get stunned, knocked back, dazed etc)
shared anguish (stuns etc transfer to your pet instead of landing on you. 90 sec recharge)

Quickening zephyr (love this thing with short bow)
signet of stone
signet of wild
rampage as one

If you fire off rampage and the two signets then hit zephry you hit hard and fast. and with the 20% signet recharge you get to do it pretty often. The survival skills help you get away as needed.

I'm crit so I need 30 Skirmish, also I didn't find Steady Focus to be very good...you should ALWAYS be dodging when you can especially in dungeons so more damage when its full is useless imo.

Not much of a fan of Wilderness Survival but Shared Anguish is nice.
