Suggestions Corner / Stat Lock-In Feature

I was thinking about how the process of improving stats on the cRPG website could itself be improved. Currently, when you assign points to attributes, proficiencies, or skills, the website asks you to confirm your selection. At that point, the stat change is permanent, and only a 50% xp respec, retirement, or training lessons can change that. At the same time, I was wondering how build fuck-ups could be resolved by the user, rather than a trip to IRC. Furthermore, I was also interested in build experimentation: I was having a discussion with San the other day and he said he didn't mind buying Training Lessons right before the WPF change/free global respec patch because it allowed him to try two high-level builds within a few weeks of each other.

Background aside, this is my suggestion: A Stat Lock-In feature on the cRPG website.

Under this Stat Lock-In feature, any stat changes made on the cRPG website would be saved and applied to your character as normal. But those stat changes would not be permanently "locked-in" for a set amount of time, say one hour.

What does this feature achieve?

1) Fuck-ups. Any fuck-ups due to simple human error or patch-changed-an-item-and-now-my-build-is-bundle of sticks-a-mini-respec are now self-resolvable. The user can just reassign points as preferred within the lock-in time (one hour).

2) Build experimentation and refinement. With an hour for any stat changes to be locked-in, players can test builds. "I don't know if I should go 21-18 or 18-21. Oh, I know! I'll test both builds on battle. Even playing for 20 minutes for each build should give me a general sense of the advantages of each build. Then I can just choose the build I want to go with before the lock-in period ends."

3) Buyer's Remorse. Somewhat overlaps with Fuck-ups and Build experimentation/refinement, but worth noting. Most cRPG players have probably had an instance in which they regret the way they specced a character. This feature will partially address that (Remorse felt after the lock-in period can be addressed by the standard xp respec/retire/training lessons avenues).

Addressing Abusability

This feature shouldn't be abusable as conceived. With only an hour-long lock-in period, players would only have a limited amount of time to test, refine, and/or fix their builds or stat changes. There are two ways to implement the lock-in period: a timer that is reset every time a stat change is made, or a timer that is specific to each stat change made. With either implementation, builds will eventually be locked-in (because people need to sleep).

4. Written description of what happened, the whole story. Also what happened before and after. I was attempting to pull the crank of the ballista on the canyon map with a platform and two ballistas when Shisha_Smoker (who was standing in-between and near the front of the two ballistas) kicked me, interrupting my action. After Ctrl+M'ing Shisha_Smoker, I reattempted to pull the crank of the ballista when Shisha_Smoker shot me in the head, which is the second Ctrl+M report. I do not know what the first teamwound report was.
5. Why you think the offender did what he did.: Unsure.

3. Time and server, as accurately as possible: Around 8:15PM CST; NA_3
4. Written description of what happened, the whole story. Also what happened before and after. : I was idling in NA_3. To my knowledge B3H3M0THB0MB3R was the only other person in the server. I left my computer for a few minutes and returned to find that I had been kicked from NA_3, but thought nothing of it and went into NA_1. B3H3M0THB0MB3R later entered teamspeak and apologized for poll banning me from NA_3. After realizing I was poll banned from NA_3 for an hour, I sought advice from an admin, who recommended that I put up a ban request.
5. Why you think the offender did what he did.: I cannot possibly imagine what was going on in the mind of B3H3M0THB0MB3R.

8. Other Notes: There may be supportive evidence in the chat log of NA_1, but I did not take any screenshots.

Edit: I cannot accurately recall whether I was on my main, Rhaelys_BlockLeft_of_Chaos or my alt, xXScrubslayer_GoddessXx. It makes more sense if I was on my alt, not my main when I was poll banned from NA_3 considering B3H3M0THB0MB3R was unaware that the character was an alt and apparently would not have poll banned me had he known I was Rhaelys_BlockLeft_of_Chaos (from my memory of NA_1 chat logs). I have changed 1) to reflect this, apologies for the confusion.

I was headshot with a crossbow by Bootie in the first minute of the map. I was confused, though, because there were no enemies in sight. I was alerted to my killer's location by a teammate who was in spectator mode.

I was testing the swing range of my cudgel while running toward the enemy near the start of the round when Fury ran into my swing from behind. Before I had a chance to apologize, Fury proceeded to hit me four times, killing me as seen in this screenshot.

Can anybody provide the secondary mode stats for a Poleaxe? +3 values would be very helpful, although unloomed also works. I'm not too fond of the idea of shelling out 14k gold just to check stats :/

As the title suggests, I am suggesting a secondary mode for polearms that are usable with a shield. For example, take the Spear. It can be used with a shield in which it has only one attack direction: a thrust with extended reach, known as a hoplite thrust. If the shield is put away or broken, the Spear has four attack directions, but the thrust attack now has a different attack animation, most notably being shorter than the hoplite thrust. If the Spear had the ability to be switched to a secondary mode, it could then access the hoplite thrust without having a shield in the other hand.

For balance purposes, I would suggest that this secondary mode for all shield-usable polearms without a shield equipped
1) only allow the hoplite thrust attack direction
2) not have the ability to block (since blocking with that animation was done with a shield)


Thus, it would provide no advantage in most combat situations (as switching to access a different attack animation would leave you exposed and unable to block).

There are only a few advantages this secondary mode would offer: increased ability to participate in line battles without a shield (as hoplites normally do) and an increased reach to hit horses without a shield (as hoplites normally do). I could also envision an infantry switching to the secondary mode to gain enough reach on the thrust animation to catch an enemy who is attempting to run away.

Comments and criticisms are welcome.

Looking through the forums I saw a thread suggesting that shields list how many slots they can take, which reminded me about an issue I noticed with the website: it does not say which weapons can be used with a shield.

Well, that's not really a problem, right? 1-handers can be used with shields, 2-handers cannot be used with shields, and polearms cannot be used with shields.

Except for the Goedendag, Bastard Sword, Heavy Bastard Sword, and Longsword, which are usable with a shield.

And about half of the polearms, which can be used with a shield. I was going to take the time to list all of them, but then I remembered that I don't actually know which polearms can or cannot be used with a shield. There isn't an easy-to-apply rule, such as length of weapon because the Ashwood Pike (166 reach) can be used with a shield but the Awlpike (165 reach) cannot. The Voulge (124 reach) cannot be used with a shield, but the Military Scythe (155 reach), a side-swingable weapon like the Voulge can be used with a shield.

In short, if someone who has been playing this mod for two and a half years can't remember which weapons can and cannot be used with a shield, then how can we expect new players to, the ones who will need that information the most and won't necessarily have a clan member or friend to ask?

tl;dr add shield co-usability information to weapons on the website
