As your first step in cRPG you will probably go for a sword with a shield,
but this in long term will NOT help you.

I recommend you to go in custom battle (single player) in a 1 on 1 and
learn how to manual block with a npc. After this step you will you be
a way better player in all fighting style !

Later on, duel servers will also become handy.

I'd recommend reading the Moschers cRPG Guide. Has some nice tips for a starting player, especially for those frustrating first levels.

I'd also recommend you to plan your main build with Vargas's Character builder once you've tried and found what you like.

Keep in mind that out of all your items gold cost combined 5% is the repair cost. So go easy on the expensive stuff at first.

For each level of Power Throw or Power Draw you should have 14 WPF in the corresponding skill. Otherwise you'll get "You do not have enough throwing/archery WPF"  message and your accuracy is reduced lots. Keep in mind the WPF is calculated AFTER your weight has reduced it. Head armor weight counts 3x and hands 2x IIRC.

Other than that all I can say is have fun. See you on the field

hey,  i am jesus christ,  son of chadz so listen to me:  take whatever build you have (I guess shielder is cool for starters) and get out there, have fun and get a hint of the game dynamics.  try things out and dont start training or character planing to much at the beginning,  u will probably end up retiring anyway when you found out what u want.
in battles hang around with guys that have a clantag and try out ome teamwork with them, its more fun,  u will survive longer and learn a thing or two.

now sth my grandfather told me:  when near death,  you will pitty over every woman u coulda fucked and havent.  so dont dont fuck,  but do fuck. Amen.

Yes, I know from whence I came! Discontented as a flame, Upon myself I live and glow. All I grasp like lightning flashes, All I leave behind is ashes
Flame I am - that much I know!

Archery is the most difficult and unrewarding class in crpg. That some of us insist on playing it doesn't mean we're noobs. Maybe masoquists.

if you dont have a main character yet, use the "skip the fun" feature on the character website, and just keep trying different class till you find the one you like

You can do this if you're uncertain of what you want to be. If you already know what kind of type you want to be then I suggest you look on another threads that tells how you should choose your stats and so on.
I'm not saying you should follow them all the way. But only so you know the basics of what you should get and what you should not get.

For overall tips & help can you find the link posted by Joelturuz.

My only major tip is that.
Don't buy too expensive gear early on.
While in the beginning phases do you want to still gain plenty of gold so you can buy all your gear you need.
So don't buy something really expensive early since that will slow your income down.
You should rather make a full set of basic gear. i.e full leather a weapon worth 2-5k, and so on.
Then you just play with it. And this gear should be enough to be decent. Later when you have more gold so can you switch to mail if that's what you wish.
