Heavy Cav has needed a nerf for a while. On NA at least, the 5 riding armored horses are very common.

The main problem with heavy cav is that they're nearly unkillable as melee, catas for instance can get stopped in the middle of a clump of melee and ride off multiple times (this is also thanks to the ridiculous forcefield on the elite cav shield).

In my opinion the heavy horses should be mostly immune to ranged, arbs or throwing lances should still take them down but your standard archer scrub with a hornbow shouldn't be able to do much to them - but if they get stopped in melee they should die. I think this is the ideal balance because it gives people a good reason to ride them (avoid being dehorsed by ranged), but you still need to be careful to do well.

Currently though it takes me, a melee with 8 ps and a danish probably 10+ hits to kill a cata, and if the rider is looking to the side and holding up an elite cav shield even overheads from directly behind get blocked.

I think most players will agree with this, the main problem is how to implement it. The horses still need to be tough enough to give them the desired archer immunity, but also need to be killable by melee players. badplayer i think suggested a multiplier, maybe horse HP could be increased and armor decreased (since cut is much more prevalent among melee players, pierce more common among ranged)

I wouldn't even really call this a nerf, the toughness vs melee has been out of control for a long time and even heavy cav players agree.

As the title says, I think that a no shield tag should be added to the Bamboo Spear and Ashwood Pike. Why?

The huscarl + ashwood/bamboo combo makes for a support character who can "poke" as effectively as someone with a longspear, but can survive a 1v1 or 1v2 nearly indefinitely. There are numerous "offensive" shields that can be used, plate covered and plate shields are also annoying, but the huscarl is the most annoying because it gives a ton of coverage making it hard to actually land any hits, in addition to its toughness. Lengthwise, an ashwood pike used with a shield has 227 length with the 1h stab bonus (+61 according to shik), and a bamboo spear has 261, compared to the longspear's 264 with 2h polearm stab bonus (+19 last i heard).

In addition to this, the ashwood and bamboo spear do not have the "unbalanced" trait, are cheaper (ashwood is 1k less, bamboo 2k less), are faster (ashwood 93, bamboo 90, long spear 81), and in the case of the ashwood, higher damaging (31p, longspear 26p). All this adds up to poor internal balance of support polearms.

Compare a Bamboo Spear + Huscarl to a Longspear. In trade for an autoblock (shield), 9 speed, and no unbalanced malus, you lose 1 damage and 3 length. If you were going to go pure support and didn't want to use a pike (terrible in every aspect except for length, and given that the bamboo spear isn't all that much shorter I don't see much of a reason to use a pike as pure support) there is basically no reason to use a long spear over a BS/SH combo.

The Ashwood Pike is similarly better than a longspear, except you lose 37 length and gain 12 speed and 6 damage. In addition to this it allows you to hold your own in a 1v1 situation due to the speed and the odd "activation" timing of polearm stabbing. It's also nearly the same as the awlpike which also recently had a "no shield" tag added.

Lastly, the latest balance patch was clearly intended to reduce the ability of support to function once in close combat - Nerfs to speed, unbalanced tags, no overhand on the longspear, removed awlpike+shield, 3 slots - and the ashwood/bamboo+shield combo still falls into the category of "support that is hard to kill up close".

I think the bamboo spear is still plenty viable if it were made no-shield because of its speed, cheapness and good length, however if ashwood pike were made no-shield I think it would need buffing to remain useful, maybe add sideswings to make it a longer, cheaper alternative to a warspear.

I'm not a fan of the system in the first place and I think it's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, but whatever. Personally, I don't really care about reporting someone who hits me once in a melee and I also don't care if someone reports me for hitting them. If someone's teamwounding me enough times that I'd be able to use the report system to kick them, they're probably being obvious enough for an admin to kick them anyway.

Anyway, I'm already tired of being spammed with two lines of big pink SO AND SO HAS TEAMWOUNDED YOU IF YOU THINK THIS WAS INTENTIONAL PRESS M TO REPORT THEM NOW and SO AND SO HAS REPORTED SO AND SO FOR TEAMWOUNDING INTENTIONALLY (1/5) every five seconds, it's nearly as bad as being QMLd. I'd really like an option to disable the text entirely.

when the archer changes happened i realized immediately that they were the worst, but i didn't realize how they'd change the archer metagame. i haven't played in a little while (skyrim, SR, space station) but i'm going to assume little has changed since there hasn't been a balance patch since i last played.  here is a short list of why arrow type determining damage type is dumb

a) it happened without much internal rebalance of the bows meaning there is little to no reason to use anything other than a horn bow. before, there was some reason to use other bows - longbow if you wanted to kill tin-cans, rus bows if you wanted to kill peasants, horn if you wanted to kill peasants/annoy tincans/play more of a support role. now, the horn bow is so much better than the others there isn't much of a reason to use anything but it. some still use loomed longbows and some use rus but overwhelmingly, it's hornbow.

b) it fucked up melee. prepatch you couldn't really get into the main melee area without getting run off or killed. because the longbow was so slow you had to stay away from the fight or you'd be ineffective because you ended up spending 95% of your time drawing, getting interrupted, redrawing, repeat. the hornbow is so fast you can stand in nearly melee range and fire into the enemy line. in melee i find myslef worrying more about archers than the guy a foot away swinging an axe at me.

your typical archer sees melee players complaining about archers and assume they're getting shot standing around or something, if an experienced melee player gets shot they're either fighting another melee or trying to get to archers after winning a melee fight.

c) it made all arrows but bodkins worthless. ideally you'd have a few viable arrow choices, instead you have one. anyone not using bodkins is either new, dumb, or poor. the response to this is "it's balanced around strat" but strat itself is so fucked up it's going to be months before anyone has enough armor to warrant pierce damage of any kind. to be honest i see little point in balancing the main mod around strat until strat is more developed. balancing around what strat is now, "A", when the finished product is going to be "B" does not make sense.

d) most importantly - archery is not fun to play against. this is a game based around sweaty men killing each other with pointy pieces of metal. the archery system is straight out of the 90's, the last game i played with a cone of fire system for anything was planetside and that system sucked in 2003. archers can kite forever and can kill you incredibly quickly from far away and you can't do anything to respond. archers want their class to be able to take on melee players 1v1 and the devs have obliged, but that is retarded. it's like their class balance completely ignores their most important trait of "from far away". you get to hurt me without me being able to hurt you back that means everything else about you is shittier. that's how that shit would work normally. instead, archers are more dangerous and influential than melee players. melee is the weakest class type in a game about melee combat.

most of the fun in strat is battling and helping your clan take territory, now even the larger clans struggle to get enough troops and gold together to attack even a village. at this rate it will be months and months before anyone goes after a castle or an actual war happens. your stated goal for this iteration of strat was to make it more interesting to be a regular player and you did the exact opposite, before at least i had battles to fight and places to move into, now i just sit in a fief grinding out well-bred sheep. i haven't even moved from the fief i'm in since i got here i think 3 weeks ago now

the teams weren't even, 8 on 5 is decided in like 95% of cases. he and that guy might have been friends, on TS etc

god knows goons teamkill each other intentionally all the time, and people do it all the time after a round has been decided

banning someone for one (possibly 2) TK's is retarded, particularly because screenshots come with whatever context the guy posting them decides they should have. banning on screenshots where all that's happened is a TK is retarded

there's purposeful TKs all the time and 99% of the time they're no issue because it's just someone getting even or the guys have some kind of rapport etc

if you're going to ban based on screenshots you need to ban based only on screenshots because i can spec you for a whileand come up with a screen of you TKing a guy with no issue, everyone teamkills sometimes, but i can just say "he was arguing with him in chat before" and apparently you'll ban based on that

The devs nonstop buff cavalry, cavalry, and throwers, the game is quickly approaching unplayable as 2h infantry. Shielder is boring as hell and I already did two gens as shielder, I can't even play 2h anymore because for every infantry there is a thrower, two archers and a heavy cav. Just get rid of melee infantry and be done with it

edit: when playing other games online i say to myself "are these admins worse at adminning than the CRPG balance team is at balancing?" if the answer is yes, i find another server
