cRPG Technical problems / Cannot connect to server error 404
« on: December 02, 2012, 01:01:53 am »
I downloaded the Clan banner pack and accidentally overwritten the script with the clan banner pack script. It broke so I used the Crpg launcher to repair it. That's when I got the 404 error, and now it constantly gives me this error. I tried deleting crpg, redownloading CRPG launcher using dropbox and official beta version. Nothing works. Any reason why this error is happening?

General Discussion / I'm retiring from CRPG
« on: December 06, 2011, 03:15:41 pm »
Farewell fellow players, crpg has become stale for me. For some odd reason, i no longer enjoy playing CRPG like i did when i first started back in january. A myriad of different reasons led to this decision but ultimately, CRPG has lost that freshness that it once had and now i find that crpg has become far too serious and repetitive. Melee combat is only engrossing in the duel server now, or during a full battle/siege server without all the troll archer alts that seem to plague low pop servers.

Anyways the important part of this topic is that i have 3 masterwork looms, +3 GLA, +3 Cuir Bouili, and a +3 red wispy gauntlet. Post in this thread and tell me why i should give you one of my looms. Bonus points for newbies and people i like.

Alright so this Gen i respecced into a hoplite and i have to say, shield with awlpike is the ugliest and silliest thing ever. There is no incentive for any hoplite to choose any spear thats not an awlpike. Not only does it have the highest damage, it also has the longest reach of all 1 handed spears. Sure it's slower by 3 speed than it's counterpart the warspear, and it only has 2 directions of attack, but why would a hoplite need anything but a thrust to do damage? Furthermore, the ability to turn into your swings nullifies any speed bonus you may have, since the length of the awlpike means you can make a crescent of death that outreaches the warspear's crescent of death. Combined with the no shield rapid fire stabpolestun and you have the most versitile weapon, high damaging weapon a hoplite could use.

Also, from a realism perspective, no one uses an awlpike with a shield. I have yet to hear of any sources discussing awlpikes being used with one hand and a shield, and the rondel guard suggests that it was mainly used as a 2h weapon.I know realism isn't an argument, but chadz and Co. wants Crpg to reflect the combat of the middle ages, and in the middle ages (renaissance technically) the awlpike was used in 2 hands to pierce plate, not in one hand like a hoplite.

Either remove the awlpike's ability to be used with a shield, or make the ashwood pike usable with shield. The ashwood has an equal range compared to the Awlpike, which means that you can actually go toe to toe with an awlpike user without being at a severe disadvantage. Perferably, i'd like to see the awlpike removed as a hoplite weaon, but i know how many people will whine so it seems more practical to ask for an alternative to it.

Suggestions Corner / Add "reserves" for strat battles.
« on: September 12, 2011, 10:07:06 am »
As it is, Strat is pretty much a 60 on 60 battle. You pick your roster haphazardly and hope that your opponent doesnt engage in some cheese tactic that counters your mainly 2h/pole/shield army. Once you picked out who will be in the battle, you either spend a good 1-2 hours straight fighting a grinding war that is mentally exausting and stuck with the same roster of people. This sucks ass if you're attacking a fief, and find out that your army of cavalry and footmen get picked off by rooftop camping archers and pikes. The worst part about this is that there is nothing you can do except retreat in this situation.

What would be better is have the regular strat battle, 60 vs 60, but each team have a pool of reserve players (30?) that can switch in for other players. This way if a situation requires more shieldres/range/whatever, a commander can switch players and have the necessary classes needed for the new tactical situation. This would be great for the new players, because those who are not "experienced" have a chance to participate, especially if they have a needed skill that lends them to be useful. These "reserves" could be chilling on a separate server dueling to practice/warm up while waiting to be called into action.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / i haven't one shot anyone in forever.
« on: September 10, 2011, 12:16:06 am »
I realized how bored i am with this game when on seige today, EVERYONE was wearing plate and only the very new players were in cloth. Sorry but i've been playing since december and i still can't wear my Medium armor for long without losing money, how are people running around in transistionals without losing all their cash?

For the lulz, after trolling around with a pike on horse and getting banned, thought it would be edifying for the CRPG community to see that Pike on horseback was just as OP in RL as it is in CRPG

The Kontos:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kontos_(weapon)
Quote
As shown by contemporary artwork, the kontos was about 4 metres long, though longer examples may have existed; later Parthian and Sassanian clibinarii (Middle Persian: Grivpanvar) reportedly used kontoi of longer lengths; only highly trained cavalrymen such as those fielded by the Arsaco-Sassanian dynasties could have used such weapons. Its length was probably the origin of its name, as the word kontos could also mean "oar" or "barge-pole" in Greek. Thus, it had to be wielded with two hands while directing the horse using the knees; this made it a specialist weapon that required a lot of training and good horsemanship to use. In addition, most Parthian cavalry (even possibly including cataphracts) carried bows, so this meant daily practice with the weapons.

and the heavy cav that uses them

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataphract#Appearance_and_equipment

Quote
Cataphract lances (known in Greek as a Kontos ("oar") or in Latin as a Contus) appeared much like the Hellenistic armies's sarissae used by the famed Greek Phalanxes as an anti-cavalry weapon. They were roughly four meters in length, with a capped point made of iron, bronze or even animal bone and usually wielded with both hands. Most had a chain attached to the horse's neck, and at the end by a fastening attached to the horse's hind leg, which supported the use of the lance by transferring the full momentum of a horse's gallop to the thrust of the charge. One reason for this was the lack of stirrups (especially amongst Western armies); although the traditional Roman saddle had four horns with which to secure the rider,[26] nevertheless these were largely inadequate for keeping a soldier seated upon the full impact of a charge action. During the Sassanid era, the Persian military developed an innovative solution to overcome the lack of stirrups and effectively "fasten" the rider to the horse's body. Persian horseman had a cantle at the back of the saddle and two guard clamps which curved across the top of the rider's thighs and fastened to the saddle, thereby enabling the rider to stay properly seated, especially during violent contact in battle[27] There are also reliefs in Iran from Firuzabad showing Persian kings doing battle in a fashion not dissimilar to later depictions of jousts and mounted combat from the Medieval era.

can you imagine having to deal with a horse archer armed in medium armor riding a catapract with a fucking pike as a side arm? that would solve the pike problem alright

Closed Requests / Banned for using Pike on horseback
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:36:21 pm »
Banned by Rangerbob for 3 days. I was bored and wanted to see if pike on horseback was workable, sorry for causing rage, But it wasn't like i was changing the tide of battle on my sumpter horse. People started getting angry after i actually tried to get kills with it.

anyways, ban was justified, but can you reduce the time of ban? 3 days is a bit excessive :/

Suggestions Corner / Reduce strat gold gain, increase troop spawn
« on: July 25, 2011, 12:40:55 am »
The ability to buy plate and elephants is too easy imo, in a couple of weeks, pretty much every major clan will have an incredible stockpile of gear, it should not be so easy to equip an army with the best weapon and armor avaliable.

It should be reserved for the crack troops/ heavy cav, not for everyone

Guides / ROLES ON THE BATTLEFIELD (INFANTRY EDITION)
« on: June 29, 2011, 09:05:31 pm »
Just so people know what their build is best for/what they should do if they want to do a certain playstyle.

Any input is appreciated. If you have any questions simply ask, any criticisms please make it constructive.

STR Builds

MELEE DPS:
2h, High damage polearms. You are the killer, you travel with the mob and should try to kill as many and as fast as you can. Support your fellow soldiers by attacking enemies that are tunnel visioning a friend. Playstyle: Rarely will you see this class backpeddle, instead they focus on catching an opponent when he isn’t looking and manual blocking instead of dodging. Melee DPS are the workhorse of the infantry and the number and quality of this group tends to decide the battle. This class can also be the CARRY if and only if the player is very good at manual blocking.

Optimal weapons: GLA, GLB, Bec, Danish/German GS, Flamberg Poleaxes, claymore etc etc. Any weapon can be used as long as you have enough ps

Builds: 24-15, 27-12, 30-9, or any str heavy build. Max PS, IF optional, max ath and wm, 1 point in shield for old board shield is optional

Hard Counters: Plate killers (str archers), throwers

Soft Counters: other range, cavalry

Strong against: everything that can’t run away.

Tank:

1H shielder:  You are a 2h’s best friend. Your job is to soak the arrows and bolts during maneuvering and to take as much hits as you can. You deal moderate damage so it is very unlikely you can one hit anyone, but your ability to “hit stun” and your autoblock means that as enemies engage you, your team can flank the enemy.

Playstyle: Distract the enemy and soak damage so plate killers and Melee DPS can destroy the opposing army

Optimal weapons:  For battle: Italian sword, Long Espanova, axes. For siege: Iberian mace, warhammer, axes. Shields are preferential but the best shields against range spam is the Heavy Board shield at shield skill 4 and huscarl at shield skill 5

Hard counters: cavalry, crushthrough

Soft counters: Axemen

Strong against: Range, 2h

Builds: 21-15, 24-15, 24-12. Max points in shield and ps. IF should be the last thing you put in

Plate Killers

Longbowmen, throwers: Your job is to eliminate Carries and heavily armored commanders/knights. Stick around the mass of Infantry and shoot at those who are the biggest threat.

Playstyle: not sure, never played one. However, I’d imagine that you stick near the melee and pick your shots, assist your teammates by stunning an enemy that is overwhelming your teammate. Shoot at charging cav, and watch out for enemy archers

Optimal weapons: Longbow, warbow, jarids, Javelins, throwing axes, a 0 slot weapon for blocking

Hard Counter: Agi bowmen, shielders

Soft counters: crossbowmen, light cav

Strong against: 2h/polearms, heavy cav

Builds: Never played one but I’d imagine it would be 24-15, 27-12 or something similar. With max in power draw and ath and wpm.

Support:

Pikemen, halberds, crushthrough weapons: This class is pretty much a DPS class but with less DPS for more tactical variety. Pikemen kills cavalry and hitstuns enemies while crushthroughs are great for assaults on castles and vs shielders.

Playstyle: Stick with the main group. Pikemen should be at the flanks and rear to guard against cav, while crushthroughs should break the shield walls that block a chokepoint in a siege or battle. Once battle has been fully engage support should act like DPS and rake up as many kills as possible.

Optimal weapons: long spear, bill, Halberd, pretty much any long weapon/crushthrough

Hard counters: Range

Soft counters: 2h for both, shielder for pikemen, and pikemen for crushthrough weapons ( because of the numbers and length.)

Strong against: cavalry, inferior numbers for pikemen, shielders for crushthrough.

Builds: Minimum of 21 str, but 24-15, 27-12 seems like an optimal build for both of these

AGI Builds:

Soloist:

You are intelligent, you pick your battles and try to isolate individuals to a duel that you win most of the time. However you will be overwhelmed by any team that has some semblance of teamwork

Playstyle: Go off and find stragglers, noobs, and unaware range to gank. Get enemy infantry to follow you so you can fight them one on one. Some are also Agi backpeddling spammers thus proving that you don’t need skill to solo.

Optimal weapon: Fast 2h weapon or a long polearm like glaive, LGB, GLB.

Hard counter: range, cavalry

Soft counter: teamwork

Strong against: situational, wholly dependent on skill level of the two fighters.

Build: 21-18, 18-21, 15-24 max ps, wm, and ath

Arrow Spam

Strongbowman, crossbow. You are the scourge of battle. Your spam causes ceaseless rage by the 2h and polearms, not because you damage them, but the fact that you stun them during melee is what causes the rage. Not only that, you’re the first line of defense against enemy archers and spammers, so remember how important you are while your teammates rage at you for Team hitting them.

Playstyle: aim for the plate Killers, crossbowmen, and enemy archers. Once that threat has been eliminated, help your melee buddies by stunning the enemy with your arrows.

Optimal weapon: Light crossbow, strongbow 0 slot weapon for blocking

Hard counter: Agi Shielders

Soft counter: cavalry and str shielders

Strong against: Enemy range and lightly armored enemies

Build: not sure, but 21-18, 18-21 seems to be good builds to me.

Agi Shielders :

Shielders: You are the best friend of the Arrow spammers. You are a mobile fortress which crossbowmen and archers can hide behind against counter archer fire. You are also the sworn enemy of enemy arrow spammers and you should do everything in your power to kill them

Playstyle: Stick with the arrow spammers on your team and protect them against enemy range or meleeists. If you feel like you have an advantage in numbers or skill compared to the enemy agi shielders, you should attempt a charge against the enemy arrow spammers

Optimal weapons: Pick, Iberian mace, Warhammer.

Hard counters: Crushthrough, cavalry

Soft Counters: Axemen

Strong against: range, 2h

Builds: 15-21, 18-18 or 18-21.
