Title: What Kind of Maps Have You Liked the Best?
Post by: Jarold on October 18, 2017, 01:08:02 am
Hello, I was trying to think of more maps to make but frankly I'm out of ideas. So, I decided to hopefully get some good ideas from you guys. What has your favorite map style been? You can post about a specific map or just a general summary of a map you enjoy. I'm really hoping to get some good feedback about maps that have proven to be balanced and fun for all to play. You can even post about maps that were just plain fun for everyone but wasn't exactly balanced! Don't forget you can also post about maps you dislike as well.

Do you enjoy field maps which usually favor cavalry and ranged, but can be fun for infantry?
(click to show/hide)

Do you favor village maps that have a good mix of balance depending on where you are in the map and how the map has been laid out?
(click to show/hide)

Do you favor maps with ruins that you can run into that usually favors most classes, with infantry being left out a bit, but mostly balanced.
(click to show/hide)

Do you favor city maps that limit cavalry player's experience but can really favor infantry and even ranged depending on the map?
(click to show/hide)

Maybe you enjoy a mix of these, something completely different, or out of the box?
(click to show/hide)

I do understand that there is a lot of overlap between map types, but try to choose the ones that most appeal to you.

I prefer any kind of map as long as it's not completely flat and open like f.e. some desert maps

village maps often give a good mix for cav, inf and range though

City(castle, siege) and ruin maps are best in my view.
Village maps are nice; since I like full immersion, in certain states of mind I may find myself felling trees and forking cabbages instead of seeking the enemy team and using teamwork with my own.
Protip: Work WITH the terrain not against it and you can go very far indeed; not every detail needs to be smoothed out, sometimes the terrain generator can work wonders.
A mix of styles is best, all the greatest maps use a careful blend of styles. Pre-plan what you will do before you do ANYTHING or at least make use of the terrain colour feature to block out certain areas as being a type of thing or responsible for a certain play-style or feel.

any map which you can ambush people from above like batman is preferable
Literally 'getting the drop' on other players feels and looks fantastic; as the sky-box is criminally underused in most maps, please use this feature more.
My map "2Desert" was an experiment with the available height of maps and is the smallest available setting in the terrain editor.
Just my 2 paragraphs.

my turn:

City maps > ruins > village > river/forest > desert maps > open field maps

and why?

I was just not really playing cav classes in general so getting couched or bump lanced by cavs was annoying and dumb imo. It was too simple and just too unspectacular.
thats literally the only reason for my list. Open field maps against archers and cavs if not playing a hoplit was pretty pointless.

Village maps usually feel like the most favourable to all classes, and the most enjoyable. I used to love city maps, but mostly because cav struggles there.

I liked the one that fips added when as defender 50% of the time you would spawn above the flag on a really high tower with no doors, the only way down was a 50ft drop to your death. Anyone else remember that map?

Village maps are quite nice for all classes.

If we had 2011,  id say open field,  back when 30 vs 30 teamwork was going on,  with commanders on both sides holding shieldwals,  2h and pole guys hiding behind them,  archers exchanging volleys and cav forced to work with team.
<3

chagans map leaning on the movie conan the barbarian is one of my favs tho.

also i like maps with bushes

>cav struggles in narrow city maps

Lol nabs. It's harder for sure, but even more satisfying to destroy pedestrians. The one downside of city maps are the usual bundle of stickss who hide on some 2 story building in a corner of the map pew-pewing, something that is incredibly annoying to more than just cav. Early flag spawns mostly fixed that problem.

I've always liked the maps with unique features. Things like the trap door, giant chasm with bridge, arena, Tavern, cave of odin, volcano Valley, silent sea (ship battle).

They may not make the best maps for cav or archers but they break up the monotony of villages and fields nicely.

I would support adding more of these maps where players fight in unique situations. I would also like to see more fights that take place inside of castles. Fights in courtyards or along a section of wall. In general I think smaller maps are better as well.

Ruins, locations where archers can take cover and avoid being free kills to cavalry( who am i kidding, just take a scottish sword and outrange every cavalryman lmao), while having open areas which can infantry move through while being partially covered (yes playing infantry has to be risky af tbh) and a lot of cavalry ganking potential. Most ruins map we had have those attributes and they grow old only after many years of gameplay.

I like maps that have a large central building with multiple vertical levels and a mix of indoor/outdoor space. Tight rooms/stairwells inside that favor coordinated team fighting. Ladders or ramps outside with rooftop areas. The tropical island map is a great example of this done with class balance. There is still room for cavalry to contribute outside, and the building is too wide/has too many paths for one or two archers to camp the top and be cheap.

A complicated building gives players a lot more to fight around/think about than a flat map with a cluster of peasant houses that might as well be opaque blank cubes strategy-wise.

Seems that village maps are held in high regard due to their balanced nature, but they can become the same after awhile. Seems to me people want more complex maps, oh boy!

make a CRPG lane push map, that will increase the probability of one side winning if one of the lanes collapses, like a MOBA.

I always considered small corridors to favor teamwork less, as it becomes less about target switching and more about being able to hold your own ground. Maybe its more strategical, but less about teamwork. I do enjoy buildings a lot when playing as a team of 2, because large groups in tight spaces always ruin eachother.

arena

I never like arena at all. Minimal cover from ranged, and little from cav. Its like its made to fuck infantry.

my take is that simple maps are best actually,  however mixed diversely in a good rotation.

but the best maps are usually quite simple - with exceptions ofc.

One of the default warband mp maps, I believe simply called "Village," is my favorite map. Maybe it should be considered a city map for the purpose of this poll? It's got multiple alleys, 4 entrances, plenty of ladders and buildings to fight on or in. The crpg version has been tweaked a bit though. Someone that cries about archers clearly got to it.

I believe more complex buildings and a higher density of obstacles and hiding spots, lookouts, underground ways etc gives a nice little touch of randomness to a battle, which is (was) a great thing for new players. Unlike on open field maps, hiding at a corner or at a tower door with a great maul gives a kill chance to every player, not matter which skill level they have.

New players were gutted like pigs on every field map.
paragraph.

Yea, spamming the admins to change map to arena is just an NA meme I think

Gotta agree with James; it's fun to play those "unique" maps, even if some are a bit unbalanced. Need more small maps to suit low pop battles. Also anything that helps deter the delaying/kiting cancer

It happens on EU as well. Id rather play tavern than arena, or nord town.

On a similar note, ive been loving mount&siege native, its very goofy and gimmicky. All kinds of crazy shit going on, though i usually just stick to the old fashioned gameplay, its entertaining to watch other people fly the hot air baloons and drop bombs on people etc. But the thing ive noticed is that people keep fucking voting for Minas Tirith, probably because they are dorks of the movie, but the map itself is absolute garbage. Very frustrating, even if it rarely goes through. Literally just ranged defence vs melee push, one lane and long boring path to the top. One lane maps are horrible in m&b, a map is usually good depending on how many paths there are, and how viable they actually are.

Well, I'm looking through the current maps in cRPG and there are quite a few unique ones that aren't currently in the rotation. I think I can tweak them to make them more likely to be added to the rotation. Also I just made a new map, its a modified native village map, "Village Towers". Let me know what you think.

Not sure if anybody mentioned it yet, but one of my all time favorite maps was the snowy village with the xp barn. I always loved playing on it as any class. It was good for cav, had high hills for archers, open space in the middle for confrontation and the greatest barn ever.

I don't know if this is possible but I would love to be able to have battles in the NA 1 server that happen in the courtyard of or fields in front of recognizable strategus fiefs. Fights in the streets of Dhirim, on the top of the fortress of Narra, on the dunes in front of Durquba, or in the courtyard of Yruma castle for example.

Would be cool and nostalgic to battle in these locations where we have had a lot of awesome strategus battles in the past.
