They probably figured no one would willingly purchase it, and decided to give it for free, probably with fuck ton of ad-ware like the money grubbing jews they are would.

Did a quick check, couldn't find the "get windows 10 app" so i didn't bother reserving, nor do I think I will since you can still get it for free once it's released anyways. No need to reserve it really. Idk, I might reserve it on my shitty laptop just for kicks, but I like windows 7 and see no reason to upgrade immediately anyways, especially after windows 8.

Wanted to avoid confusion with Windows 95 and 98, especially with searches where it may cause some issues

This is actually an amazing story that involves idiotic application programmers using prefix matching "Windows 9" to detect Windows 95 and 98 back in the Millenium era, thinking they were being clever.

Due to Microsoft's almost-constitutional adherence to retro-compatibility, they skipped a number instead of telling those silly apps to fuck off.

heard this was the last OS, or at least the last one that will have a cost is it true?

as if they'll update it and that's it

I have never once had a good experience with windows updates/upgrades, so screw this.

If you guinea pigs don't have your computers all explode the day its released I MIGHT consider upgrading.

[...]especially after windows 8.
What's that supposed to mean? Windows 8 is a solid, good working version.

Think park of the reasoning to go from 8 -10 is to distance themselves a bit from 8 and acknowledge that it was an unpopular OS. Windows 10 will probably be a good upgrade, even if its just windows 8 with windows 7 start menu. Windows 8 is actually a decent OS, its just confusing and awkward to navigate, especially for people who don't know much about computers. Load times are faster, it will have Directx 12, better memory management etc

Yeah, been using 8.1 for almost a year now on my home PC and for a few months at work. It definitely was confusing and frustrating at first, but, after learning a few useful keyboard shortcuts (most importantly win+s to search, akin to the search bar in start menu), i feel entirely comfortable with it.

Don't really miss the start menu thaaaaat much anymore, actually i'm more excited about what they've done with the command console and other things.

I have 8.1 on my laptop and still prefer 7. 8.1 just trained me to never press the start button and instead have shortcuts on the taskbar or desktop without really offering much of benefit, although it loads up fast

With 3rd party software, yes. I really don't feel compelled to, at this point. Learning keyboard shortcuts has enabled me to actually do what i need to do faster.

I already used the shortcuts under Win98...

Win+E
Win+R
Win+D

...those already worked back then. Not sure about Win+S tbh.

Well yeah, it worked as intended, sure. I just don't particularly care for the overly "minimalist design" or the fact that it looks like something that a tablet should be running, not a desktop. And sure, I realize that it is made to run on both, but the large icons and lack of text just doesn't look right to me. To each their own, I would say, but it seems as though I am not alone in preferring 7 over 8... the numbers speak for themselves. I wouldn't trash talk anyone who actually likes 8 simply because their opinion is different than mine, but I personally see 8 as more of a step back rather than a step forwards for Windows on PCs... kinda like Vista was compared to XP.

Large icons? For tablets? Are you aware that you can use Win8 in exactly the same way as Win7, completely ignoring all the Metro interface stuff and the full screen apps?

Yes.

You can't really remove metro from 8.1 without modding it. And installing a mod that messes around with the core elements of windows is something i'm never going to do. You can right click start and get some similar options as 7 (but not all) but a left click still puts you in metro mode. Some items are associated with metro programs regardless and I can't find simple stuff like the calculator without messing or having a shortcut. Maybe I can tweak and fine tune but its just not worth the bother to me

Using windows 10 here, and so far so good. It feels like a re-branded and modified windows 8 though. I'd say that if you already have a legal win8, you should probably stick to it for now, and see what happens.

How-to calculator: Win+S, type "cal", hit enter.

No 3rd party stuff installed, haven't intentionally used anything Metro or W8 App for months.

Clicking "start", then calculator is still easier.

If you've got it pinned to the start menu, sure. If you use it that much, why not pin it to the taskbar?

In 7 frequently used items are 2 clicks automatically. I have it pinned to the taskbar in win 8, but I don't want to have to for common programs. Especially on a laptop with limited space. I could make shortcuts on the desktop but its a bother again
