Title: Recovery & editing of serial/cd-key guide
Post by: Babelfish on March 06, 2011, 12:54:34 pm
Since some people found it useful, i thought i could upload it here, making it easier to find :p

Threw together a guide on how to recover and change/edit your serial-key, hopefully it helps :)

To view your cd-key there are several options, but to view the one your actually using you have to enter 'regedit' (look under 'Editing your serial-key' to see how) . Jump directly to the 'Editing your serial-key' if you are sure you got your hands on the correct cd-key.

Recovery
The first and easiest step to view the serial-key you bought, is to go to their main webpage -> view games -> view serial-key. However to do this, your forum-account most be connected to your key.

(click to show/hide)

Most likely you will not find your key on the webpage, as few people go through the trouble of adding it. But fear not, if you have bought it directly from TW, they have sent you a mail, which you can find easily by typing in the company name (two options: Avagate or eSellerate) in the search field:

Email (hotmail):
(click to show/hide)

If you got it through steam, you can find your key by doing this;
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

If all of the above fails or you find this option easier, you can follow TW's serial recovery;
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

Editing your serial-key

Step 1: press the windows button or start
Step 2: In the search/run field type "Regedit"
Step 3: Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER and double click it
Step 4: Double click software
Step 5: Double click Mountandbladekeys
Step 6: Double click serial_key & add the key connected with your character

(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)
(click to show/hide)

Good luck =D

mhm

Characters are bound to cd-keys. So if you have been playing on his account, and you are getting your own cd-key, you will lose your original character. Your friend will keep your character on his account/cd-key.

The solution to your problem, would either be to switch serial-key with your friend (if he is not playing or do not mind), or beg chadz to switch over your character to your new cd-key.

Great guide, very helpful.

Thank you Babelfish
Thank you  :D

Even if chadz is a good guy, its a long-shot, but try logging on webirc (http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=mount%26blade-crpg) or regular irc if you have that. Tell chadz about your situation and if possible get your friend to confirm.

Quaknet @ #mount&blade-crpg

Hope that helps =)

This is what the guide actually does. Shows the relation between cd-keys and characters as well as the fact that characters are stored in the database, not on your own computer.

Thx for this guide.

when i bought cd-key, they gave me 2 different keys. 22 and 16 letters. So after reinstalling the game i used the second one(22 letters is for older versions i guess). And didn't even know that the game thinks they are different. So after changing key, using this guide, cRPG works fine again.

is the serial key for this game 4x4 or 5x5?

i bought it over steam when steam had fucked up the serial key system, so i don't know if my serial key is right :D

Can i change cd-key, that bound to my character? Steam override cd-key in registry at game starting up.

PLAYING cRPG WITH MORE THAN ONE SERIAL KEY

Postby Fallen_Smiling_Daemon ยป 30 Mar 2011, 02:45
This is how I managed to play 3 separate accounts.

First I have the game for steam and steam doesn't like it when you do this, it only accepts the last serial you use so here's the work around. Without Steam.

1. Download the game from Tales World and install.
2. When it ask you to put in a serial, put in one of the serial keys you have.
2a. If you don't know what your serial is and its on steam, right click on it and choose "View game CD key"
2b. If its not on steam then you should know what your serial is.
3. So now you have a the game up and running with 1 of your serial.
4. Go to run, then type "regedit"
5. Find where M&B stores its serial, which is at HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> MountAndBladeWarbandKeys , left click on it
6. You will then see a bunch of strings and their values, one of which is the important "serial_key"
7. Now Right-Click in where those strings are and select New -> String Value
8. Lets name it "serial_key-PillowPet"
9. Double click on that serial_key-PillowPet, and for the Value data, type in your other serial key
10. That's it, so now if I want to switch serial keys, I will have to go into Regedit and rename "serial_key" to "serial_key-SmilingDaemon. And rename "serial_key-PillowPet" to just plain "serial_key". You do this every time you want to switch serial keys.

The string with the name "serial_key" is the one that you will be using. Strings with other name will just be stored there. If you want your games on Steam, then just add the shortcut for M&B to Steam and it will pretty much be the same. I also had to uninstall my Steam copy of the game to make this work.
