Title: The series thread
Post by: Vexus on October 07, 2015, 10:36:04 pm
Dunno if there is/was a thread for non anime series so why not make one instead of individual threads?

Now that most series (That I watch at least) are restarting, what are you watching?

Me:

The Flash - Well, it certainly started with some action.... I don't want to spoil anything but, eh.... It honestly started bland.
Agents of S.h.i.e.l.d - Watched first episode, and it's starting good so far.
Big Bang Theory - Okayish but since I watched it all I'm going to keep on going.
Fear The Walking Dead - It's pace is very very very very slow but we shall see.
Walking Dead - Next week.
Grimm - On the 30th so still far.
Vampire Diaries(Gay I know)/The Originals(Much better than Vampire Diaries) - On Friday.

And that's it, until other series I watch restart.

The early Mentalist seasons were much better than the late ones.

I used to love watching that.

The main character was always amusing.

Vampire Diaries(Gay I know)

Seen this on TV couple of times, ain't bad as I expected it to be. Seen worse shit. Not that I would ever d/l it and watch on my PC.

I'm anti TV-show fggt but recently I got hooked into it so here it goes:

Forever (canceled) - S01 was just lovely. Nice characters and general atmosphere. Procedural but nicely done. Wish they continue it somehow.
Dark Matter - it is utter crap, production values are super low, ship rendering is better done in Derek Smart games. But I've watched S01 and kinda want to continue. Main premise is incredibly cheap but I can swallow it. Very watchable even though you feel bad day after.
Firefly (10th annual re-watch) - best sci-fi show ever, nothing else comes close imho
The Strain - this crap is a lot like Dark Matter. Production is piss poor but story is somewhat interesting so I'm still keeping with it. Funnily enough this is best vampire themed show atm, even though it is trashy.
Fear the Walking Dead - seen S01, satisfied in the end. However, I would prefer they do not continue it. Wished same would happen to Walking Dead but they made at least five more seasons which makes no fucking sense. Whole point of zombie genre is to show despair of survivors, not to see them building militia and some sort of resistance. No way to win that fight. Also slowest paced show if I've ever seen one.
Narcos - seen pilot so far, very good show. Quality. But I'm not into it for some reason. Sick of drug dealers and their world.
Mr Robot - pure bundle of sticksry this is. Starts strong, devolves into utter crap. Makes no sense no matter how you see it. Strong performance by some actors and thats it. Main story arc is rubbish.
Hannibal - this TV show is very special, it's not for everyone. S02 has the best finale in any show I've seen so far and in general is one motherfucker of quality season. Actor performances are very strong, but sometimes they tend to go too far which makes it kinda funny at times. Too much talking in riddles and smarty pants chat. Very brutal show, not everybody have stomach for it. Original movies pale in comparison and even Dexter feels like child cartoon when compared to it.
True Detective - S01 is epic, but I liked S02. It is different. And its quality, production wise. Better than rubbish that is going on other TV stations. Wish they named it differently, then it would avoid comparison with S01.

Honestly this site search is utter crap  Regardless cheers for the link.

I am watching vampire diaries/the originals because I like the mythical shit vampires/werewolves etc... True Blood was miles better but it ended... So, well, I have only this to see now  :(

Mr Robot
Game Of Thrones
and I think that's it among current running, great shows.

I miss Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead (first seasons), Rome, Blue Mountain State and other good shows in the past.

This spring.

Yeah I know. Been a supporter since the kickstarted started off.

But still. It's a movie. Would've rather wanted a new season but this will have to do. Plus i heard they're going totally 18+ with this movie. Nudity and that stuff included.

Ainsi Soient Ils

Following a group of seminarians, their teachers and the administration of the Church of France. Scenario has weaknesses by forcing everything to be super eventful but the whole thing is passionating. It's not people being dicks to one another House of Cards-style, it's about the schism between what they say and preach and what they actually do and the general shittiness of life in an aging, corrupted Church while actually sounding true. There are versions in other languages, but I'm not sure there is an English version.

Still undecided if i should hunt this down on BBC America now and stay 2 weeks ahead, or wait till it airs on BBC2... I suspect a lot of my mates and people i work with will catch it on TV when it airs on BBC2, so it's always fun to catch it at the same time. But i also cant stand waiting when i know it's already been shown! Gah! Why does BBC america get it first!?!?

i watched it on bbc2 and it was ok, to be expected of a first episode :P they changed a couple of things but again to be expected.  Not sure im happy with how the saxons fight but it will get better <3

Grimm started last weekend too if anyone watches it. It has a connection with the fable universe (Aka popular monsters etc) since the series Fables might never be done :/

It's pretty good if you like slow burn scifi drama. It's got a very Twin Peaks vibe.

I usually give a series 1-3 episodes chance to judge if it's worth the time. Agents of shield didn't grab me at first because I don't like watching detective/crime style series. The more it went on going, the more it turned into "fantasy" if that is the right word.

I'm quite picky on what to watch as with work, gaming and youtube you won't have time to do everything.

Depends what you are looking for of course.

I think it's set around the same time as Daredevil which is post-Avengers. There are mentions of the destruction in New York and stuff during Daredevil S01 so it would make sense.

I've never fully seen Evil Dead movies before, watched few clips and original movie on fast forward but thats all. TV show (Ash vs Evil Dead) is enjoyable and can appreciate over the top style they are going for. Not to mention Bruce Campbell who has a character of true comedian. Good show, will watch it till the end. But won't make me watch those old movies.

Which one? Sherlock? House of Cards? Must admit I have yet to see any of them. Heard they are both excellent but not a big fan of Cumberbatch and House of Cards is focused on president of USA secret affairs and I find that incredibly boring. Just like I can't watch Suits, show many of people I know simply adore. Corporate 'murrica makes me puke.

The Expanse is so damn slow, bores me to death most of the time. Haven't read a book yet. Watching anime most of the time these days, they know exactly how to pace a show and keep me fully interested .

Looking forward to watch that new documentary everybody is talking about, Making a Murderer. It's on Netflix and finally we got that shit, no need for VPN anymore.

Well Flash started this week.

And Big Bang Theory and Teen Wolf.

Sherlock Christmas episode was a giant mind fuck! Some hated it, some loved it. I was confused but liked it in the end.

Also hell yea! Penny Dreadful. Been waiting forever for them to make a date on the next season.

Better Call Saul Season 2 started and it's pretty cool as first episode.

11.22.63 started and it's a surprise that  finally a tv series could be enjoying as the book.

Finished Narcos Season 1 and had a blast like Breaking Bad watching it.

Just started rewatching the Wire after I watched it about 7 years ago. Man there is really nothing like it. I mean I understand that some don't get what's so fucking great about it, but I just love it and nothing get's even close. The amount of detail and realism is insane, combined with great characters and a fascinating plot. And it is really great to watch a second time, there is so much going on in each episode you only fully comprehend after you know what will come.

And in general for example Breaking Bad had better fictional drama and action for sure, Sopranos had great characters too, but none gave you even close understanding of the whole mechanics and systems, how dealing drugs actually works, how they do police work (:P), how politics work heck the whole city. And even if I hope it is mostly not that bad around here you can learn a lot about how fucked up bureaucracy, politics, education and economics are at times in our western free world.

I really hope the Deuce will be great. Never watched Treme, the topic just sounds so boring to me and I have no connection to jazz or New Orleans at all. But fuck me, I just found out about this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2492296/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_2. Oscar Isaac is a genius, will check that out.

For liking flash better than gotham? I don't care about Gordon's life nor most (Not all) of the villains in the gotham universe since they are nothing special but criminals. I also don't like batman but that is probably something that others share too. If I wanted to watch a detective show, gotham wouldn't be the one in my mind.

That doesn't mean they don't have flaws, mind you. I hate that flash and arrow share villains sometimes because you miss some plot when you watch one and not the other. Same for Legends of Tomorrow, I could never stand arrow and his constant memories of that stupid island so I don't know much about the blondie and atom. All I know is atom is like antman and the blondie was resurrected and now has bloodlust to kill. Will not stop me from watching the show tough.

I'm honestly more annoyed by Captain Cold and his flame buddy Heatwave than her. She's more observant than talkative throughout these 7 episodes so far, so I don't see her as annoying for the time being.

The creators seemed to have noticed about my statement since on the last episode:

It's an interesting pattern. Series that have more that 12 episodes per season seem to be generally "crappy" when compared to the 10 eps or less ones.

It's a phenomenom that also happens in anime p.e.

Shows like Arrow, Flash, Gottham etc, are lackluster in many aspects. And the horrible acting doesn't help.

Can't wait for The Expanse season 2. What a pleasant surprise.

Even if it's not as good as it should, they already won our hearts with this first season.

We were in dire need of a special sci-fi show (Dark Matter was quite good too in a different way) and they delivered.
Title: Re: The series thread
Post by: Leshma on March 08, 2016, 01:07:48 pm
Come on, half of the episodes are bore fest. For a good reason tho (they are following the book page by page). Next season should blow this one away, depending how much money they put into production. If CGI is up to the task, this will be one hell of sci-fi show.

Another great Penny Dreadful episode, loving every characters storyline so far unlike GoT.
That scene in Dr. Jeckyls lab reminded me of those Saturday afternoon monster movies that played when I was a kid.
And I couldn't help but chuckle @ the Dorian Grey and Brona Croft hostelesque/torture club scene, totally did not expect what happened there lol.
Kind of disappointed Gary Oldman isn't Dracula, but this one will do I think.

Nobody seems to be talking about Person of Interest. I am now halfway the first season and I must say that I really like it. The two main characters are great. There are a few things that collide with my preference for sensible realism, but it is made up for by the clever mix of an episodic set-up with continous hints toward a serialized storyline.

PoI is cringe fest
Why?
Title: Re: The series thread
Post by: Leshma on May 27, 2016, 01:00:06 am
You already partly answered that yourself. It is far fetched plot about super special agents who run private business and are able to do things on their own all American secret services aren't capable together. Caveziel's character is built like typical 80s action hero, except he's boring as hell. The other guy tries to be witty impersonating already mentioned James Spader. I'll rather watch La Femme Nikita from 90s, makes more sense.

Actually I know show that takes itself even more seriously than PoI which makes even more of a cringe fest. No it's not X-Files Season X... we don't talk about that anymore, ever again... it's Empire, gangsta show about music industry.

Maybe I'm too harsh, certain anime set the quality bar too high but shows like PoI make me laugh in a bad way. I'm more into light hearted shows with interesting plot and cool characters like Forever or Castle. Forever was such great thing to watch, always made me happy. Until assholes from Fox canceled it. Like going through that episode with Firefly wasn't bad enough already.

Edit: Took me awhile to remember of whom John Reese remind me the most. It's Steven Seagal, from Nico movies.

AMC sux. :P the season premier for that was 2 weeks ago so they are making people wait 3 weeks for the 2nd episode.

Preachers quite solid. A lot has to do with the fact I have a really soft spot for Dominic Cooper. Nohomo I want to touch those gorgeous hair of his. Kinda suprise that after Breaking bad and beating that dead horse that is Walking dead and whatever that other Walking dead thing is, AMC managed to pull out another, sofar decent, series out of its sleeve.

Preacher is good too. Dominic Cooper and that girl with the Chevelle play the king and queen in the Warcraft movie but their acting is way better in this, maybe it's the writing.

Those idiots insisted in airing the show at the same time of Game of Thrones. Bloody suicidal.

That rushed ending rendered most story-lines and characters completely pointless. Really angry at the producers to end it like this.
Loved the journey though. A poetic masterpiece.

Preacher has it's own peculiar pace, seems pretty solid so far, all that redneck mayhem and randomness. Gotta love Cass.

We have soon Dark Matter, Mr. Robot and Marco Polo second seasons.

Really recommend Black Sails for anyone who hasn't watched it. It's absolutely brilliant.

I don't think GoT killed it though. The series creator is saying this is how he planned it- "Series creator John Logan tells EW that his plan to wrap up the gothic drama has been in the works since “midway through the second season,” meaning that its final chapter played out exactly as he wanted it to"
Maybe they will do some spin offs.

Edit- Bravo Ms Piper Bravo!

Yes, Eva Green was finding it very tough to act as Vanessa Ives and when the series creator talked with her about the ending she agreed.

That however doesn't mean the end episode was good.

Since all series I watch have been on halt for a while (All but one restart in October), I checked it out.

It's not bad at all! (I watched all episodes one after the other aka 8 episodes) I'll keep in touch with it for the next season whenever it may be.

Yea.... I'll have to agree on iron fist.

It wasn't that great but personally, luke cage was worse (Unless you like a series about a guy fucking anything it moves). What made me hate iron fist the most tough, was the annoying freelance nurse that has to be in every damn marvel series. Always has to say her thing about no killing and shit when everyone around her is getting attacked by ninjas/assassins.

Not sure if any of you watched True Blood, it's an old vampire series that was gory unlike the rest. It also had a bunch of other supernatural creatures like fairies, shapeshifters etc

Anyway, that show ended a couple years ago, and now a new series in the same universe started. It's called Midnight, Texas. There's 2 episodes so far, and it doesn't seem bad.

I have been watching it, still finding Loras Tyrell as annoying as he was in Iron Fist. Fight scenes seem to get more boring as it proceeds. Sigourney Weaver's age is showing alot. Tired of "The Hand" too.
Personally would have rather had a DD season 3 with a different enemy and The Punisher.

Started watching "The Orville" by Seth McFarlane, who also seem to always write himself in as the MC. Not that i mind, his comedy is very hit and miss to me, but ive definitely had more laughs from family guy than most other shows ever. So far its actually pretty good, people say its a bit like old star trek but with some comedy bits. DONT WATCH THE TRAILER THOUGH, it really shows the worst of the series.

Also rotten tomatoe critics give it 20%, while audience gives it 89%, interesting stuff.

It has far less action pew pew, which people seem to want in all series now (i heard Star trek discovery, or STD for short lul, was that). Of course because Seth made it, thats all replaced with sometimes shitty sometimes good humour. But there are some philosophy aspects which TOS seemed to be all about. And by ep 3 im surprised with the direction they chose, its shaping up to be unpredictable at the very least.

I think I am having second thoughts about this new Punisher, not the actor DD S2 was awesome. Its the story, which they seem to be screwing up. The Punisher was on a life long vendetta against the mob/criminals because it was the mob who killed his family not the government/military. And I thought they already established the irish mob killed his family in Dare Devil Season 2, so are they now going to try to say the irish mob was working with the cia?

One of my favorite books, and authors. Was disappointed when the original plans for AC movie was cancelled, but it literally couldn't have worked out better -- Netflix gave Altered Carbon maxed out budget.

Black Man is probably Morgan's best work.

Tell me about it. Altered Carbon is one of my favorite books (and trilogy) ever. I was hyped for the show like no tomorrow.

And then they butchered the plot and a lot of the background shit. And added retarded shit like Lizzie turning into a superninja because she spent a week in virtual (why doesn't everyone do that?) or Ortega getting a super arm (why doesn't everyone wealthy run around with those enhancements?) or motherfucking Reileen Kawahara with the most retarded motivations ever. Ortega with her cringeworthy "strong female character" thing, executed so badly and she just came across as a 5'0 40kg female trying too hard. Constantly angry and screaming, she'd be a laughing stock in the real world. Zero charisma or presence.

God damn it.

Still. It's a good show, relative to what else is out there. It did a lot of things right. But it had so much potential.
Title: Re: The series thread
Post by: Vibe on February 06, 2018, 11:04:13 pm
Yeah, feels like they made pretty much all the female characters super cringey.

Ortega - loud stereotypical latina. Good god was she hard to watch.
Rei - whoever came up with her agenda should never work in any sort of entertainment business again. That shit made zero sense.
Quell - some hippie forest dweller where you meditate and then you're this badass Envoy. Dumb.
Lizzie - lets train for 1 day and then put on some sado maso clothes and go full ninja.

The Envoy hippy commune thing was so gay. They never explained how they gained superpowers by sitting in a random forest. Or how they had access to all that technology. Or what the fuck an average off-world mission looks like for anti-immortality commandos. Their skillset also made no sense for what they were. And wtf was up with Kovacs' wallhack that he had briefly for two episodes and was malfunctioning the rest of the time?

Like with many other things, the show took a premise from the books, then changed aspects of it and the premise no longer made any sense. Like Reileen loved and missed her brother so fucking much that she.... waited 250 years before bringing him to Earth? Wut? And she got him involved in an investigation that put him in an adversary role to her? And then continues to do everything in her power to antagonize him instead of, say, just walking up to him and going "omg i luv u hey there."

And they had to add katanas, of course. Best weapon 300 years in the future, a katana.

Seriously none of the changes they made from the books made sense. If they'd done a faithful adaptation, GoT or The Expanse style, it could've been the best show on TV.

Not like they could've just asked for it, Carnage wasn't exactly friendly with them. And you can't just store a sleeve anywhere of course, and it's doubtful the proper facilities for storing one are readily available. Plus Kovacs was on parole, which was almost certainly tied to Ryker's sleeve. Bancroft's line of credit was also tied to Ryker's DNA.

The fact that a clone of Takeshi's happened to be there coincidentally 250 years later, of course, made no fucking sense. And it wasn't even the sleeve he wore as an Envoy, so it made no sense someone would go to the trouble to acquire it from another planet 250 years later.

Been watching La Casa De Papel on Netflix recently, actually quite good, I don't even speak Spanish. It sucks ass. I haven't read the short stories they were based on, but people say the series changed a lot and not for the better. couple episodes were good i think, but the rest is mediocre to awful.

In general the concept of Altered Carbon is the most interesting thing ive heard or seen in general. But it was beyond cheesy. Honestly Lizzie was the worst and most illogical part of the entire season.

But she didnt really kill it. What really started the cheese was the first 10min of the first episode. I dont really understand what combat school do these "elite of the elite special forces" guys go to but its below the level of kindergarden. Nobody besides main characters take any cover, everyone clears rooms like they know 200% its totally safe when it obviously isnt, guys hold down sights for like 10 seconds on heads of the mains and still shoot entire clips to the ground. And the cheese on that asian believer guy....

I kinda liked the series thou. But they really need to tone the cringe down. I have faith that they will thou. Its kinda like Black Sails. The first season was full of clean clothed pirates with teeth so white they blinded the cameras. They heard the cries of the fanbase and fixed it in the next seasons.

This show gathered so much hate from the locals, I expected shit show but I'm pleasantly surprised. Haven't watched GoT since S03 but Nemanjici have more and better battles in just four episodes than GoT for first three seasons. I actually forgot when was the last time I saw a movie or TV show with semi decent depiction of medieval battles that don't involve CGI.

This show gathered so much hate from the locals, I expected shit show but I'm pleasantly surprised. Haven't watched GoT since S03 but Nemanjici have more and better battles in just four episodes than GoT for first three seasons. I actually forgot when was the last time I saw a movie or TV show with semi decent depiction of medieval battles that don't involve CGI.

aw man, that looks sick! anywhere that a fellow could get an english-subbed version of that?

I'll try to search for english sub but finding episodes online might pose a bigger problem because this country of mine is especially strict when it comes pirating their own entertainment shows, it is kinda hard to find that online.

@Gnjus Do you have screenshot of the my old friendcher who did that, just a moment before?

I forgot all about this series, never did end up getting around to watching it. Is it worth it if I thought the books were just "okay?"

Well neil patrick harris portrays the villain of the series. It resembles the old movie which had jim carrey, but now as a series. If you didn't enjoy that, I don't know wether you'll enjoy this as it's fairly similar.

Take it however you like it, I like the actor.

I'm sure many old folks remember the original karate kid, well on may a series is going to air on youtube red.

Its called cobra kai and will star ralph macchio and william zabka the original actors. I'll see if there will be other means than using youtube red to watch it as my country is not supported and youtube red sucks balls.

The Expanse season 3 has been really fucking good and we can thank Jeff Bezos and capitalism that they picked up the series now when SyFy dropped it.

Anyone seen the new "episode" of Black Mirror? Very interesting.

A shame you need netflix to properly interact with the choices.

clicked through bandersnatch. I don't get it, command & conquer cut scenes were more entertaining than this.

Yea what a snooze fest. Watched it with this girl I just started seeing, nearly caused a first argument...I kept deliberately choosing all the bad choices just to try to make the thing slightly interesting.

Watching a Canadian show called "Bad Blood" about the Rizzuto Montreal Mafia family. Pretty low budget but entertaining all things considered. I had never really heard much about the history growing up. Pretty bloody story.

Dark, Deutsche show. Good shit. Like Stranger Things but for adults.

Americans may want to wait for imminent remake made specifically for their market. One thing is certain, it will be worse in every possible way but hey, beats having to listen Germans speaking German language.

I just watched first season, was waiting for a conclusion before I start again.

The show is exceptional at the beginning but already at the end of the first season, I stopped caring.

Still better than most of the shows I have seen.
