Title: Notch to sell Mojang to Microsoft
Post by: Kafein on September 11, 2014, 05:39:43 pm

If it's true the hypocrisy is through the roof.

I would sell my morality for much less than 2 bilion dollars. And Notch probably wants to do some other project, Minecraft is pretty much established

What's so bad about this?

Other than that he kind of ripped off every early investor whose purchase decision was influenced by Notch's vague promise of a "some sort of open source" version. But we all knew that was never going to happen by now anyhow.

He obviously realized he was a one hit wonder and good for him for realizing it in time and getting his money's worth. Though I feel bad for his employees who actually wanted to do creative things in his company, I understand sobbing could be heard in Mojang Sweden office when the news broke.

Soon you can only access Minecraft via Games for Windows Live

Would do the same, the big time of Minecraft is already over anyways

Sold!

- Minecraft was sold for 2.5$ Billion
- Minecraft made about 100$ Million in 2013 from the game and merchandise
- Microsoft wants to break even in less than a year (July 2015)
- you can do the math yourself (hint: they expect a 25000% increase in profit. in one year. ya right)

This is gonna be a wild ride - I, for one, will be watching this very closely.

Minecraft has been out longer than 2013, it was released in late 2011...so you're missing a whole year of earnings in 2012.

But I agree with you, highly doubt they'll get their money back and would have been much cooler to see them fund indie games under some new banner.
I guess this is just Microsofts way of buying into the market at a loss to try and get marketshare and rep/street cred.

I at least like direction new CEO is taking Microsoft.

Did you also see that Notch is leaving the company?

Typewriters have been around since 1900, but I wouldn't buy a typewriter factory based on their profit made in that time

Let's state the obvious:

Guess Microsoft is planning total platform lockdown and changing financial model of the game. Turning it into B2P with microtransactions, raising the price of the game, subscription to be able to host custom servers, renting Microsoft servers. Minecraft related merchandise, TV shows, card games blah blah blah. They'll try everything and fail royally at it. Typical Microsoft that is funding bunch of bullshit projects led by retarded dwarfs (Joe Belfiore comes to mind) from the money earned by actually gifted entrepreneurs like current CEO Nadella.

Notch did a wise thing but that doesn't mean he's not an asshole as I stated numerous times in the past. If he could shut his mouth all these years and don't pretend he's some kind of gaming hero and savior, no one would blame him for this. Still, he's a smart guy who realized that his game is thing of a past and there is hundreds of clones, many open source and that advanced concepts are coming through and will be released as games in near future.

I was following this as soon as I heard the news, and I was actually a bit upset to hear it was true. Now, Bungie was purchased by Microsoft in days of yore, and it seemed the development of the Halo games was largely untouched after the initial development of the game (from a Mac RTS to a Xbox FPS). So long as Mojang developers like Dinnerbone and Jeb remain, the game should be fine, but as soon as they leave if ever, the game could get pretty ugly.

I'm mostly upset because this was the first game where I felt my voice actually mattered. Maybe it was because I was growing up (purchased this in Fall 2010 during high school), or maybe it was because the interaction between the consumers and Notch, Jeb, and Co. on Twitter actually influenced future, content-adding updates. Seeing it grow from this little Java game to being merchandised in my local Target was mind-blowing enough. My biggest fear is the loss of community-to-developer relationship. Notch was just another gamer like everyone else here, he just could make games too.

Seriously Microsoft, what are you thinking? you could have funded 8300 desperate indies with 300k each and gotten some huge hits out of it...

I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.

If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.

In other words he's scared of responsibility/work and saw $$ signs so sold out. Now he can happily laze around for the rest of his life doing fuck all.

Fair play to him  :)
