If you want to get into Dwarf Fortress (unless you are already into it, just not playing it atm) with as little pain as possible (read: only average agony), follow the steps of Johammeth's playthrough, and the Dwarf Fortress Wiki guide, ALSO get the Starter Pack and use either Ironhand or Phoebus texture packs.

After you feel you're advanced enough, try Dwarf Therapist, great tool for faster dwarf labours management. And remember, losing is !FUN! :D

I've played it to a point, didnt lose though, quit before anything really happened. Had a mine with cage traps so no monsters could breach me. But i havent played since the update (i believe there was one) that was sort of recently adding things happening in the world not just the square you are at.
