General Off Topic / Good Summer
« on: May 25, 2012, 01:46:30 pm »
Summer has come to Scandinavia and I'll be taking a Summer break from gaming to enjoy the sun and to go to raves, I wish you all a good one.

Remember to enjoy life and especially your youth while it lasts, especially those of you in the teens, there's a certain joy you can only get from breaking loose with good friends in the company of good women. And there's no better time for this than Summertime.

General Off Topic / Favourite game music
« on: March 12, 2012, 04:24:11 am »
Post here your favourite game music, music that triggers good memories and/or just sounds good.

A few personal choices, mostly from the 8- and 16-bit age.

From the PC Ultima 8 and the Fallout games have had the music that has made the greatest impression on me I think, Ultima for its magical and eerie 8-bit classical score and Fallout 1 and 2 for atmospheric industrial, tribal drums, barking dogs and sirens as the bombs fall:

Ultima 8 - Pagan's Theme
Ultima 8 Music - Carthax Lake
Ultima 8 - Cemetery

Fallout 1 - Brotherhood of Steel
Fallout 2 - Vault City
Fallout 2 - Arroyo
Fallout 2 - Car

Some great music in the Elder Scrolls series too, for example Daggerfall: Over Snow

And some old NES and SNES games, classic Japanese madness/brilliance in midi sound form:

Megaman x - Storm Eagle Music Theme
Chrono Trigger - Frog's Theme (check out the epic in-game cut scene here)
Duck Tales - The Moon
Ninja Gaiden - Intro (give this 20 seconds to open up)
Legend of Zelda: A link to The Past - Overworld

De fleste her kender det muligvis, men ellers tag et kig, udmærket online tegneserie med afsæt i Skandinaviske stereotyper iblandet lidt fælleshistorie:

General Off Topic / The Tolkien Ensemble
« on: February 25, 2012, 04:21:08 pm »
If you like me thoroughly enjoy Tolkien's books you may approve of this music, as befits something as monumental (to my best knowledge) the highest quality music made for any fantasy work. This is for the books what Howard Shore's music was for the movies.

From Wikipedia:
Quote
The Tolkien Ensemble (founded in 1995) is a Danish ensemble which aims to create "the world's first complete musical interpretation of the poems and songs from The Lord of the Rings". They published four CDs from 1997 to 2005, in which all the poems and songs of The Lord of the Rings are set to music. The project was approved by both the Tolkien family and HarperCollins Publishers. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark gave permission to use her illustrations in the CD layout.
Permanent members are Caspar Reiff and Peter Hall (composition, singing and guitar), Signe Asmussen (singing), Öyvind Ougaard (accordion), Katja Nielsen (double-bass), and Morten Ryelund Sørensen (conductor and violin).
The Ensemble has toured Europe in 2007, combining their own works with soundtrack pieces from Howard Shore's soundtrack to the film trilogy as well as live narration by Christopher Lee.

The style is Scandinavian folk music combined with classic and opera elements (including many performances in Qenya and Sindarin), and the mood and composition changes parallel with the books. Here's some samples (you can find most of it on Youtube):

Gandalf's Song of Lorien

The Road Goes Ever On

Galadriel's Song of Eldamar, I Sang of Leaves

The Old Walking Song

Lament for Boromir

Song Of Nimrodel

Christopher Lee sings Treebeard´s Song

Song of Beren and Luthien

Galadriels song of Eldamar, Ai! Laurië Lantar

Suggestions Corner / Drowning script
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:57:58 pm »
Please implement a drowning script, underwater fighting and last man hiding is pretty silly.

A few seconds with head submerged before HP start decreasing like in Vikingr would be nice, if you're feeling lazy I know someone to borrow it from.

Thank you for your time.

General Off Topic / Julian Assange to host talk show on RT
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:14:17 am »
The major international news network 'RT' is drawing up serious political, and perhaps philosophical, lines in response to the big US networks by giving the World's probably greatest freedom fighter (certainly greatest journalist) his own interview show on the channel.

Julian Assange to launch show on RT this March (RT America)

Assange TV on RT: Exclusive interview show coming soon (RT)

Historical Discussion / A People's History (the 20th Century)
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:38:43 pm »
As I can gather from the off-topic forums that a few here are interested in modern history too (I take it for given that all here like the Middle-Ages  :)) here's a link to Howard Zinn's 'A People's History (the 20th Century)' on Youtube, read aloud by Matt Damon and the author himself. Good for example for travelling or for other situations where you're unable to read but still intellectually available.

20th century US history from the perspective of marginalized groups.

I've collected the 53 parts into a playlist here.
