General Discussion / There goes another one
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:20:37 am »
http://forum.meleegaming.com/suggestions-corner/cheating-textures/

I've been one of the few new voices around here, as far as I can tell, and one of the most active/vocal at that. Been playing a lot, participating in and out of game, and I think people have noticed. Made a few good connections - even got tapped to become an admin-in-training. However, the above thread, and the idiotic attitude of the Dev within, and lead me to believe that I am not valued here whatsoever. I'm just another punk gamer - there are hundreds of me - fuck me and what I think, there will always be more asses in computer chairs. And hey, that's fine. But I'll take my business elsewhere.

I'm not going to rage out and say "CRPG BLOWS" or anything. It doesn't. It's the best multiplayer mod I've ever seen. But literally half of the fun for me is making things for myself and others - enriching the community- it's sort of what makes Warband and all of its iterations special. The Devs know that - it's why they started modding, too. But that very spirit is apparently soon to be regarded as cheating around here, so I'm out.

So continues the reign of the old-timey "I hate this mod but I'm never leaving" players. Driven out is the new blood that actually enjoys time spent here.

Probably good for me in the long run. For all I know these are some of the last months of my life, and I really don't need to spend them grinding my lvl 17 character up to the point where I can begin to contend.

Bye CRPG! It's been mostly alright!

PS - giving all of my gold and looms to the Ravens of Valhalla. May they burn all of your cities to the ground.

Scene Editing / the Duel Server map
« on: March 16, 2013, 04:02:11 pm »
If this map was ever to be switched off of Ruins... who would make that call?

If someone made a more interesting map for that server, as per the thread I've got going over in suggestions - a sort of "town" map with a tavern and an arena - a place where people could do what they do currently in duel (hang out, run about and kill one another) with a little more visual substance, who would I have to sell it to?

Suggestions Corner / Tavern server/game mode
« on: March 16, 2013, 01:40:27 am »
Good RPGs that once dominated my free time often had "Hangout" spaces. I remember playing Ultima Online and just bumming around the city bank for hours, chatting with people as they came and went, mugging and being mugged, etc. It's a concept that has often been restricted to MMOs and persistent worlds, for logical reasons... but I think, with a little ingenuity, we could gift that community-rallying concept to this, our favorite server-based game.

Here's the idea: A dedicated server with no teams (think duel), where you cannot spawn with weapons, but are otherwise unrestricted and may do as you please (attacking people, etc.). The server hosts a single map: a massive, multi-story tavern/bar, complete with a small brawling pit, a stage, standing tables and private meeting rooms.

This would be CRPG's official semi-RP hangout. A place where people can goof off, brawling, griefing and flooding chat with drunken nonsense at their leisure... and yet, also a place where clans can hold meetings, being able to see one another's characters gathered as they speak in TS, lending atmosphere and a sense of realism to their plotting.

The possibilities/uses are endless. Important STRAT diplomacy sit-downs, boxing gambling nights... you name it. Screenshot forum threads would be fed for a decade.

What do you think?

Strategus Issues / Strat map is all black before changing zoom

As stated above, the map is all black, only becoming visible when I zoom out. Anyone else have this issue?

Beginner's Help and Guides / Regular Bardiche
« on: March 11, 2013, 07:46:48 am »
With light armor, and the new weight increase to arrows, I'm noticing that my new build's 7 athletics makes me faster than the majority of people. This is helping me a lot, because my natural combat style often involves trying to juke in and out of people's weapon reach, IE dodge instead of always blocking.  So, I'm curious about weapons with a little more reach than my beloved Great Axe, hoping that I can use them to get away with snapping off some of those "you missed me" counter-swings with a little less precision.

That's why I'm looking at the Bardiche. The regular one, not the Great Bardiche. 2h, not polearms. Does anyone ever use this thing? Compared to the Great Axe it's almost identical - 3 speed slower, 6 reach longer.

Looking for some guidance here. Is it foolish to trade that much speed for that little length, as a rule? The Great Bardiche is, compared to the Great Axe, -5 speed +10 length... the same speed/length trade ratio, just at a greater scale.

What do you think? Bardiche: worth it? Do you think I would miss my Great Axe's speed, or is the difference so small I wouldn't even notice?

Beginner's Help and Guides / Just retired - quick Q
« on: March 10, 2013, 05:12:17 pm »
I changed my name. Will my old character name update if I join a new server, or do I "make a new character" on the "join/host" screen? Feel like I've read threads about this screwing people over before.

7
Team-

I know I said I'd never do it, but I'm retiring. Got a new berserker build lined up and I finally know (half of) what I'm doing. But going forward, I won't be rolling naked. At least, not fully. I've learned that it just makes you too sexy a target for archers, and then your KD blows, and everyone thinks you suck - and guess what, that means you suck.

So here's the plan: retire, rebuild, make custom armor mesh replacements that turn ordinary stuff into blood-boiling Berserker gear, hulk out for the rest of time and die happy.

Here's where you come in - I need to:
1) Pick a name.
Pretty sure I'll add the title "The Unfettered" to whatever I use.
2) Pick which items my berserker gear (armor and a helmet) will "replace".
Ideally they will be items that are unpopular (meaning I won't run into a lot of people wearing them) but well-suited enough to the Nordic theme that I will still fit in when rolling with Ravens of Valhalla, even if those watching us don't have my Berserker sub-mod installed (which I will release later.) Oh, and lighter/cheaper armor is better, too. I roll fast and loose.

Lend me your wisdom!

-Commodore

PS: Here's those work-in-progress screenies I promised. The dagger and battle-horn are fake (just decorations, not equip-able). I borrowed them from the Vikingr mod (though reworked), so thank you Vikingr, and the fur mantle/ kilt are made out of Narf's Kuyak, so thanks to him too. The rest is either reworked from native stuff, or in the case of the Bear Sark, fully custom. There will be jewelry, scars, and tattoos before the end.

General Discussion / A present for Gmnotutoo
« on: March 03, 2013, 08:43:01 pm »
...if you made the courser a unicorn I'd love you forever...

Reidi was no novice woodsman. Ever since he was a boy, he had possessed a gift for reading the earth; following the signs and signals left ringing in the wake of a creature’s passing. Indeed, given time, he could follow a pack of wolves clear across their range, coming to know each hound by the unique rhythm of its gait alone. But there, in spite of his skill, at the reaches of the season’s turn, his quarry and the land that harbored it, together they were proving a challenge unlike any he had ever faced. Somehow, for all of his gifts, all of the deep winters and breathless summers he had spent hunting and tracking across the merciless wilds, there beneath the shade of a strange woodland’s trees, he felt like a child once again. Unsure; even empty. Somehow new.
Perhaps it was the nature of the land itself that rattled him so? Such a strange place – so musical, so filled with light - it took all of the focus he could muster to simply stay true to his task, there, his mind constantly called off by the teasing melody of fairy flutes elsewhere in the wood, or his eyes wandering after lily petals caught dancing on the breeze. But if Reidi was anything, he was persistent. A hunter at his core, even before he had become a warrior. And lo, though for days he seemed countless strides behind that which he tracked, reading the signs of its passing across the dells and fields, the forests and rolling hills of that enchanted land, in time he knew that he would find it. That he would meet it, face to face. That mythical fauna; something no wise-man or singer of tales had ever before attested in earnest. A creature out of legend. A creature said not to exist.
The signs of its passing, so subtle, so gentle, they could only lend credence to its story. Crouching by its footprints, even to Reidi’s expert eye, it were as if the beast’s very step were the dew of morning, gently kissing the grass and then vanishing, leaving the sod more lush and alive than it had been before it was trod. He couldn’t explain it – the lightness of it. Not a twig was broken. Not a leaf was upturned. Before its coming, it were as if the woodland simply opened up, like a curtain gently drawn aside.
But Reidi would not be so easily swept. And so he did not rest, pressing on for days yet, until, halted in majesty beside a crystal stream, he came upon it at last.

Could it be?

It was. Here before him, the Unicorn, bathing in the purity of gentle daylight, its white mane shimmering like diamonds, its strong breath rumbling in its mighty chest. For a moment, Reidi could only stand stunned before the sight of it; a youth witnessing their first sunrise; a new parent finding proof of goodness, unabashed, in the eyes of their newborn child. And just as quickly as he had found the magnificent creature – just as quickly as he had set his sight upon it, he felt his soul open to it as had the woodlands. They belonged to one another, then, he and the steed. They were one.

With the first glance of its emerald gaze, Reidi felt the Unicorn sense in him the clarity of a genuine heart, not bidden by the pulls and pressures of the world, but bound instead to its own compass; its own simple truth. And so it came to him as a friend, and he climbed upon it, racing off to prance and frolic beneath the warmth of noon-day, two hearts united in the simple joy of living. Nothing had ever felt so simple. So free. But there was something within his heart that the magical steed could not have seen. A vicious ambition, cold and violent. And though he did not carry his axe that day, the foe-splitter he had wrought against more able bodies than even he could count, the spirit of the thing was not far from his anxious grip. For he was true of heart, yes, just as the Unicorn had seen, but his was a truth forged of glory, brutal and honest; a kind of truth the white-horned steed had never before witnessed. A kind of truth it could never understand.

Reidi would guide the animal back to Nara, the hall of his brothers in arms, where he would bind it, shackled in a paddock like an unbroken stallion. There it would wait, miserable and terrified, longing for the clear streams of its native weald, the soft mosses that had once been its bedding, the flowers that had once stood to greet it like old friends. There it would wait, until Reidi found a bidder with an offer worthy of his prize. Or else, he boasted to his brothers, he would simply butcher the ugly sow, the same brutal axe that had slain his foes now severing its spine like any ordinary man’s. To feast upon its flesh, roasted and seasoned, would be a rare pleasure that he would only too gladly share with his brave brothers. They deserved a flavor so rich, he would swear aloud. And aye, its horn? Could there be a more worthy trophy to hang about his neck?

In the end, no matter how, he would profit from his hunt. His capture of a creature of myth, thought dead, or never to have lived at all. The proud heart in his chest, if not the gods themselves, demanded as much.

"Now make your offer!" he screamed from the castle's turrets. "We're getting hungry!"

cRPG Technical problems / Teamspeak crashes Warband
« on: March 02, 2013, 06:16:58 pm »
This is a new problem - happened last night for the first time. Essentially, I can run Warband fine, but if I have TS open then Warband will crash before it can launch. Similarly, if I launch warband first, minimize it and launch TS, Warband will freeze.

Anyone had an issue like this before?

General Discussion / "Performance rating"
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:51:48 am »
My performance rating is 1.

I couldn't give less of a fuck about the number, but tonight I got kicked off of a strat roster that I had been on since yesterday with less than an hour to go before the fight (and believe it or not, I could have done other things with my time if I hadn't been planning on this). Pretty annoying.

Anyway, the official reason for this timely booting was my low performance rating. Can someone explain to me how this number is derived?

I've been in 10 strat battles to date. 3 had no one show up (and thus my K/D was 0:), so really, I've been in 7.

My KDs, if you care about the details:

(click to show/hide)

tl;dr, total ratio is 78:169, and about 30 of those deaths are from bullshit situations that must happen to everyone (running out of gear and having the spawn camped).

Now, that ratio is way, way better than my regular CRPG rating (where I play naked) which is 23/105.

So why is my "performance rating" so low?
I absolutely must be better than many, many other players I see out there. I mean, in half of those fights I did better than most of my team, people get lower K:Ds than me all the time, and to top it all off my "score" (whatever that means in the end) is usually equal to people with far greater K:Ds than me to begin with, thanks to my occasional throwing and penchant for assists.

How do I avoid this situation in the future (having my night wasted with no notice), short of getting a much better rating (which won't happen if I can't get into fights to improve it)?

EDIT: Just want to add that I've found 2 people already, who were in most of those battles, that had worse KD ratios than me and yet have a rating of 4. What am I missing here?

Scene Editing / Axephante's maps! (give a scener noob some feedback)
« on: February 26, 2013, 05:22:52 am »
Hey guys,

Got my first map here. Thought I might turn it over to your curious eyes, to get some general feedback from the pros before I actually "submit it" for rotation. If you would be so kind as to give it a look and give me any pointers, I would be very much obliged. So without further adieu:

Skulldrink Valley:

RP background:
(click to show/hide)

Skulldrink Valley is a forest map. To the south, a road cuts through the woods. To the north, a river runs along the cliff-face where a great fire has destroyed most of the greenery. In the middle of the forest lies a recently abandoned Bandit camp (circled below in red). Teams spawn at the either gate of the valley (marked 1 and 2 on the map).

NOTES:
By design, cav should find the road, the charred forest and the plains surrounding the woods wide open and easily navigable. The forest is certainly spacious enough to ride through, but might require some finesse when it comes to fighting. The bandit village has tree-house platforms that any ranged specialist would appreciate.

Thanks for looking, and let me know what you think. I kept it relatively "tree light" based on what I've seen suggested, and created a lot of the canopy using distorted bushes, but I'm keen to hear how people's framerates react.

Scene Editing / Vital questions!
« on: February 26, 2013, 01:34:29 am »
Hey guys, posted these in the stickied tutorial but they seem to have been overlooked there, so I'm re-posting them in their own thread (my own and one of Teeth's questions, since I need that answer too):

I don't really understand renaming a map anyway. I edited blank_100 and changed str_blank_100 Blank 100 to str_blank_100 Lakeside Abbey, but the scene is still called blank_100 in the scene editor. When I host a game I do find Lakeside Abbey but it is just an empty map. From the guide it is not entirely clear to me how to rename a map, it seems logical to me that I would have the rename the sco file and scenes entry as well as the strings entry, but it does not say how in the guide.

Guess I'll just take screenshots inside the edit mode in the scene editor with ugly transparent water.

And now for my Q's:

I'm making a battle map - the tutorial only tells us how to "test run" siege maps... what about Battle? When I try to run it as if it were a siege map, it comes up blank.

Also, is there a way to set day/night/weather on the map? Can't seem to find that either.

Thanks guys.

Beginner's Help and Guides / Anyone want to teach me 2h?
« on: February 23, 2013, 05:43:46 pm »
Got a loomed Great Axe, a mediocre grip on manual blocking and a serious thirst for violence. If anyone would have in their hearts to hang out with me on the Duel server and show me some moves (footwork, tricks, tips, whatever), I would really appreciate it. I think I've taken myself as far as I can go with 0 instruction... and while raw time and experience will surely build my skill, if anyone can give me a leg up I'll be squarely in their debt. Frankly, I am tired of sucking. Call me a baby for wanting more instant gratification - I'm honestly not used to being picked last, and... me no like how it feels . So that's where you come in, if you're down.

PM me!

Oh, and PS - I believe in helping people, so if and when I cease to suck, I fully intend to pass the favor along to another noob.

General Discussion / Axeplay - are you a fan?
« on: February 18, 2013, 10:52:39 pm »
1h, 2h, pole, throwing - all four have axes. Do you use them? If so, which are your favorites?

I want to hear from archers/xbow/throwers/hybrids/shielders, you name it. I'm curious about axe builds in general - which is the best axe for any particular build?

Go!

EDIT: Here's a list of the weapons I would consider an axe, in case anyone is somehow confused:

General Off Topic / WAR TUNES
« on: February 15, 2013, 06:25:34 pm »
I'm actually an Indie music nerd, but when seeking a berserker state of mind, I find that metal, hard rock, heavy backbeats and a deep melodic rhythm is best. To that end I'm building myself a perfect mix for strat battles. It's still a work in progress - I'm namely looking for a "finisher" song for when victory is eminent. Thought I would share / open it up to comments and suggestions.
Enjoy!

For the roll-call/prep stages just before battle:
Nine Inch Nails: Just like you imagined:

For the opening / beginning of the battle:
Coheed and Cambria: Welcome home (instrumental remix)

For the push:
Dethklok: Go Into The Water:

For the last ten minutes, if you are certainly going to lose:
Mars Volta: Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt:
