Never knew about the importance of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brunanburh, the guy says that in terms of importance its comparable to the battles of 1066, basically England confirmed itself as a unified Kingdom but only in their current boundaries, Æthelstan's dreams about conquering the North were pretty much over, his army was weakened enough by the defeated Northern Alliance.
