Title: native shield on back system
Post by: Arthur_ on January 30, 2014, 06:38:38 pm
Bring back the old native system, where are shield on your back can block arrows, not just lower the dmg...

Doo eet!

Maybe just decrease the Field of Blocking while on back. If not a Tower Shield will make you almost unshotable which will lead to unbalance.

That would balance the ranged overflow.

Actually this change wouldn't make such a combination very powerful at all. Strong versus arrows, weak versus infantry, prey to cavalry.

This was suggested before and someone said it's not compatible with multiplayer afaik. But would be cool for sure :P

In native, shield on back only blocks arrows in Single Player. Dk why..

I believe that's because the armor soak, shield armor and archery damage differences between Native and cRPG cause arrows to systematically glance on a back shield in Native but almost never do so in cRPG.

I can confirm this as I remember quite a few times in native (and mods) that I got the "hit shield on back" yet still took some (low) damage.

In native most people just end up with so high armour that when they get the "arrow hit shield on back" they just take 0 damage.

Singleplayer has the "hit shield on back" message while multiplayer doesn't (for clients). That's probably why people think that the mechanic doesn't exist in multi which is wrong afaik.

either enable this or disable the fact that shield blocks incomming projectiles from the left side (that hits the shield) when you are running without blocking.

also, shield is working when holding an attack (say stab) - it will block incomming projectiles that hits the shield from the front. disable this too if shield on back is disabled.

Don't disable anything. Why would you want to do that?

well having a shield that protects you from the side when not blocking and protecting you from the front when doing stab and protecting you from the front when blocking while its NOT protecting you when carried on the back is silly innit?

(another way of saying: enable shield on back that blocks projectiles  )

sorry im not native english (NO SHIT) im misunderstood quite often (always?  :P )

its a damn shield for crying out loud. its not some alien technology that only works when you carry it in hand.

Haha yes then!

But they already add a body armor for hits coming at the back, and armor is much more useful against projectiles now. Shields also have much better armor values. I believe they should useful now.

I guess it is better for it to be this way, because when carrying a shield in hand an arrow might pierce the shield a bit and got stuck somewhere in the middle. It won't do any harm since there won't be any body parts just behind the shield. When the shield is on back, there is only 2-3 cm space between the body and shield. So it makes sence, in my opinion, for the shield to work as if it is an armor. Because it is technically no different than an armor piece that way, it is very close to the skin. It is like an armor reinforcement part.

i think its a little bit funny that we dont take damage from stuff like this but then again on the other hand pretty sure it would spoil shielder gameplay.

but the xbow shooting through the huscarl is still there and i guess to stay... laser xbows........

im fully aware the laser is used for aiming, this picture in this thread was meant as kind of joke

Have to say not that long ago I threw a throwing lance at some cav, he had a shield on his back and it hit the shield and he took no damage.
Has it changed since?

Yeah I completely support this, there is no reason to not have this. Just who thought this was a good idea?

"So, arrows hit the shield on a players back. Should they just block the arrows as laws of physics decide?"
"Nah just lower the damage"

No it is fucking unacceptable, I want to backpedal into archers and swing them in to face

I'm fine with this. Having a shield in front and back makes you slow as fuck. If someone wants to handicap themselves by having two shields.. go for it.

I believe i remember playing warband beta and shields on the back could even block swings...
