Please take a look at the couching mechanics.

Not only can someone couch someone after running them over at the same time.

The lance during couch mode has ghost reach.  So when you think you have dodged a couch by running to the left of the rider the lance appears on the right side of the rider.  Visually the lance would not be able to hit you in the game.  But some how it does.

Maybe I will make a youtube video about it. 

It is ridiculous.

For the 10,000th time, it's not just the lance...this is the same reason why hilt slash works, or why you can hit someone with the wooden handle on a polearm and still do max damage if you have momentum.  Same reason you can hit someone with a pike when they are 1 foot away.

It is enough to hit someone with the shaft. Same with all thrusts. Makes some sense (although not pierce damage) for 2h swords, no sense for polearms.

If you are going to allow ghost animations while couching then why not just make it so the polearm actually goes through the horses body when it is being aimed at me.  That way I know it will hit me and not trick me visually.

Or you can fix it...

I dunno, have not been able to have much success with chambering couches lately. The old Lance of Compensation was totally fn borked that way.
