Even if chadz is a good guy, its a long-shot, but try logging on webirc or regular irc if you have that. Tell chadz about your situation and if possible get your friend to confirm.

when i bought cd-key, they gave me 2 different keys. 22 and 16 letters. So after reinstalling the game i used the second one(22 letters is for older versions i guess). And didn't even know that the game thinks they are different. So after changing key, using this guide, cRPG works fine again.
