Beginner's Help and Guides / Re: Archer build
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:26:44 am »
I don't really understand the fixation on having a higher powerdraw than required.  My damage with a strongbow and only 5 powerdraw is sufficient for the current state of archery in this game, and to get up to 7 or 8 powerdraw would require far more sacrifices in WPF than I'd be willing to give.

The fixation is a difference of roles. High Accuracy makes you an extremely deadly long range sniper.

On the other hand, my build with a warbow and 10 PD means my long range accuracy is significantly less at 130-ish wp, but on the other hand I can keep the reticule smaller for a significantly longer time, allowing me to hold my shot better. Also hitting like a truck means if I hit you, you feel it regardless of armor.

So, again, difference of roles. You are much better in shooting targets from afar (Sniper Rifle), while I am able to consistently bring down any horse that begins a charge on team mates or quickly break shields long before they close to melee (Machine Gun Turret). I absolutely adore bridge battles or urban fights due to this.

For the average user, I do suggest a concentration on WPF not PD, as it does make the Archer much more traditional, and not so mid-range sledgehammer support.

EDIT: Also the required minimum of 30 STR means I have a lot more grace against enemy archers due to the HP difference. It usually takes 5 or so bodkin arrows to bring me down, an advantage I greatly enoy when an archer takes the first "surprise" shot against me.

Suggestions Corner / Re: Suggestion for improving the balancing.
« on: February 23, 2011, 04:52:45 am »
I say this is a problem of bad map design where one side has a fast way to grab a defensible position.

In Balanced maps, if one side has a much greater amount of archers, the archer-heavy team usually score more free hits, and then their vastly outnumbered melee troops get slaughters and the archers overrun. At least on the NA server.

Of course, if the opposing team is rag-tag and splits up and has no coordination, then the archers will usually dominate as melee troops usually require Voice Chat to coordinate properly, where as Archers due to their build can just cluster together and choose group targets.

I do think though that it would be nice to balance archers somehow, though this may create issues for banner balance.

And at the end of the day, there are significantly more Infantry and Cavalry at the top of the scoreboards then there are Archers or Crossbowmen.

If infantry have half a brain and stop running in a straight line and stop refusing to use shields or take cover behind someone who has one, arrows stop being such a threat. Yes, if you lack a shield you take more hits, but that is the Sacrifice you are making for that extra melee capability, and is the price you pay for increasing anti-infantry/cav capabilities.

Archers seem fine as is, they are a support class and more often then not score wounds more then fatalities.

As for the map issue, not every map is an Archer paradise, as some are absolute buggers to be in if the infantry have half a brain or if there are fast cav. (Helms Deep comes to mind where it is much harder to avoid being snuck up on, as archers get butchered in melee and rightfully so).

Every build has a weakness and a strength, get used to it.

What I love are people who say it takes no skill to play an archer, as it does take skill to learn how to properly lead a target with these snail rounds, or being able to properly choose a target on a snapshot.

But really, at the end of the day, if you notice a weakness that you have, you first want to cry "NERF IT! OP against me!" Most people will always ridicule other builds not of their own, and want buffs to the build they use if unskilled/powerhungry.

Small nitpick with the Spartan, Kicking someone off a ledge and causing them to "suicide" will actually count as a TK and thus does alert the server.

Humorous post though!

I think that it will be good if you do 50 dmg in a round and if your team wins you will get -1 miltiplicator

yes, let us punish all new players and peasants...

I would say less exp for the first 10 levels or a gold bonus for equipment.

The problem is new players don't hang around coz they keep on getting cheesed by all the high lev players and their shiny shiny.  Lets face it... your new to the game...you start as a smeg head...you get constantly one shotted and your lifespan is the same as a snowball in a blast furnace...you go back to native which has a more even playing field.  :(

They could always create a level specific server.. ya know 'Peasant Wars, a Tale of Two Villages' or 'The Redneck Wars' for levels 1 to 10 or 1 to 15.

Ooooh this would be hilarious, a server that has a level cap designed for pezzies. "A Tale of Two Villages" sounds great!

If you retire at 15 you are reset at level 1 and keep all gold and stuff. If you retire at level 31 you get a 10% Experience bonus and an "upgrade" to an item as well.

Yeah, I'm really shocked that Canary and Aldryk aren't up there. I've seen whole squads retreat to safety when those two come around the corner together.

Ugh. Alone either of them are very skilled, but supporting one another or someone else, it is the kiss of death, timing is perfect.

General Discussion / Re: Question regarding couch
« on: February 21, 2011, 06:54:12 am »
I say yes, leave it, as it currently is an extremely risky option.

Every time I have seen a rider couch against aware enemies, it ends up with one or more arrows/bolts in the rider's chest or the head of the horse due to the straight line the rider is forced to take. You can break off and zig and zag a bit if you thrust on an angle with the lance, but with couching you are making more of a direct path towards your target.

Far too often it forces the rider too close to the side-stepping groundpounder who is now close enough to stick you with his fist if he even needs to.

You've clearly never been on the receiving end of the ATS Phalanx.

Indeed, clearly. This last week I sunk 50+ hours into multiplayer and I guess I missed it.

10842
ive been thinking about such clan but only with mongol-like cav players ^^ because how can there be no mongol group in crpg seriously

That would be amusing, do a Golden Horde faction, heh. Cav only would be hard to keep up though for the upkeep. The Mongolians did use infantry though...

Most clans are for this purpose.
Most clans are for this purpose but to differing levels of actually implementing it.

BRD for example is shield wall shield wall shield wall and occasionally time coordinated charges with cav and infantry down to seconds. Love them or hate them for using that one shield, they are coordinated no matter how you look at it (Regardless of battle skill, they use good tactics...). Other clans fail miserably at this. Several clans even say in their description that they promote teamwork but in practice you see pairs of people and a general "loose" plan at best. While some clans do seem to be better with "loose" tactics and work wonders (Like RS) the vast majority fail at it. Looking at ATS for example, I have never seen any indication that they use TS/Vent for coordinating planned assaults beyond their cav sticking together.

I am not saying that every clan is unorganized, I am merely saying that the majority use "tactics" that I disagree with.

Thing is I understand clans do this and i respect it but Its just for one reason or another all the clans I've looked through don't suit me so just exploring the options.

Tears of Destiny thanks for posting man, it's nice to see someone who shares the same idea :) Hopefully there will be more out there :D
No problem  :D
I am really looking forward to this actually, as I have a preference for organization, heh.

10844
I would be interested. It would be nice for a change to see melee troops form actual lines, and ranged troops stick together. With TS/Vent yo could get real coordination instead of "OK we all pull right and do our own thing kind of sticking together" which is as complicated as I have ever seen typed out in battles.

I am not a great player but I am willing to actually be in a clan where there is a real comander directing things.

Game Balance Discussion / Re: The Useless Longbow

How far were you? Projectiles have pathetic hit power at long distances if shooting uphill (Top of the arc to be specific). I remember being tinked from a lucky shot from an archer I could barely see across the map and it took about 8% of my health. I have the best 5 pound armor and 0 pound gauntlets for protection and that is it.

It was a bodkin arrow sticking out of me too...
