Title: heavy metal thread (no normies allowed)
Post by: Kadeth on March 27, 2017, 02:19:54 am
so since scientists recently confirmed that heavy metal and its many sub-genres are in fact the pinnacle of music, i thought it would be appropriate to make a new thread

share with us all ur favourite HEAVI METAL genre, band, song or whatever

\m/ \m/

i'll start with a newish 'murican band called horrendous, playing some old school melo death

Goblin metal reporting in, melo death for life (with a comedic touch for flavor).

Ensiferum 3 times
Insomnium was a opening band at one of them
Omnium gatherum
Raised fist

Saw a lot at a festival, but i was only but a wee little lad of 11 years at that time so i dont remember many of the bands, only remember meeting Petri the singer of ensiferum, and some of the people of Kataklysm i believe. Will probably travel more eventually, but i have to travel quite far to see anything.

Noice, seems to be more and more metal bands coming to australia so that's cool, only a 50 minute flight for me to go to and see shit.

Ensiferum must have been cool, although the post jari albums are a bit hit and miss

I'm mostly into doom/stoner metal stuff, usually with a blues or hard rock feel to it. I blame this on the fact that I play bass instead of guitar.

years ago, a thread on 4chan's music board described Electric Wizard as "the heaviest metal known to man" and that got me started in the genre

avant-garde jazz metal??? absolutely tearing it up with a baritone sax instead of a guitar

shoegaze drone metal? Angelic Process were one of those bands that made their own subgenre of metal, and made it work

prog metal? I don't even know

My favourite metal band, easily. It doesnt get more metal than to include a kazoo in the main melody drop. They always mix in fun instruments, like the Jew's hard (which ive just got my hands on, or teeth i should say), or joik singing. Keeping it fresh.

Also has a full non-metal album that is just atmospheric folk stuff. Used to fall asleep to it a good chunk of years back. Still makes me visualize many things, very pleasant treat for the ears.

Saw Insomnium live last week, they were super tight and the sound was surprisingly crystal clear, could hear all the guitar melodies perfectly. Seriously great show, would definitely recommend seeing them if any of you guys are into melodeath and get the chance.

The new album by Rings of Saturn is a goddamn masterpiece, i dont think ive ever felt so obliged to buy a album after the first time listening to it. The youtube videos do none of their songs justice in quality unfortunately but if you have spotify listen to this beast.

https://open.spotify.com/track/06u5wBofRozj1MIa9eIb4J

Around 40 seconds in, that part makes me smile but also feel like a machine. Listening to it at work kept me at double pace, which i only noticed when the songs ended.

Wacky stuff gravoth, sounds like it could grow on me after a few listens tho.

Some rep for NZ, generic melodeath in some ways but it's a pretty fun album:

Thats what it did for me, their Lugal ki en album just made me laugh, like what the hell is this. But as time grew i really came to appreciate their unique sound and out of this world technique. Even the vocalist who i first disliked, kinda made me appreciate his vocal range and ability to pull off such different growls which somehow fits really well with their concept.

Oh and melodeath is always top notch even when "generic". Never heard of Euphoreon but they seem really down my alley, nice vocals, nice pace. Funny someone in the comments mentions how he sounds like Petri from ensiferum, and i was about to type that here. And from New Zealand? Dope, one day i will return there and live out my life in the spots they recorded lotr on.

Agree 100%. I mean, melodeath bands often use the same chord progressions and formulas, but if It's done well I don't really mind, as long as It's not too repetitive.

Yea I'm not sure if they're still even a band, think it was a 2 man project with one from NZ and the other a German. Went to NZ south island last year, absolutely top tier place.

You might also like these guys (Aussie rep, but also ded band now i think):

Good stuff, something about the vocals is slightly off to me, but the instrumentals are on point for sure.

Best Aussie band, slow ass song but such a beauty. Singers clean vocals is a big hit and miss i think, but im down with them, and a violin is always instant boner.

I never really got into those guys but they are extremely popular here. Should probably check them out again.

Last Aussie band I promise :), some of these riffs are just top tier imo. Very heavy and technical, lots of vocal experimentation (an acquired taste) and lots of energy, great album.

Just a few I can remember. One regret is being too young to attend Sentenced's funeral gigs. That band would have been nice to see live. Also maybe Lemmy with Motörhead, Pantera and Dio, but you can never know when it's too late. Maybe I'll go see Manowar for lulz. They are currently doing their very last tour ever but I don't know if they'll come to Finland.

I liked this but not into that guys vocals, its seems strange that I would like or dislike a death growl since they are pretty much toneless.

One of my favourite melodeath albums ever, love the subtle synths, old school brutal growls, chuck schuldiner inspired riffing and like 50 lead guitar melodies in every song, never gets old

Well growls can vary quite a lot, i know i can be quite picky about them. Like the one Kadeth posted, there comes a deepness of the growl that turns me away at times, or a point of how brutal it is or w/e. Really good instrumental work though, it might even get me to appreciate it more over time, as that is usually how it goes for me.
Title: Re: heavy metal thread 2k17
Post by: Kadeth on October 20, 2017, 02:52:54 am
Growls definitely aren't toneless though, they still very much need to be in key, and there's a huge amount of technique and different styles. I prefer the classic death metal style over the modern deathcore, but both can be great when done well

Hands-down my favorite metal album, it's prog metal. Good shit, I'm sure anyone who's into this kind of music will love it.

Special mention for the namesake of the genre:

Another special mention for a lesser-known (likely underrated) Russian band:

I only listen to metal occasionally as I prefer calmer listening on a daily basis. Haven't gotten into it as much as my favorite genres.

oh yeah I almost forgot one of my favorites that I should mention - it's a bit out of the ordinary but still qualifies as metal in my book. Very sad music, though...

oh yeah I almost forgot one of my favorites that I should mention - it's a bit out of the ordinary but still qualifies as metal in my book. Very sad music, though...

I remember bingeing heaps of doom metal and post-rock a few years ago until I started feeling like it was too depressing, then to counter it I listened to cheesy power metal like Lost Horizon, Gloryhammer, Sonata Arctica etc for a while , this album sounds really solid though, huge atmosphere.

Death is one of my favorite bands. Their music is fucking incredible.

Agreed, they're one of those very few bands where every album is at least a 4.5/5 for me, apart from maybe Scream Bloody Gore, which is still an absolute classic, but I feel like Leprosy is where Chuck really developed Death's sound; such a great mix of heavy riffs with memorable melodies. I've always found it strange how everyone considers Sweden to be the birthplace of melo-death when Chuck was doing a really similar style of "Gothenburg" riffs in the late 80s, I guess it was just less pronounced. Either way, he's gotta be one of the most influential metal song writers of all time.

Really agree with you on the depressing part, I listened to a lot of music like that for a time and that kind of mood can really weigh on you.

Sick concert by the way, really good song choices, good audience participation etc. Got a bit too wasted though, so i was hungover at a whisky and beer exhibition which sucks! No magic potions unfortunately, i love that song.

And as it turned out they were leaving early in the morning so the person i was there with who knows the band well didnt get a reply if they were coming. It was more like a small after party at a bar close by, Ex deo were there though so i met them.

edit: got some footage im considering uploading, most of it awkwardly has me shouting rather poorly with the song which stands out quite a bit when you arent in the concert hall that was like 97.9dB, so i'll just stick to whatever doesnt

They always play Iron, and they dedicated Lai Lai Hei to a friend that was also there. Oh and Into Battle was somewhere in there too... and Wanderer. In general a very good playlist because all the old stuff is very good, but the new stuff has some good songs scattered in there which were pulled out like In my sword i trust.

New album released today, all on their youtube channel so praised be to the goblin king for that. I gotta purchase their albums soon, theyre really riding the line of trying completely wacky shit mixed with very solid melodical and varied tunes, and making it all work. I universally respect people doing that, mixing gimmicks/goofs into whatever but still performing top notch. Like in crpg, got a gimmicky build but totally making it work gets my nuts wet.

Ive just quite recently started properly delving into the power metal genre, there sure are some absolute gods in there. Maximum cheese, maximum power and am instantly sold. That whole first album of Pathfinder is just an incredible find i had recently, been blasting it every opportunity i get.

Been blasting these boys' 3 albums. Powermetal with extra (EXTRA) cheese. Basically the albums all follow some kind of storyline about a space fantasy battle between the heroes Angus Mcfife and Hootsman with their armies fighting the evil chaos wizard Zargothrax over centuries (Angus being the 13th of his name during the second album).

I absolutely love the cheesy lyrics, not to mention the instrumentals are really hype. Supposedly they have said that theres 21 albums planned for the storyline to play out, which is absurd and probably a joke(?) Formed by Christopher Bower who is also on the keyboard&vocals in Alestorm.

I was watching
(click to show/hide)
as one does everytime RLM puts out any new content, and they talk about that shitty Rawhead Rex movie. And they wrap it up by saying that its probably someones favourite movie, some metalhead or something. And of course in the comments someone mentions theres a heavy metal band named after the shitty movie, which i felt i had to look up.

Ive never been that much into heavy metal specifically (not to be mistaken for other genres within metal that i do like) except for some obvious Iron Maiden tunes, but this band actually struck on something i like. Sometimes making obscure references to shitty movies can actually be beneficial, even if 20 years later and the band is dead.
