I live in belgium, I walk across the full length of my country in a few minutes.
I ride mah bicycle.

Yeah too lazy to get my license right now, gonna need it next year when I will have to travel a distance longer than a 20 minute bikeride for the first time in my live (that's actually mostly true if I don't count the weekly train ride between my parental home and my dorm)

It's an oxford bike btw :3

Small city car that uses no gas to run, finding parking is easier, serves me well in cold months and short trips, otherwise I'm on my Bicycle.

Oh you NA... I guess you buy gas and then just pour some on the ground and light it on fire for fun cause it's so cheap, huh?

Japanese cars for win in my humble opinion. Yeah there's plastic but atleast it's better quality plastic than in 'murican cars these days .

Don't get me wrong I do like old 'murrican cars like Mustangs, Chevy Camaro (up until -69), Chevy Impala -67 (the Metallicar), Dodge Charger and Challenger, the Cuda etc... Just not for erryday drives with these gas prices. As a hobby definitely would love to restore some old classic car if I could afford it.

Well long enough post. Here's my wheels. Keep in mind it's 1996 Mazda 323 with 1,5 petrol engine and it gets 40mpg. Not too bad for a car that age imo and it accelerates fast enough because it weighs basically nothing .

Sure, I drive a truck. But I use that truck to haul soil, mulch, concrete, paving stones, trees, bushes and other plants, lumber, my riding lawn mower when I take it in for tune-ups, new furniture/appliances when I replace my older stuff, entire households when my friends or relatives move (mostly my kids lately), haul bicycles to various parks and trails in the 9286 square miles of the DFW area (you can't just ride to all the cool trails, especially to the various state parks within a couple of hours drive from the house), haul my canoes and tow my jet ski to the various lakes on the weekends, etc. Sure, you can do some of those things with a car, but not all of them and even those that you can do require more trips than putting it all in the bed of the truck. The German exchange student asked why Texans had trucks when she first got here. After spending a month with us and seeing all the things I haul around and do, she was like "Ahh, now I see".

Didn't exactly think about trucks when I posted... Just regular 'murrican 4 door saloons and such that are just bigger than they need to be and have usually terribad gas mileage.

Then again I really don't need that much stuff with me that I'd need a truck. Then there's this thing called a trailer that I use to move shit around at times. Just more practical for me. Not judging any truck owners. You have your preferences and maybe a bit different terrain and car culture compared to mine

+1!!! I want one of those next time I'm buying a car! Definitely one of the best regular 4 door sedans I've ever driven (and I've driven quite a lot different cars while I'm home at summer time working for my relatives and moving tourist's cars around). Handles perfectly. No noticeable under steer, maybe a little tiny bit over steer but that's always manageable.

Yes it handles suprisingly well. I remember when I wasnt used to the over steer thing yet. I was used to driving my parents dieselengine Mercedes. And when I got on the wheel of my car for the first time I shat bricks. Its a pretty descent sedan yes. There is enough room for 3 people in the back and the boot is quite large to store a lot of stuff. This winter is gonna be the first winter with my car. Cant wait to see how well my skis fit in it. =3

The best thing is how precise the handling is. I drove one Mazda 6 last summer and I just smiled most of the journey because it was actually fun to drive. The ride is not exactly the softest one out there, but it somehow doesn't dive all the way into the bumps like some heavier cars tend to do (krhm Volkswagen Passat). Don't be fooled tho, it will punish you if you are stupid and drive it carelessly into big holes on the road (which you shouldn't be doing even in a car with softer suspension because it's stupid and you break the car eventually by being stupid). Even my old loyal 323 is similar in the way the handling goes. Precise and nimble. It's a driver's car most definitely, not a sofa on wheels to make you sleepy and bored.

The catch with the 6 series in Finland is that when the first version came out (in 2002?) people didn't bother to buy rust protection to the chassis. So all the earliest 6 series models from 2002-2005'ish are slowly starting to rot from the bottom. Except the cars in Lapland because we don't use road salt as much there. The 2007 model is special in a way. It's some kind of 75 year anniversary version and it's the last of the breed with that original bodywork design (which looks cooler than the later models produced in 2008-2013). It doesn't have the same problems as the first of it's kind and the interior seems nicer.

Really a shame that most of the 6 series here are station wagons. I'm not touching those even with a long stick ... Sedan is so much nicer all around. Just have to find me one of those sweet 2007 sedans, preferably black but dark blue and dark grey could do as well :P.

So who's the bigger Mazda Maniac?

I don't think I've tried that particular model (I might have but, no memory of it. It gets hard to remember them all after couple hundred different cars :D) Not that many Citroens here anyhow. Do you drive yourself Kafein?

I don't like cars that feel too safe. That's part of my "sofa on wheels" comment since it's no longer a car after certain level of comfort (not a driver's car at least...) Just creates a falsely safe image of situations that can be nuts crazy dangerous. Big portion of new cars have steering that doesn't deliver any information about how the road feels. Probably the loss of feel is partly because the chassis and suspension numb it down too. My parent's Volvo S40 for example... I hate to drive that thing. No feel for the road at all. Just an "unbreakable" steel bubble rolling along, promises you don't die, just steer however you like and speed like a lunatic.

Roads would be heck of a lot safer place if we took the airbags away and put a 6 inch nail into the middle of steering wheel, pointing right at the driver's face

The times of Alfa Spiders and BMW company cars are over for me - thanks to the gods/me/universe/whatever.

Now it is a Star CG150 - cheap motorcycle (copy of old Honda model, assembled in Paraguay from mostly Chinese parts...). Dirt cheap and best way to do most stuff here on our dirt roads - plus public busses are cheap and always an adventure ;-).

Will share a sturdy old  F1000 pickup with some friends in the coming months, better for transporting building materials and the like, and easier to get that cal .50 mounted.... ;-)

I don't drive yet, there's very little need for that where I live but I hope I will in one or two years. The C5 is probably the mass production car with the "best" suspension of all time, and by that I mean it is a dream for the passengers (hence my remark about not feeling anything at 220kph). So you would probably hate it :)

1990 Buick Century, a boat of a car. It's a real jalopy, too. 198'000 miles on it, engine is in great shape but has several aesthetic and small issues (driver window gone for 2+ years, cassette player fried, power window on passenger front has burnt out motor, only one windshield wiper on the driver side, a short which causes the rear right signal to work about half of the time only, and more).

I use it for about 4 miles Tues-Fri, and 20 miles on the weekend.

I'm sure I would like it as a passenger too. Citroen has always had great suspension. Class leading on that area through decades. It's a shame really it's their only good quality :P. Do they actually make the suspension adjustable during drive? It's really useful option when you think about it. You can make it stiffer when you need precision to cut some tight corners and loosen it when you cruise on a long straight motorway.

I just don't want to buy Frenchie cars because I think they always have some ugly shape in them... Like Renault Megane coupe. Beautiful car in many ways but you can actually pinpoint the spot where the designer said "ah fuck it!" and drew some crap to finish the shape :D. And here French cars don't hold their value too well, so there's that also...

Really a shame it's such a good car to drive tho... Rear wheel drive (like all cars should be imo) and good weight distribution.

Two things put me off it: Fuel consumption and the fact that I don't want to be seen driving one :D.

Tbh noone really does. As much as I understand it from my countries perspective is that cheap BMWs are generally driven recklessly and idolized in tiny towncommunities where there really isnt much to do, generally by young people.  Angry unintelligent schoolskipping skinheads take their crappy cars for a spin and pretend they are real streetracers or just talk with their pottymouths and bad grammar, while listening to loud music with a lot of bass and eat hamburgers gotten from the local tiny bistro. They also generally take unintelligent goodlucking blond/brunette chicks who arent very smart for a spin aswell to act like bigshots.

Im not sayin this is everywhere ofcourse. But it is pretty common. These tiny communities cultlike dedication for BMWs is very true. I am not making this up.

These tiny communities dedication for BMWs is really legit btw. I am not making this up.

Citroen invented quite a lot of important automobile stuff (e.g. front wheel drive and hydraulics) but somehow failed to keep up their 20th century progressive vibe. For example, the last really weird Citroen production car was the BX with a stock bodywork literally made of plastic. Fit it with a 2000cc engine and you got the most popular police car of the 90s.

About the hydraulics, I think on some models you can change the height while driving, or just hack the system to be able to (although of course that is not safe at all).

Also, I think BMW is the official brand of traffic hooligans because driving one is fun. And the old ones give the illusion of being rich even though they are cheap because you drive a big german thing.

Nobody hates BMW. The drivers are dicks (except Tor. He is just Norwegian, it's not his fault he needs a powerful car)

Front wheel drive is cheapest to make. That's why it was invented :D. I remember one of my elementary school teachers had Citroen BX. It was old car even then and the red paint was sun burned but I still always thought it was a cool car because it had hydraulic suspension and the car sort of laid down when it was turned off.

I meant that you can adjust the shock absorbers in some cars to make it harder or softer to drive. I would use the Citroen hydraulics to get some ground clearance and go offroad :D.

Well, as regular TopGear viewer (I watched every single show and special :D), I can say that Clarkson moved from BMW to Audi when considering the cock-o-meter. Happened 2 or 3 seasons back.
Audi = new cock, BMW = buyable again!

oh cock!

Audi is the alpine skiing guy's car. They just attack the North in masses when the holidays begin. Ski box on the roof and... Oh cock, Clarkson is right...

There is two groups on the road that I loathe. Caravanners and ski box cars. The first group always crawls 70 km/h in front of you in dry summertime roads. The second group typically makes stupid over takings all the time and completely ignores the bad driving conditions during winter .

Not to mention that those roof boxes are madly dangerous in accidents. Most people don't realize or care that the allowed weight for those things are really really low. Basicly you should only load them with pillows and blankets...

I remember seeing crash tests with those things on top and even with rather slow speeds, they become deadly projectiles for those in front.

Aaaand those weird bike carriers that sit on the caravan coupling... I avoid those all the time. Those can't be save, as wobbly as they are. I hate driving behind them...

Oww, and my nemesis: Old men wearing hats! The most dangerous species in traffic...

Honestly i don't really care about aesthetics of a car, the things that mattered(and still matter to me) when i bought the car were: price (of course), consumption, and safety(crash test results and stuff like that), as much as you may be cautious when you drive, there's not much you can do if someone crashes into your car.
When I bought the Meriva (me and my brother), there was an offer on some Opel cars, discounted prices(plus an extra discount cuz we gave in our old Renault Clio to scrap) and they had all (i think) a normal fuel engine but with GPL/LPG implants installed.  Meriva and Corsa were sold at the same price(not the latest model, i think it was the Meriva model that was produced till the end of 2010, Meriva A or something like that), i wanted the  Corsa, because had better score on crash tests(and it also looks better imo), but my brother wanted to buy the meriva cuz in his opinion was more useful: bigger  insides, you could put in more stuff etc...
At the end my brother won the argue and we bought the Meriva, (i only chose the color:white, but if i could go back i'd chose black, if the car is dirty you don't notice much like on white) cuz afterall he was the one who had most money  :)
Meriva is not bad but i still prefer Opel Corsa.

We also have another car, a crappy '97 fiat Punto, i generally use it only when i have to go not far from the city, i call it  " coffin with wheels - walking coffin", nowdays Punto models are much better and safer, but the one we have it's really crappy, plus it's a car for midgets, i can't sit properly, my head touches the top .   My brother once went to Norway with that crap

I hate even more when dumb fucks enter the highway without even looking/paying attention if there are other cars coming, it happened to me once,  i quickly steered to the left, or it would have been a hell of a crash, luckily for me  there weren't cars on the other lane.
i forgot to add that generally i drive on the left lane when i'm on the highway( where i live most of the times there are  only 2 lanes, not much space in these valleys sorrounded by mountains :|), but that time i was close to the exit, so that's why i was driving on the right lane.

About BMW: They've put a lot of effort to eradicate the stereotype of only mafia guys riding it. Still, driving black BMW gives you 99% guarantee of police pulling you over for a "routine check" here in P.  :D
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Son Of Odin on October 29, 2013, 01:22:22 pm
I don't get the idea in caravanning... It's expensive, you sleep in a cardboard box near some road and shit into a bucket. When you take off you have to drive slowly so your box wont fall over. You greet every fellow cardboard box driver when you meet them on the road.

+ it would be cheaper to stay in a hotel or rent a cabin.

I sometimes have to drive caravan motorhomes to move them somewhere. I feel ashamed if someone gets stuck behind me and feel sorry for the poor guy so I slow down or stop and let him pass (which is not what a real caravanner would do). Real caravanner would just drive and drive and do the cock greeting every time they see another caravanner blocking 100 cars behind them

About BMW's i remember in the mid 90's as a kid riding on the backseat of our parents 4D bmw 3 series on a motorway, suddenly a small circular hole appears on the floor between my legs,  i totally shit myself staring at the asphalt while the car is going around 80mph, the rusty floor literally dropped to the freeway bit by bit, never fancied those cars since.

In my defense!

I'm no douché (EDIT: atleast not IRL) , but yes, with a BMW you will use some of that power once in a while, cuz it's fun.
I however, do not do it in any other way than driving it fast along the countryroads where i live 30miles (50km) to the nearest "city".

(93's BMW 525I "deluxe edition" everything leathery and electronic.) :)

2nd edit: 1.1~ litres / 10k mixed driving, 0.8-9L /10km economic.

No Modifications as of yet, though we are looking at an exhaust and maybe a power commander

I also have a pickup truck, and a 3000gt, but ill save those for another time.

220~mph with something that takes down the top speed might or might not be true, Im not the one to judge since I've never driven a sports bike.

No. At that moment I have Mazda 6 3.0 V6 (U.S. version), but since a few weeks I look over advertising services like a madman. So, in a month I will buy a 6.0 w12. Cars with a big petrol engine is characterized by a rapid loss of market value, which is why I want to buy several years Phaeton, and the difference in value I spent at gas stations. In my case it is reasonable, because I am addicted to driving fast, while doing little mileage. I do not know if you know, but it's the same platform, engine, transmission and more at the Bentley Continental - super premium car - not segment F!

ya pretty much this lol, with the power commander and exhaust im sure it could have reached over 200mph, though with the new sprocket i probably wont see that, another thing though is that my speedo is now wrong from my sprocket, so it will actually read between 10-20mph higher(idk yet which it is, i normally just stay with the flow of traffic).  So i have seen the speedo read at 220mph, but im sure it was wrong lol, though i was goin pretty damn fast, i just dont know how fast.

you must be richest guy around here

anyone can be rich when you have a awesome job and lived at home,  my bring home was $1800 every month, i have a different job now, and having next to no bills made me buy and mod my car.  Its paid off now, so the bills have shifted from cars to other larger more expensive things, House.

My analysis is that luxurious = bigger, in 'murican language and that fast = fast on a straight line. "Corner" just simply doesn't exist in 'murrican automotive terminology

my cars transmission isnt really built for straight line drag racing, its meant to auto x, or a more curvy track racing.  I have a twin clutch transmission which is bathed in oil similar to how a motorcycles is.  If you have ever seen formula racing, my cars transmission is pretty much the same thing, no manual clutching, all electronic, without the human input its quicker and less power is lost.

This isnt my car, but this is an auto x event with a really bad driver, and what appears to be a stock car, lol.

As a euromy old friend I would love to drive a true muscle car, probably an old one if I had the choice and if it was practical (it's not). Also if I had the money, as afaik the cost of importing one of these things is brutal even if the car itself is not that expensive.

well i try to be outside the norm, everyone wants to drive american muscle cars, so i go buy a jap tuner.  Everyone i know drives new Mustangs, Camaros, challengers, and chargers.

I doubled my driveway to hold more cars lol.

You'll kick the new Mustang's ass in the corners... GT-500 Shelby for example. Nearly 500hp but it has live axle instead of independent rear suspension! I just wonder who was the genius who said that's a good idea . That's stone age engineering :D

True 'murrican muscle cars are from the 60's and early 70's. That's only my opinion though... Everything else just seems so meh. Somewhere in the late 70's, early 80's it went totally wrong.

It's also a stone age price for a 500hp engine on four wheels, that's the american automotive philosophy right there

I agree the true ones are from the 60s and 70s, but I also like american cars from the 80s, even though they are very different. Corvettes and Camaros from that time looked uniquely futuristic in pure 80s fashion, but it's evident the champions of that era were the italian manufacturers.

But just look at the -67 Camaro... I mean come on! The 80's versions are dreadful compared to that. I agree Corvettes look awesome, but they lack the looks of a true balls to the wall American muscle car. Also Dodge Viper is one of the newer ones that is decent.

I don't like the original Viper that much. It's a pretty unoriginal sports car and they tried (partly succeeded) to fix that in later versions.

Especially compared to IROC-Z, which is probably the ugliest Camaro ever :D.

DeLorean DMC-12 is not exactly a muscle car with 150hp (in reality it's not even that much). Neither is it really American. Suspension from Lotus. Designed by an Italian bloke. Put together in Ireland etc... Cool looking tho, but it's not really a great car otherwise :P

I forgot to say:

I love the old classic American Muscle Cars. Everyone with just a tad of petrolhead does... how could you not love bigass V8 machines and a sweet looking body work on top.
But make no mistake - for every beautiful American Muscle car is at least one European Classic which is as beautiful as those Americans...

Most beautiful car ever made, and I am with Jeremy Clarkson on this one, is and will probably ever be the Jaguar E-Type. Hence why I would choose of all cars the Eagle Speedster: it's the beauty of the E-Type with the craftsmanship of Maybach and the power of an Ferrari :)

If I had to choose some reasonably priced sports car, I would go for Mazda MX-5 (with removable hard top) because I'm such a sucker for Mazdas. That car I could possibly own sometime because it isn't THAT expensive to buy and maintain. RX-8 would be nice too but the Wankel engine is expensive to maintain... Just throw massive amounts of parts at it and pour oil in all the time to keep it running right :F

Now a top tip if you want cheap 4wd car for some rally fun: Daihatsu Applause.

(click to show/hide)

Sounds lame I know but there's more to it than just the name. It's light weight 1,6l four cylinder. Again might not sound much but it develops 105hp and 134 Nm @ 4800 r/min and that in a light car is pretty decent.

I think that car would be perfect platform to build a cheap rally car for some serious fun during winter and why not in the summer too. I'm sure you can tickle more power out of that engine with modifications. Then update the suspension, brakes and tires. Take away back seats and put light weight seats to the front. Add roll cage and it's ready to go ;).

I have a dog,  surfboards,  mountainbikes and skis to transport,  not to forget always having a bed with you is great : )

Okay... Understandable if you want a dog cage in the car :P. I'm just angry at all the finns buying Mazda 6 Sportswagons because the sedan would do just fine for most of them and the Sportswagon is ugly abomination that almost spoils the 6 series. My uncle has one because he has a dog too, but I find it hard to forgive him for buying that car :D. There's not enough used sedan 6's in the market to have enough options when the time comes for me to update my car :(.

Station wagons have some drawbacks. Weight is one. Secondly, aerodynamics. They both have an effect on fuel efficiency. Back window gets always dirty of mud or snow. The boot starts leaking and creates draft inside the cabin when the car gets older, which is unpleasant. The chassis doesn't feel as stiff as it does in sedan because the bodywork doesn't support the structure as much.

Station wagons are the wannabes because they are almost always based on the sedan version, not vice versa. So the sedan is the car that was actually designed to do what it does. SW = compromised sedan to have more boot space.

Apply water to the burned area
Title: Re: What do you drive?

I'm sure aerodynamics is much more important than utility to the average car owner.

It's awesome when speeding through a part with a speed limit and other occasions

Let's say you're on a strip with 130km/h but you want to go faster w/o risking running into a radar. You wait till someone speeds past and you get behind him. Stick close enough to him and any radar pic taken is obsolete IF there are 2 cars in the same picture.
The other occasion would be that if you wanna go and there are slow people on the left side, get behind some other fast car and let him do the close up driving, the left turn signal or even the light signal... all those are actually forbidden

So, it's less about helping each other but about taking advantage :P

A friend and me used to call those "helpful" cars our "pacecar" :D

I think cmp says that space is more important than a tiny bit more fuel efficiency to many people.

I was thinking about autobahns without speed limits, if those still exist today. Driving close enough to the next car so that you can profit from drafting is incredibly dangerous, much more so than just speed. Speed tends to affect the amount of damage in a car accident, but not its likeliness.

Also I frequently see slow left laners that intentionally slow down without changing lanes when you get too close (previously mentioned suicidal drivers I've been with do that a lot).

Chevy Trailblazer SS
(click to show/hide)

I live in Huntsville Alabama, Every saturday night, all the racers meet up at a certain parking lot, we chill, hangout, check out other cars, by around midnight we all head off to the gas station about 3 miles down the road (going away from the city), where, we fill up, and check out everyones fast rides. From there, the race leader ( owns a trailblazer SS w/ full tuneups, nitrous, twin charged V8, etc..) decides where we race at, we have a few locations such as the "chicken shack", "speedway", and other backups to go to after the cops bust them. it is hell of fun.

--most SUVs i agree are shit, and the only real use i could think of is keeping your family safe.. have you seen an SUV collide with a honda civic?

The SS Trailblazer has got to be the only SUV i would purchase. i love the look of it, and it can get up and go!
Stock:

absolutely this.  seriously,  an "offroad" station wagon like the passat all track is suitable on road, off road and has a big trunk,  just like i like em :D

Now those sound much better. Passat all track, Subaru Outback (actually rather cool car. Could want), Volvo XC70 and Audi all road come to mind. EDIT: Skoda Yeti is awesome too!

I bet Subaru Outback is better off road car than any SUV out there. If it's "safety" you want and crash into Honda Civics every now and then, why not buy real off road car like Land Rover, Jeep, Land Cruiser or Range Rover? Even Toyota Hilux 4wd if you don't have kids. There's actually some real benefit for your gas money since you can go off road with them :D.

"Have you seen SUV collide with Civic" argument is just weapons race of the roads. Everyone buys bigger and bigger cars to be "safe". Many times it seems to allow them to drive like invincible douchebags as a result, which is just even more dangerous than driving a Honda Civic. SUV owners often forget that there is always a bigger one, trucks in this case.
Title: Re: What do you drive?

SUV owners often forget that there is always a bigger one, trucks in this case.

Moreover, SUVs are city vehicules, where accidents hardly ever result in car drivers getting seriously harmed physically given the relatively low speeds. The only "security" thing you should really care about is how much car damage is going to cost you, and there are few choices worse than SUVs when it comes to that.

So we've come to conclusion that if you own SUV, don't post in this thread because you're an idiot and we will ridicule you for it :D.

For me the most annoying part is that due to the higher ride I can't look through their back window in front of them like I do with normal cars. Damn wankers...

TopGear had a nice test. The took cars like the X7, ther Q7 and some big Volvo and compared them on the road and off-road.

Conclusion for on-road was that they are wobbly and uncomfortable compared to "normal" cars.

Off-road was funny: They were supposed to drive up a wet green and carry on through a less steep forest part. Iirc the Volvo came the longest way but they all died out somewhere along the way. Cut. You see a LandRover Defender from '68, slowily just driving past them. No electronics in it whatsoever, just old fashioned metal... was funny to look at :D

EDIT: Also, I believe this product was specificly designed for SUV driver...

http://www.ebay.com/gds/7-Benefits-of-Owning-an-SUV-/10000000177404569/g.html

The "there is always bigger" argument is stupid and doesn't work. Yes, there are trucks, but those are much more rare than smaller cars. Furthermore... so what? If you are safer from 85% of the driving population by owning a SUV, how on Earth does "well there's still SOME trucks out there" invalidate that? Basic probability theory.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Son Of Odin on October 31, 2013, 02:49:03 pm
But you completely miss the point Xant. I don't see any sense to buy bigger and bigger cars for safety reasons. It's just dumb to have the average car size go up for reasons like that and have the green party fuck us all in the arse as a result. Maybe you'll mow down some poor civic driver every now and then but it doesn't help you much when you collide with other SUV's or trucks.

Good driving habits play a much bigger part than arrogance and active safety features. You can and will improve your safety by driving smart and staying alert. Active safety is overrated.

Lol @ ebay buying guide logic. "4. Vehicle Handling" and "6. Fuel Efficient Options"
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Xant on October 31, 2013, 02:54:02 pm
It doesn't help when you collide with other SUVs or trucks, no, but it helps if you collide with smaller cars.. which would be a definite bonus no matter what, even if the amount of smaller cars was 0.01%, but seeing as the majority of cars are smaller than SUVs, it's a great benefit; it's far more likely to crash with a smaller car than a truck.

It isn't an "either or" kind of choice, either. You can own a SUV and have good driving habits. Arrogance and no active safety features is far worse than arrogance and active safety features.

Sure, but just have to separate two different things: SUVs and "the average SUV driver." Same with BMWs; nothing wrong with the cars themselves, but the drivers tend to fit a stereotype. Doesn't mean every driver has to be a jerk, though.

Haha... You must admit he has a point, but it isn't enough to conclude SUV's are good as a whole.

SUV's are just not good value for your money. If you want safety, buy a Saab or a Volvo. Good bonus with those is that they are not as likely to fall over as SUV's ;).

Sure, but just have to separate two different things: SUVs and "the average SUV driver." Same with BMWs; nothing wrong with the cars themselves, but the drivers tend to fit a stereotype. Doesn't mean every driver has to be a jerk, though.

Again agreed. Still I wonder why so many people are buying SUV's. Only sensible argument is active safety. Everything else about them is crap...

They are buying them for the room, you get the 3rd row seating option to be like a van, or the ability to put the seats down and become an oversized stationwagon, all while being able to tow small things(i really frown upon people who tow stuff with a car, its so bad for the transmission and frame of the vehicle, they are not meant to tow trailers and such, sure they can do it, but they shouldnt).

Im not sure that they have the same options in Europe, however in the U.S, they are coming out, and kind of have been for a while with these C.U.V's.  The compact utility vehicle, meant to give you the gas reduction that you would see in cars, while the utility of the SUV.  Most get above 30mpg, which i might add is pretty damn good, considering my car gets 18 lol! and with premium (93 octane), though thats my fault for tuning it.  I guess it also comes down to preference as well, some people just might like the look of it compared to a stationwagon as well.  I myself do not like stationwagons at all, every time i think of one, i think of this:

Which reminds me of National Lampoons  Vacation

The problem is that you could just instead have a van with seats in the back or a proper offroad car (Range Rover etc) to give you the extra space, seats and security. Not some ridiculous wannabe off road vehicle.

Volkswagen Transporter (Multivan these days?) destroys SUV's at every front. Cheaper taxes. Has good diesel engines with low fuel consumption. More room for the passengers. You can also take the seats away and use it as a regular van if you want to.

I drive small and medium sized SUVs and I'm quite happy about them. Obviously sedan or even wagon (kombi) behaves better on smooth road, so SUVs have disadvantages, but I enjoy sitting high (so looking above the cars in front of me), big trunks (which matters when you have kids and want to take them for a longer trip - even high kombis won't give you that and if they do - they are loooong so difficult to park in the city), sensible fuel consumption combined with relatively high power (diesel  :D).

I don't go off-road, but I occasionally drive unpaved roads or drive in fresh snow. Trust me, there is nothing better than SUV if you go around the city covered with fresh snow and you do not see the small obstacles like this damn bumps that are supposed to slow you  down.

And sorry, cars like Transporter (drove those too) are painful in the city.
Title: Re: What do you drive?
Post by: Son Of Odin on November 03, 2013, 03:19:49 pm
Nah I still don't believe you can't do same exact stuff in the city with a station vagon, van or a minivan (also called people carrier, MPV or MUV.)

There's just no sensible reason for SUV's. They aren't exactly small and nimble to park in the city easily, nor are they as spaceous and safe as many of above mentioned. The ride is hard and the vehicle is likely to fall over if you make a mistake. You get the high driving position but that's about it. Overall SUV does even better work than a BMW in making you look like a cock . Atleast BMW is a good car.

Yeah but driving a VW Transporter won't give you any pussy or intimidate people

Isn't that the 'point' of expensive SUVs?

SUV's are supposed to be family vehicles Christo :D. You buy them after you found the one pussy you like very much and had children come out of it. Then you have the midlife crisis and need to show off.

I don't understand this fascination with cars. Bikes are cool, they are basically the modern day equivalents of horses. But cars? They have doors and seats. They are tame and domestic. It's not even exciting to drive fast in a car, the landscape just rolls by faster. On a bike, you actually need skill to stay on the road when you're going fast into a turn. Also, you can carry a lance to fight opposing riders or the peasants on foot.

I got 2 problems with having a bike

Well, 3 but that's not important right now (cash)

First is not ideal in every weather condition, second one is safety

But other than that it could suit me well, I go around alone about 90% of times if not more

I agree bikes are a lot more fun. BUT, you can't say it isnt exciting putting your sports car into 6th gear, going 180+ MPH

or maybe your definition of "fast" is A LOT different than mine

Well I have to admit I don't have a lot of experience with fast cars. I've once driven a Nissan Z350 at about 160-180 km/h for a few kilometers, that's about it. I've had more fun than that on a 125 ccm beginner's bike, to be honest.

Mazda 2 mk1? Never seen those anywhere. Build quality should be superior if you have one that's made in Japan that's for sure .

They recently announced that even the 6 series is getting built in Japan from now on (2014 model). That's excellent news for anyone who knows what they are capable of when they have production in Japan. They must have some sort of car sensei there :D.

2007 Buick Lesabre. Big 4 door sedan with ample trunk space. Turns and parks like a fucking van. I like actually having room for my legs in the driver's seat. I'm 6'2" and I can't even imagine how uncomfortable driving must be for really tall folk. My significant other's parents have a Mitsubishi Eclipse and I can't fit my knees under the steering wheel with the seat all the way back.

I also ride a 1984 Kabuki Skyway road bicycle. Got it for $75 on Craigslist. Just needed new tires and minimal maintenance to get up to tip top shape. Luxury leather seat with shocks (the seat, not the bike frame). After cycling on a hybrid for a long time, pedaling on this thing feels like you are just floating a couple feet above ground. It just goes. I wish there were more warm summer nights. Nothing beats cycling in 60-70 degree weather under the glow of orange streetlights, fireflies, and crackling thunderclouds in the distance.  8-)   8-)

I'm 6'2" Yes, exactly this.

I don't need a car atm. My second to last car was a ford escort mk3.

I fled the house the first time I was psychotic (believing the house was surrounded by mafia). I didn't take my car but went on foot instead, and could hear voices whispering that I hadn't taken my car because it was wired to explode.

A few months later (I was on resperidone)  a neighbour knocked on the door to tell me that my car was on fire. It was destroyed by... an electrical short.

Cloudy...inspired....depends on your point of view.  8-)  :P  8-)

Don´t know what kind of reputation Mazda has, but my "lady" has never let me down so far (+150k km), if it was from salzburg(austria) to orebic(croatia) and back through extreme heat and awful bumpy roads with a completely stuffed car or the harsh winters with either tons of snow (austrian alpine style) or below -20 degrees (although once my dieselfilter froze, gotta admit that)

It´s a good car, better than my old Nissan Micra, that ol bastard :D

Well my old trusty Mazda has done almost 370k kilometers :D. ~150k km of which I've driven myself and it has never let me down, not once. I'd call that good for a small petrol engine already but I know it can do well over 400k maybe closer to 500k if the chassis doesn't rust too badly before that.

So what I've done to the engine is changed oils, plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and fixed some leaking air intake housing just recently. Just maintenance parts basically.

Other things I've done to the car is I had to change one ball joint on the front, change exhaust suppressor, installed new break disks and pads, changed break fluids and did some try hard welding on the chassis. Not a catastrophic list if you know something about cars

your car should run practically forever with proper maintenance, of course things will get old, rubber begins to erode, and metal rusts.  But as long as you keep on top of it, it will run and run.  Im sure someone has seen the report about the old lady who seen dinosaurs and rides one still to this day, with her lifetime warranty of course.

Well there comes a point when it doesn't make sense to keep "on top of things" with a car anymore. Shouldn't get too attached to a car that's giving you and your wallet a hard time.

A big malfunction in the engine can happen even if it was taken care of properly. Replacing some parts of a modernish car can be difficult or downright impossible to a point where the cost for fixing it goes up just too high. I know I have to do some welding if I want my car to have plates next year. No doubt about it. Just have to see if I can fix it or let the car go. You can weld a properly old car more easily because it's made of thicker steel but a car like mine it sucks. It's like welding paper... Guess I just have to practice welding more before I get to it

Do they not have junkyards in Europe?  You can find car parts for like $15 dollars, you can buy alternators, radiators, whole engines, blocks, wheels, doors, the list goes on for cheap, like around 90% of the normal price.  A new alternator i had blown cost me $120 dollars in a Honda Civic, i found one for $15 shortly after in a junkyard....sigh, oh well.

on a side note, i actually sell car parts on a car forum, and still do have some parts, kind of a good way to give back to people who want them and have the same car, as ill not ever need them again.  (please go stalk me lol, i use the same user name)

I don't think we have junkyards that big in Finland and that's the problem. Junkyard has to be quite big and have a lots of stuff in it. Most of the time they just take usable parts out of the car, put them on sale with quite high price and crush the rest of it. I would prefer junkyards where I could go and take some parts out of scrap cars myself and pay less because I did the work taking the part out. That's just not the way it's usually done here.

Aaand junkyards don't help you if your chassis is being eaten by rust. Just demands mending skills :D

We have a Junkyard called "Crazy Ray's", they have over 8,000 cars, with 5 junkyards all over the damn place.  They keep playing commercials as of late, advertising you coming to pick their junkyard clean cuz everything is cheap.  Its one of those yards where you come and do all the work yourself, and they pay a flat rate for whatever the part is, so like $50 for a door, any door, or $15 for any alternator.  Its a pretty nice place, for a junkyard anyways.  They post on facebook the news cars coming in, and where they will be located.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Crazy-Rays-Auto-Parts/130840818155

as for the body work, well you could replace it with sheet metal, either rivet it and putty it, or weld it.  I've never done it, but like i said, a pack of beer, and a friend who can weld will get u a long ways.

Not a single fuck was given whenever he started in WRC, he barely made a few points. He even crashed once during the shakedown and couldn't even start at the Rally. Pretender if there ever was one.

Don't get me wrong, he can obviously handle a car but he is far from being good in the proper sport. Just a posterboy for the kiddies...

Ken Block is just silly... He's a lot of things, surely not a proper Rally driver.

Not a single fuck was given whenever he started in WRC, he barely made a few points. He even crashed once during the shakedown and couldn't even start at the Rally. Pretender if there ever was one.

Don't get me wrong, he can obviously handle a car but he is far from being good in the proper sport. Just a posterboy for the kiddies...

this, excellent stunt driver. that is all

Shadow-selfie !

Normal selfie is too mainstream

The motor of a MR-2 is a little bit special right ?

Actually no, the original motor is the same as Celica GT, Corolla or Matrix except it's installed in the rear of the car

The one I want (2zz-fe) is from an Celica GT-S, Corolla XRS or Matrix XRS
