Capturing 1080p - Nations Cup
« on: June 04, 2012, 07:48:28 pm »

Hey folks,

Nations Cup coming up - One thing came to my mind.

Maybe somebody should record match ups?

Problem: If you don´t own a SSD HD you can´t get fluent recordings in 1080p with FRAPS (atleast I can´t get 60 or more fps ingame).

Now, I found a way to get fluent ingame fps and get fluent video capture in real 1080p.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fbsEt6VFrA

Using Playclaw instead of fraps solved many problems.

Comment on the quality etc. please.
Do ppl. know methods / codecs for 1080p recordings that give you good quality and low size?

Preferably people who know what they talk about :-)

30 FPS is good enough. I've recoded 1080 with FRAPS at 30 fps and it's plenty smooth enough for the job.

One thing I will say about FRAPS is that it's output codec is a pile of shit. So if playclaw has a better codec that's more compatiable with AVID/Premier/Final Cut then awesome!

I'll give it a go and see who it works out with my 2 piles of shit.

I got my hands on an older Playclaw release. 1.8 something.

Tested the newest 3.0, apparently u could even capture 60 fps with it.

Playclaw definetly is worth a try, since its more sophisticated compression options make it stand out before fraps, atleast for live capturing, assuming you dont have a SSD but an otherwise nice comp.

For best codec use 3 out of 4 cores (4 core cpu).
25 fps is pal standard.
Fluent image and most important, not as much to write for the HDD.

No worries, ingame fps will be stable.

After that, use Vegas for cutting (merge into uncompressed avi)and StaxRip for encoding.

Somebody send me premier pro or after effects xD. Need those programs!!!

Problem: If you don´t own a SSD HD you can´t get fluent recordings in 1080p with FRAPS (atleast I can´t get 60 or more fps ingame).

Check your CPU usage.  On my system, FRAPS is CPU-bound, not I/O bound.  I can record to my hard disc or SSD and there's no difference -- problem is CPU is 100%.

I greatly improved FRAPS by ovecrlocking my CPU.

Still, I may check out PlayClaw.  FRAPS has been good for years but it's behind the times.  Being single-core is really making it suck.
Crush your enemies; see them driven before you; hear the lamentations of their women.

Phenom Quad 955 @ 3.4 Ghz
8Gb 1666 mhz ram
Gtx 570 oc

Cpu isnt that great anymore, though I assume that it is the harddrive chocking.
60 fps at 1920x1080 equals over 100mb per second for writing.

5400rpm hdd wont make that.

SSD can write 440 megs per sec.
That would do it. Though 500 bugs for 500 Gigs is out of proportion.

Yeah I'm over FRAPS, it's been a while since they had a good update and I had to do some much screwing around last time I formatted my editing brick to be able to use the stuff. Freaking codec nightmare.

You can also solve the write speed problem with multiple HDs. For example if one of the hds only job is to write data for fraps while the other does the rest it works quite well (assuming the hd has a fast enough write speed). You could also set up a raid 0 to try to get past the write speed of your hard drives as it does increase performance.

Sure, you can get a VelociRaptor for what, 150 bugs.

Still, I doubt it has enough performance for uncompressed 60 fps. Even 30 fps should be a problem.

Raid 0, sure, though I got other, better things to do xD. Still no guarantee.

Uncompressed footage looks awesome, but cpu and hd must be really really good.

Birthday soon....might spend 800 bugs for a little "upgrade".
