Title: Pokemon Go
Post by: okiN on July 17, 2016, 07:56:01 pm
So having taken my first pokewalk today, observations:

2/3 of the time when you catch a pokemon, the game freezes and you get nothing. Given that you need to catch like a gazillion to progress in the game due to the leveling system, this is a bit of a problem.

After this happens and you restart the game, more than half the time you then need to keep retrying ~5min to get past login errors.

1/3 of pokestops work as intended, 1/3 of the time you need to try them 5+ times before they work, 1/3 of the time they don't work at all.

The tracking system for "nearby" pokemon is useless, broken garbage.

Gyms are all going to be held forever by turbonerds who have absurdly high-level pokemon that you can never beat.

So yeah, all in all there is some room for improvement. :|

The point of this game isn't even the game. This shit is crazy on a cultural level and also microtransactions are projected to be something like $57 billion dollars globally by the end of the year. People from diverse walks of life are interacting and finding commonalities that weren't perceived before. People are getting out- it's crazy. From Michigan to Minnesota over the past week I've seen throngs of people travelling and talking on the streets. My walk to work used to be just me, no other pedestrians most days, now everyone is out, more active, having fun, and interacting more socially, even if it's over something trivial. The implications this has for the medium is game changing in a lot of ways, and a smart government would do well to take notes.

"We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one new delusion and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.

…Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

- Charles Mackay (from his book ... "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds", 1852)

Yeah down here where I live I've seen large groups of people walking around staring a their phones obviously playing it. Weekdays and weekends. I'm not all that fussed about it. I'd rather play the old games on an emulator. It also sucks if you are in the countryside miles away from a Gym, even my nearest one in a city is 20 mins walk away. But still, it's very interesting as a social phenomenon.

This game is Ingress (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticproject.ingress&referrer=ai%3DCaPMBg-KMV5TTHKPlzAa4vZAw0IPWv0X3qNLbUK3XsL1eCAAQASC_4LADYLEFoAH5_NTcA8gBAaoEIU_QhLob3QnaomUkowSi-drpKor1Q_wZkpLwddHhup3_SIAFkE6IBgGwBgGAB--CqyOIBwGQBwKoB6a-G9gHAQ%26gclid%3DCjwKEAjw_LG8BRDb1JTxm8uP_UwSJADu_8pWNm27DYNWWDOE2dPcsYftjp9feud_ukgVej7aRaCJThoCpLjw_wcB%26conv%3D999636601) with Pokemon skin. Only reason why it is so damn popular is Pokemon franchise. Imagine if they replace Pokemon hunt with Jedi battles? It is not groundbreaking it is not new, it is result of modern culture and tendency of large groups of people to worship same shit majority already does. You can even call it replacement for religious influence in lives of everyday people. We replaced Christianity with Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Pokemon and Marvel heroes.

What kind of toy you gonna buy for your baby boy? Most likely some Minion shit. For baby girl? Frozen... this is happening all around us, Overwatch is another example. It ain't that good, it is just too damn popular so you perceive it being better than it actually is. CS:GO too. Pretty much every popular video games is overhyped.

Absolutely love this new Pokemon game, it's revolutionary, I can't believe how many people are swarming the streets, cycle tracks, parks, fields and woods. It's never been so easy to make a living catching and mugging easy targets, I've lost count of the amount of money, new wallets and phones I have obtained over the past week, gotta catch em all bro.

Outdoors things gonna happen to people when they go outdoors.

Well, I go for a long walks every day and don't get robbed, mugged or anything of that sort. This is going to make my life harder because I don't play it and thus, do not know locations of gyms or stuff like that. All I know, when I see bunch of people in one spot, turn around and choose another path. It is not yet supported in here, but people already found a way to circumvent that little issue...

It is really sad that people need an excuse to get outside on a sunny day. Not to mention real life pokemons, little children, who require a lot of effort to catch and keep. Besides, they are much more interesting and less predictable than silly mobile game. I do understand kids who play this, but adults...

Edit: Second paragraph makes me sound like some kind of pedo  when I mentioned kids, I meant our own children. Not children of other people lol

Vader is certainly Jesus tier, judging by the amount of stuff he's involved into. There used to be a time, in galaxy far far away, when we could have SW product which does not involve Daesh Vader in some way. Then hippies came and gave birth to hipsters. World has literally gone to shit and imploded from amount of bullshit concentrated on planetary surface.

Going outside the nose in your phone the whole time looks pretty nerdy though! I can perfectly understand why people mock them, but at the same time its cool to see the "internet" people interacting in real-life. People can see how our online community interacts on the web.

I'm too old for that shit, also get nauseous for some reason if I look at screen while commuting. Usually I'm fine with everything, that is the only thing that makes me wanna barf. For me it like this, place buds in my ears and put on some good music. Usually take a nap or two, with music on.

Not to mention dangers of being surrounded by people while reading crap that gets posted in here. Could legitimately go snackbar and slit someones throat out of sheer desperation and disappointment in humanity. It is better to listen to 'sympathy is what we need my friend cause there's not enough love to go round', builds up tolerance bar :D

I'm joking the whole way ofc, even though I happen to mock your kind from time to time... the ones that gets on my nerves mostly are those who are nose-deep in their whatever + walk accross the road; if manslaughter wasnt a crime I would have happily rolled over some, they really arent fit to live.

I'm with yah on that one... some guy was walking slow af this morning nose-deep in his phone (probably playing pokemon go, let's be real). I was trying to make a left turn into my building's parking lot and had to cross 2 lanes of traffic on a busy road. I finally had my chance and started going when I noticed this preppy-looking bitchboi walking on the sidewalk towards the entrance to the lot. I had to keep going cuz there was a big SUV and tractor trailer in the oncoming lane, and I was already committed to the maneuver. There was no crosswalk across the entrance and I didn't notice he had his phone out yet but I was thinking to myself "surely he won't just walk right across the entrance without looking around and noticing me first." Idk why I though that at the time, but obviously it was a big mistake... he kept walking right on across the entrance, no fucks given, eyes looking down at his phone. I slowed down as much as possible and then floored it right before the oncoming vehicles got too close. Even then I had to swerve a little to maneuver around him, my leftside mirror coming within maybe a foot (~0.3m for your euros) of his backside. Not once did he look up and turn around or act at all surprised. Not once did he acknowledge my cars' existence, or any other vehicles'. This is what society has come to... I can only hope Darwin's theories are proven true with regards to people like him.

I cycle to work and the same thing pisses me off. People on phones crossing the road not paying attention and they assume there's nothing coming because they can't hear an engine but don't bother looking.

If only there were more silent electric cars around.

I hate cyclists, they always make the least effort to go around me and just barely avoid me with a couple of cm. Motherfuckers theres an entire sidewalk of space, just slide over a meter or two.

Ive had no experiences with people being unaware cause of their phones yet though, but its bound to happen sooner or later. Although pretty much everyone is either looking at their phone, or listening to music. Everyone shuts themselves out of the rest of the world when going outside, so theres a lot to pay attention to in order to not hit one.

This is now a venting thread.

I tend to walk while listening to music but i usually look around. However cyclists are an issue, they are mostly douche bags tbh. Almost got knocked off by some stupid kid today. Sidewalk is like half a meter with lampposts every five meters making it even narrower. It ain't meant to be used for bikes, people can barely fit (some whale couldn't). Kid just passed me by like half an inch or so, coming from behind. Next cyclist was using road, like he should. Cyclist truly believe that sidewalk is their territory.

Before you say how I should listen to my surroundings and get buds out of my ears, let me remind you that chances of collision with normal pedestrians are almost zero (unless they are running like wild animals but that's another story). While with cyclists chance that something bad will happen is pretty damn high.

But they aren't the worst participants in traffic. That cake goes to taxi drivers. I hate their kind.

Quote

I listen to music when outside alone (with friends it is different story) for two reasons: first being, music makes me relaxed and everything is easier to do while listening to music. Although I love nature sounds, but cars and rest of man made noise is not my cup of tea. Second reason is due to man made noise, specifically people or lets say old nannies who like to shout and non stop chat with someone about stupidest shit possible and I'm not the kind who can ignore it easily. Can hear people talking clearly from 20 meter distance from me and it is really hard to let it go and focus on something else. Earbuds are god given to my kind.

Major European cities are awesome for cycling because tracks for cyclists are nearly everywhere. Pedestrians have their, quite generous sidewalk and cyclists have their own space. Unfortunately, in ex-commie cities there is no such thing and sidewalk isn't available for walking in many parts of town because car owners (due to lack of underground parking space) treat it as parking space. This is so widespread that police are afraid to start writing tickets outside downtown area. They would have to tow thousands of vehicles every hour and there would be many conflicting situations. However, I would totally do it and place half of citizens in custody if necessary. Until they learn how to behave.

I'm so disapointed the people who got arrested for baiting and robbing go players weren't dressed as team rocket.

so i parked my car while driving with my gf next to the lured point. i was not allowed to park there, but since we were both in a car and didn't obstruct the traffic (well maybe a little bit) i didn't mind. in 30 secs a guy drives by, stops next to us, pulls down window and shows police id saying we can't park here. then he sees us hunting pokemons, starts to laugh and says... well fuck it... and drives away. i seriously think he wanted to park on our place instead as it was the last one around where he wouldn't jam the traffic in the street.

These kind of games are the future. You know why? Money.

Incredibly potent marketing tool. You can tweak the game, that way bringing the people to the very location of the store that is paying for ads. Radio, TV, Internet or non AR games can't match that.

You can even persuade people to buy stuff, by giving them in-game incentives to do so. Dark ages are upon us...

Zuckerberg must be kicking himself in the groin for not being the one to partner with Niantic. Instead, he paid billions for useless VR.

Indeed, even though most of the things brought by augmented reality are already existent on the plane of reality: we are already seeing pubs signs everywhere in real life, on our computers, televisions and every man-made activities that brings attention have commercial partnerships. I dont think mankind is going to be "lured" ( ) much more efficiently, but it does open some innovative methods and new platforms!

In-game incentives to buy real life shit? That would be even more frown upon than pay2win stuff. Not saying they wont try.
Also VR and augmented reality are two parts of the same technology. Not to add VR is much more adapted to the video game industry, AR is tooled for more down to earth uses. Pokemon GO is just one of the few uses that a video game can make out of it.

I'm waiting for hologram technology to become a thing, and AR to become a tool of daily life, THAT will be something to see!

Pay2win stuff is only frown upon in hardcore gaming community consisting of obese, know-it-all (thanks to Google and Wikipedia) neckbeards. They are not even main audience for those games. If it was up to them, companies like Supercell wouldn't be sold around for nine billion dollars nor will make billion dollar annual profit.

I'm talking about regular sheeple in here, not your fatso redditor who won't even bother leaving house to hunt pokemons when he can cheat the system with bluestacks/xposed and collect pokemons from his oversized couch.
Title: Re: Pokemon Go

Even casuls frown upon badly veiled, hardly worth pay2win stuff.
Some pay2win games are commercial success but they are those who balance the negative impact of pay2win with solid gameplay.
And by pay2win I meant basically every accessory stuff beside main game (includes DLC, skins, etc..).

Few frown upon but they still play. Game too good, addiction too strong, reasoning gets tossed out of the window... rest aren't smart enough to see it is just carrot and stick instead of well made game.

From what I've read, companies like coffee shops, fast food restaurants are already using Pokemon GO to 'lure' customers. They buy lure modules meant for regular gamers but I hear that Niantic is working on premium modules, for commercial use. As I said, this is just beginning. In next two years there will be flood of similar games, every major franchise will have one. Instead of running around, people will go to commercial venues to 'play' the game.

Pay2win stuff is only frown upon in hardcore gaming community consisting of obese, know-it-all (thanks to Google and Wikipedia) neckbeards.

Get a better phone.

Some pay2win games are commercial success but they are those who balance the negative impact of pay2win with solid gameplay.

Hardly. Pretty much all social/mobile games that make any money at all are the worst kind of pay2win garbage, and yet remain hugely popular. I asked or overheard these people in their 40s that never really played anything before candy crush and they either are completely clueless or simply don't care.

Don't care about me depends on the person. What I mean is that they don't care about playing bad games. Taste is an empty word if you know only a handful of games.
