Post by: SugarHoe on March 05, 2014, 01:00:28 am
So my laptpp just like shits on itself and screen turns black, then sound cuts off. It happens either like just starting a game or when like I've been playing for 30 minutes. Halp ples

Any game, or specifically warband? Also what kind of laptop are we talking about here? Newish gaming one, old shitty one, old calculator?

Edit: Could be overheating. Do you play on anything other than a hard cool surface? Cause having the laptop on a cloth or other heat-retaining surface is no good.

Every game, can't even play men of war for 10 minutes, seems like i can play crpg or mount and blade the without crashing longest though.I got a little laptop fan underneath. Not the best but it works alright, gaming laptop from 2009.

Get HWmonitor and check temperatures when you play/when it's idle.

Tell us what it's like.

Can you open it up and clean the hairs and stuff out of it? In 4-5 years computers can get full of gunk that makes them overheat

This happened to mine a while back. If it starts buzzing because the same sound is being replayed over and over and over then i'm afraid your PC is dying. I had to get rid of mine, i couldn't play anything (except really old games), no matter the graphics, tried plenty of fixes and none of them worked.

Tried this yet? My laptop died cause of overheating issues a few years ago, and now I know just to get a cheap one.

Definitely sounds like an overheating issue.

a can of air will do wonders with that job. However the size of laptops is one of it's biggest advantages/weaknesses. Not a lot of airflow for stuff to cool down or to get dust out.

A cooler doesn't do much. My current laptop was working great for over a year before heating issues and all the associated retardness started.
Then from the moment I had it cleaned it worked as smooth as when I bought it, it was awesome.

Just make sure you leave it with someone who knows what they're doing, unless you have easy access to the fan and can clean it directly.

Do NOT try to open it yourself, my laptop went into a coma after I tried to fix it, and gave me a fright.

Again, download HWmonitor, and report on your idle/gaming temperatures

I'm curious, really

I've had these symptoms twice.

The first was (as others have pointed out) a simple case of overheating. Screwdrivers + hose vacuum will fix it right up (have a little bowl on hand to store the screws, or you will lose some.

The second due to the hard drive failing, and is a flimsy pretext to upgrade my machine.

Laptops, especially gaming laptops (or regular laptops forced into slave labor as gaming laptops) are prone to overheating. Even high end models can get too hot to touch just from charging the battery and streaming video. Laptop coolers with fans don't really help much. Placing it on stone or metal tile can actually help more than an expensive laptop cooler accessory.

Be careful when you open it to remove dust. Air duster will clean out nooks and crannies without damaging the guts, but if it's still under warranty opening anything but the RAM/HD/disc drive slots may void it.

What are the specs on your laptop?

This is really interesting. But can I play on a Mac book pro overclocked ? :s
Ok. I need to wait a bit first. And work a bit...

Sorry for all I done during my crazyness. But please don't act like me.

I went through 2 different under laptop fans, they improved the survivability for a short while but i still could hardly play any games even with them on, I vacuumed it but still didnt help much

the last time i had any issues with my laptop one of my cores had apparently melted.  The laptop could run all programs just fine, but if i attempted to run any sort of game, the laptop after 15-30mins would drop in framerate, then suddenly crash altogether.  luckily the warranty covered it.

I noticed this as well--regardless of your laptops's specs, the bottleneck is heat sync. So, an easy, but expensive solution is

Step 1: Open freezer door
Step 2: Remove shelves, rearrange ice-cream, etc.
Step 3: Insert laptop

Boom! Standing desk + high-end cooling system.

Is this under load or idle? If it's idle, it's a bit high. Am talking about the Gateway IMV values, the CPU seems to be fine.

[Actually, no, it seems to be fine, since it's probably the GPU]

Did you record the values during gameplay or did you just let the computer sit there doing nothing?

If it was during gameplay, then it's not heat related. Those temps are good.
