Title: Single Player games
Post by: DaveUKR on February 19, 2014, 08:03:41 pm
Since I don't really have much time to play online games, I'd like to make a thread about games of different genres with solid and interesting SP (mostly not older than like 5-6 years old). Just post a title of the game and a little description. I'll start with several of them.

Max Payne 3: pretty much good shooter with a main character having midlife crisis :D If you played previous Max Payne games, you will most likely love it, though it lost it's charm.
Stanley Parable: original and interesting FP corridor walk-through with story line that you make on your own. Good 30-60 minutes of philosophical game.
Far Cry 3: good RPG shooter with a nice sandbox around. High quality product.
Sims 3: yeah, it's kinda gay, but trust me - this game can take you for a couple of hours at least.
Fallout: New Vegas: extremely good game (most of Fallout fans will like it). FP/3rd person RPG with semi-turn based fight mechanics (optional). Got a good scenario, you can play it a couple of times with completely different ways.

If you pass the first 2 or 3 hours of frustration , it's THE GAME.

Honestly I dont think it lost its charm, the players have changed, the game sticked to its own thing it started years ago. Im quite suprised Max Payne was so solid in the end. Considering the fact that games that are basically only shooters with no upgrade systems or anything almost burn instantly these days. Every game has a upgrade system or shop or something. Max Payne had balls for not sticking that shit in there and still coming out so strong. Very few games could pull such a thing off. It deserves stylepoints already just for that. Even fucking Tomb Raider has a upgradesystem now with the side of other stupid minigames such as hunting.

I don't have Last Light (yet), but Metro is definitely the best modern single player FPS out there. Not an amazing value though as I can't really find good reasons to replay it.

I also really like Far Cry 3, but I wouldn't call it an RPG. It's an open world FPS with excellent gunplay, essentially. If you like the gameplay, there's plenty of content to go through, much more than in Metro for example.

I personally would recommend Mafia 2, Dishonored, Antichamber, Binding of Isaac, FTL and all the Braid, FEZ, SMB, Limbo and other indie platformer things for a start.

Tomb Raider (the current one): Looks really good and I was surprised on how mature it actually became. On top you get very solid gameplay with a cool story. Certainly worth the money as a budget title by now. (Yes, there is a low profile upgrade system but it hardly has an real effect on the game - gamers choice if worth to put time in for mostly cosmetics :P)

Played some of them, would like to put my 2 cents.

Mafia 2: I found this game interesting, some characters are outstanding, good GTAish game with elements of sandbox. Loved the first Mafia too.
Dishonored: i'm not a fan of this style (atmosphere of mixed steam era + futurism + magic), but the game was decent. Some elements remind of Bioshock series (which are also quite good) and even Wolfenstein (the last one).

Dwarf Fortress, Creeper World 3, Prison Architect, Spacebase DF-9. You can waste a lot of time with these games.

Also, another vote for Antichamber.

Misery is significantly harder and more geared towards doing survival stuff and scavenging and stuff, it is very hard to progress in it (at least initially).

Overall, a very masochistic experience, imo.

Hey Dave, it's sad that you've got no time for online games anymore so I'd like to tell you my favourite sp games :)
1. If you have a console, go and buy Red Dead Redemption, this game is like GTA in western time, awesomeness itself! I actually played the whole game with every quest, not mainquests only) 3 times, 4rd time just mainstory and around 50 hours in MP (but seriously, SP is better(
I can highly recommend this game!!! So main story + other little stories for 1 time you finish it are aroubd 50-150 hours.
Second game I can recommend is: Hitman Absolution, get it while it's on sale, pretty funny for a couple of hours.
3rd: Crusader Kings 2 or Europa Universalis 4, both seem to be awesome games made by Paradox. I myself just own Crusader Kings 2 which is really funny. But Europa Universalis has almost the same, but Crusader Kings 2 is more based on characters and diplomacy, Europa Universalis is more based on factions and war.

Bulletstorm (http://store.steampowered.com/app/99810/), hilarious FPS, great voice acting, fun plot. Hugely recommended SP. Demo available on store page.
Fallout 1 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/38400/) + Fallout 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/38410/), best RPG games ever, can be replayed over and over and over again. Not 100% if the steam versions is the HD ones, else HD textures is available online.
Call of Juarez Gunslinger (http://store.steampowered.com/app/204450/), Innovative western FPS, superb voice acting (narration), very fun story and plot, incredible refreshing gameplay. The only minus is that it's a cel shading game. Demo available on store page.
Papers, Please (http://store.steampowered.com/app/239030/), it might look like nothing but this game is certainly not nothing, you'll end up spending a lot more hours than you thought.

Max Payne 3 was recommended in this thread already and I can only encourage you to try that as well, good solid FPS, feels like playing through a 'movie'.

but well i think mostly it was because i didnt like the strange GFX-style/design of the 3rd game because i played the 2 first and they were completely different "engine"wise

i did play it a little but FAR from how much i played 1 and 2! the first 2 titles were hex-based so you could edit every soldier and base and make it imba  FF FF FF FF 7F

I see. Well, all of them are best played in IRON MAN mode, meaning one save, and no reloading when something bad happens. Also play superhuman, and you lose soldiers in every mission. It's a lot of fun, though the ship missions in TFTD are hardcore this way. If you get one before you have at least second best armor, you probably won't bring home a single soldier.

Apocalypse is basically like the first two with a few new things. I agree, the art style is a bit strange, but it's cool that your men can go prone and even advance in prone. And later on, there is a lot of advanced stuff like cloaking devices and personal shields. Also, brain suckers and exploding blue pigs are the most annoying opponents you can imagine.

The only problem in Apocalypse is that if you are unlucky, you can get UFO invasions that are simply too hard to beat. It kind of sucks when you lose your whole interceptor fleet in one invasion.

Max Payne 1&2
Alan Wake

Even though my opinion may be considered biased since I'm a Finn(If you think this you're dumb. Much love.). I love Alan Wake and Max Payne. Yesterday I played through Max Payne 1 for the first time in 8 years. Awesome, then I played through Max Payne 2. What a fantastic end.

Now downloading the third. After 2's perfect ending, there's not reason for the third to exist, so it's gonna be bad. Gonna treat this as fanfic.

Can tell you that in 3,4 days when its out. Some say it´s good, some say it´s just okay; gotta check that out myself. Really loved the first 2 parts.

Btw, can anyone give me a tip about the witcher series? I never played a single witcher game, but the 3rd part looks amazing and I´ve only heard good stuff about the first two parts; I´m even thinking about reading the books first :I
Any recommendations?
Title: Re: Single Player games
Post by: Tot. on February 26, 2014, 02:38:48 pm
Recommendations regarding what exactly? Witcher 1 is rather overrated and almost skippable, Witcher 2 is really good, both of them take place after the events in the books so unless you read all of them or some recapitulation via wiki you won't have much idea what's going on or who the main character is. First two books are compilations of short stories so you should start there and decide if you want to read all of it later.

Title: Re: Single Player games
Post by: Bulzur on February 26, 2014, 02:48:38 pm
The books are really easy to read, there's not pages and pages of lore, and it feels pretty quick-paced. My local library had them all. You may feel taken aback, wondering what the hell happened in between some of the books, but that's just the style of the author, really focusing on some events, rather than a biography of the Witcher.
I did read them some years ago, but i remember having enjoyed them.

You don't need to read them to play the game, though you'll notice some more details if you have. And playing the game may answer some of the questions you had asked yourself when reading the book.

Overall, combat system is pretty easy, you just have to mix potions in a bit, and the difficulty is pretty decent. I used to always stock potions till the last boss, and wonder why i did, but in this case, i actually used them during the entire game. There's no "class" system though, and we all play the exact same character, with the exact same playstyle, so replayability is a big no from me, even if you'd want to see what would have happen had you side with another "faction". It would have been too repetitive.

Still, the main good point is... you're a witcher, all humans seem to hate you, all girls seem to want to have sex with you, and you definitely feel being a stronger being. Puny humans.
I hated the fact that i sometime had to run from point A to point B to point C to point A to point D, but if you enjoy the scenery and the scenario, then it's playable. Though Witcher 2 is definitely better than Witcher 1, in my opinion. If you have time, still play the first one, for the good story.

No I didn't. I just checked it. Frankly, I like the normal one more. Hardboiled detective noir is in my opinion better if the ending is not happy. My favourite endings provide redemption and hope for the protagonist, but they're not necessarily happy.

Shame the game keeps fucking interrupting me. Honestly, Max Payne 3 is just infuriating at least the first 2 hours. Of which maybe 30 minutes was actual gameplay.

Also, the games mood is nothing like the first 2 and the writing is clearly making an attempt at being good, but just falling short. The first two games were about Max Payne. So far you could replace Max Payne with Han Solo without making a dent to the plot.

That said, shooting is pretty fun. But it was always pretty fun.

"This place was like Baghdad with g-strings." Yeah....

Alan Wake

I couldn't finish it. I was on board up until the last chapter and just gave up out of lack of interest. Just got waaaay too fucking tedious to accomplish mind-numbingly retardedly simple things to progress the story. "Walk way the fuck over to this farm house and fight off super annoying hordes of shadow things and then, after a couple cut scenes, walk waaaay over to the next place." Ugh. Story wasn't good enough to warrant that abuse in order to finish it.
Title: Re: Single Player games

So many games come to mind ... I guess many people may not have played them so I would recommend Gothic 1, Gothic 2 notr and Gothic 3 which are all brilliant and one of my favorite RPG series ever. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are older games and when you start the first one you will probably get very confused about the controls but suffering through the initial confusion is worth it, even by modern standards they are still very much worth playing imo.

Also if you never played the Baldur gate series now would be a great time to try them out with the enhanced editions just recently released.

I can confidently recommend Soutpark: Stick of Truth to everyone who even only remotely likes the show!

It's freaking genius!

Two Worlds I and II are great games, way better rpgs than skyrim imo, and as a crpg player the graphics won't trouble you either.
Witcher I and II, and III once it comes out - it just has to be epic
Dragon Age I
And ofc Mass Effect 1-3, though the 2nd part is quite bad compared to the 3rd and especially to the first, but still a fairly good game.
I also can recommend playing Swtor, just doing your class specific quests - it's free to play and has an awesome storyline, so it's just like playing a SP game, though after that I got bored at it.

Also you should definitly play Dungeon Keeper 1&2 if you haven't done so yet.

Dragon Age I

That game made me fall asleep. How was this such a big hit when it came out? It's mediocre at best.

I'm not very picky but Cliché Age was too much.  :)

The first Dragon Age game was actually pretty good, maybe the genre just isnt your thing? Dunno.but I do know that they certainly fucked Dragon Age 2 up lol.

I'm not sure I like a good RPG with a good story etc, but Dragon Age was so.. bland or something

That just depends on your taste. I personally can't really play games with space/future sci-fi theme. Most of such games just annoy me. I could only play Dead Space (though it's a good game), the rest just annoys me mostly and I can't do anything with it.

oh THANK GOD I wasn´t the only one!
I got the game and I tried, I really tried TWICE to finish it, I got pretty far (I guess) but there was always one problem: I just couldn´t get myself into the game. For every game, you need some kind of immersion, some feeling that you´re part of the story. But every time when I was playing Dragon Age, I always, always knew that I was playing a video game, which sorta killed the story and everything around it. I don´t know why, it sure is a good game, but I enjoyed similar games like Baldurs Gate way more :I

also, for all the rpg lovers: try Arx Fatalis, loved that game

Yeah, large parts were pretty boring. It had good parts, too, though. Party member interaction was also pretty well done.

really good small game. And like I allways say, that system of drawing runes into air would perfectly fit with a combat system like M&B and I would die to see a SP RPG with both.

Arx Fatalis is an excellent spiritual continuation of the Ultima Underworld series.

I didn't actually care about Dragon Age's story elements all that much. Still much more than I usually do though, and I thought it was alright if not very original at all. I found the gameplay to be the main draw. It played pretty much exactly like a D&D based game and I absolutely love those. It even managed to have more "impact" to things. Combat felt more deadly than in say, Baldur's Gate. That might be due to the better graphics and sounds though.

Add Black & White 1 and 2 to this list. I like both of them very much for very different reasons. In my opinion the first is the best one, however they are too different to make any comparison really worthwhile.

I almost finished Thief. I'm a big fan of Thief series, the metal age was one of my favourite games. Oldmy old friends can cry about the new Thief, but from my perspective (I believe that I first played Thief more than 10 years ago) it's a good game that didn't give up traditions. There are a lot of technical problems, I really hate how the territory is handled by the engine (these windows...) but in overall it's a good game, 7/10.

A lot of people complained about the maps being too limited. Did you notice anything like that compared to old Thiefs?

I can't play Thief right now. My PC gets on full lock up when I try to enter my autosave at the start of Chapter 2. Only lowering the graphic settings to low allow me to load the level although my PC could handle it on max settings before just fine.
The 64 bit executable is bug for me as well with all time microstutters but running it on 32 bit works otherwise flawless.
On my Xbox 360 controller the button for running randomly activates itself without a button press which got me killed already several times.

I regret to have bought it this early and I won't play it until they've patched it properly.

I can not recommend the purchase of Thief at this moment.

Hitman: Absolution, replay it at difficulty hard atm, but you will be excited for atleast 10 hours at difficulty "normal" and other difficulties from 10 hours up to 100. (With replay in every difficulty you can spend over 50-150 hours!)

I couldn't recommend any series that a company decides to pull some necromancy on (although I heard Shadow Warrior was alright it still didn't look that great to me).

Don't get me wrong:

I liked a lot what I could play so far. It feels like Thief and plays like Thief. It's proper reboot if you take the time to disable all the casual-helpers...

I simply can't play it properly right now cuz it's buggy.

Oww... and if someone knows how I can get my hands on a proper C&C Generals version, lemme know please!

Games I recently played:

South Park: The stick of truth - funny turn-based RPG, would be excellent for South Park fans. If you hate SP - don't play it because it's a creepy RPG, the main purpose was to make a SP game, not the RPG I guess.

Fifa 14: horrible controls, pretty much unplayable on keyboards. Removed 3 hours after playing it, could be a good game with a controller.

Two Worlds: didn't launch lol :D

Spec Ops: The Line - 20 minutes of gameplay, didn't like playstationish gameplay.

Wargame: looks like a good strategy but too nerdish and not intuitional.

Orcs Must Die: cartoonish towerdefense, didn't like.

State of Decay: horrible graphics and strange gameplay, playable but once again: this playstationish gameplay...

State of Decay will give you many hours if you give it a chance.. I absolutely loved it! Breakdown that is, I love the constant survival and increasing difficulty, think I'm at level 13-14 or something.

This is my main survivor:

Edit: I played with controller, keyboard + mouse was not working when I bought it

I played for a couple of hours. But seriously, inventory with 8slots max is a joke. You need to go back to base and forth all the time. Also physics are bad, I don't feel any pleasure from driving. And house upgrades that require 30-90 minutes are too much for me.

Since there´s been some talkin about Stalker in this thread:
There´s a group which has been working on a mod for years now, calling it "lost alpha"-mod, it´s quite a biggun
http://www.moddb.com/mods/lost-alpha

After some shithead-tester leaked the unofficial version, they decided to release the mod on 26th of april, which is tomorrow
http://www.moddb.com/mods/lost-alpha/news/lost-alpha-update

I still can´t decide if I should play "misery" or "lost alpha", both seem to be really good D:
or just wait since I got red orchestra just yesterday, gosh I´m a spoiled prick

Oh, wow.

Well, it sounds far bigger than Misery is. Also, completely different.
If you haven't played Misery, give it a try. My guess is that you will be frustrated within a day and will give up on it, like i did.

Edit: Also just finished my almost annual replay of STALKER series with COMPLETE mods.

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Really good games overall; great visuals, sound, characters, dialogue, story, puzzles and combat. Recommended even if you're not that into Batman. Looking forward to Origins.

Origins is basically more of AC. Overall the same assets and looks. Story seemed to me a bit weaker than before. I am playing the story dlc "Cold cold heart" right now and it adds a few nice things although it seems that it's not integrated into the "standard world".

Still, all 3 are very recommendable games and not just for the fans.
