Yeah paste your CD-Key in Steam and you should have access to your original account.

As for the new copy, give it to a friend or use it for dual boxing (don't really )

Never used steam, does it still work if I just got steam now?

You can just enter your cd-key in steam, to get the game there. You don't need to buy it on steam.
