Strategus General Discussion / Time limit for Strategus battles
« on: July 23, 2011, 09:26:12 pm »
Quite a few of us participated in the epic Mercenaries vs. BRD battle this evening. While it was an interesting experience, I think everyone agrees that battles lasting 1h45m should be avoided. The reason the battle took so long was because it was beneficial for both sides to camp, so both sides just kept camping waiting for the other side to make a move. When battles last this long, people start missing appointments, it postpones other battles messing with the schedule, and in general it just becomes very drawn out. With bigger armies, the battles will only get longer.

I propose a maximum time limit of 55 minutes for Strategus battles. At the end of the 55 minutes, the attack is simply halted. Both armies remain in place with all their unused troops and gear intact. If the attacker wants to continue the assault, they must attack again.

: So let's see... you have a more accurate reticule, you can hold your reticule steady forever, your missiles fly straighter, your missiles are faster, you do more damage, you can wear more armor with less penalty, and you have plenty of skillpoints left so you can outrun people and do well in melee. Are you better at everything?

« on: July 13, 2011, 02:02:36 pm »
I am currently recruiting soldiers in a village with 5 gold visiting fee, but I am not being charged a visiting fee. I also have not paid a single gold in troop upkeep yet.

Suggestions Corner / Archery - Current state and proposed solution
« on: July 12, 2011, 01:50:04 pm »
Background:
The newest patch has changed archery significantly. It is now weaker, and in most experienced archers' views, less fun to play in public play. The background for the change was presumably to weaken archery in preparation for Strategus, to avoid as chadz called it, "another archer fest in Strategus". I present an alternative solution.

Assumptions:
  • Archery was not overpowered for public play prior to this patch. (Reference: On NA servers, there were 3 foot archers in the top 75 K:D players. Only one of these was pure archery: Loki on 75th place. >Source<)
  • Archery was too powerful in Strategus due to the nature of organized play, cheap loadout, map layout, and low amount of armor worn by all players.
Proposed solution:
  • For Strategus, allow only one type of arrow to be bought, let's for the sake of argument call them "Strategus Arrows":
    - Strategus Arrows are significantly more expensive than regular arrows, perhaps on the level of Bodkins. This makes the cost of a standard archer loadout for Strategus more in line with a melee unit. It would also make it very expensive to outfit archers with enough arrows to stand on a hill and spam all day long.
    - Strategus Arrows have a negative damage modifier. We know Warband allows this, as low end Native arrows have negative damage. The appropriate level would have to be discussed, but given the weak armor normally worn in Strategus, I don't think -5 damage would be terrible.
  • Given the above, revert archery to the state it was before this patch. Public balance should be back to where it was, where archery is enjoyable, but not dominant.

Comments?

Public play as used in this post refers to Battle and Siege, where most of us spend almost all of our play time.

Currently, when someone accepts a deal you have up on the marketplace, you receive a message from that person stating they have accepted your transaction. It would be very helpful if that message included details about which item was sold, and for how much. It would also be a definite plus if the message had a time stamp.

Sell/Trade / SOLD

I'm selling an heirloom point. Price: 450k. Character is ready to retire.

If you want me to loom an existing heirloom, I can put up 130k gold and a Courser as collateral. Wolves_Sarr can vouch for me.

These are my relevant current stats. I have 3 unassigned skill points that can be assigned as you wish.

Suggestions Corner / Rebalance the low-end level curve
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:09:49 pm »
Having recently brought in a number of new players and introduced them to cRPG, I've noticed they appear to be put off by the initial level curve. As a new player, without the gear and skillset of veterans, it's hard to make a meaningful impact in the early levels. This sucks the fun out of the game for many potential players, who would otherwise grow the player base for this fantastic mod.

While I appreciate the charm of starting as a peasant and working your way up, I believe the game would benefit from shortening this period somewhat.

Around level 20 there is a clear shift in power from peasant to useful soldier. Archers are able to wield the Strong Bow with ~125 wpf, meaning they actually hit roughly where they aim and can do proper damage. Shielders can wield decent shields and weapons. Cavalry can ride the majority of the horses and hold a lance. This is when a new player can typically expect to make a meaningful impact.

With the current leveling curve, assuming 2x multiplier on average, it takes 5 hours and 22 minutes to reach level 20 (6:21 to level 21). This is roughly the length of a short single player game, and many potential players will find this to be too long of a wait before they can truly contribute.

I propose the following:
Lower the xp curve such that a new player can expect to hit level 20 after roughly 2 hours. My opinion is that this will allow players to experience the "peasant life" for long enough, before they truly feel useful. This will reduce the total xp required to hit level 31 by roughly 3% -- an inconsequential amount. If desired, the XP can be added on towards the end of the level curve, keeping the time required to hit level 31 unchanged.

In terms of population on the servers, little will change. If we assume players on average play until ~32 before they retire (most retire at 31, but many play significantly longer), battlefields currently consist of ~3.6% "peasants" (People below level 20). After this change, ~1.6% will be "peasants". Either way, they make up a very small part of the battlefield, but will still be there.

In the end, I believe this change will significantly improve the initial impression new players have of cRPG, while having no or minimal impact on the game balance.

(I realize "Skip the fun" exists to allow players to test the waters, but I believe it is better for the game in general to have them play real characters they can get attached to and care about.)

Thoughts?
