Title: The Peloponessian League - ][ Hoplite and Skirmisher Alts and Mains Wanted! ][
Post by: Lorenzo_of_Iberia on December 20, 2011, 03:00:31 pm: The Peloponnessian League was in history the allied forces of Greek City States for two centuries.

To c-rpg it is a faction that all characters that are inspired by the armies of ancient Greece can unite under (I realise the faction 'Phalanx' was around but it seems to have died). The faction fights together in formation and as a single stoic unit.

To work together in the formation of a phalanx requires good communication and the ability to not only hold your ground but to protect the man on your left (300 got some things right :P). Of course I realise that due to the nature of this game producing a historically faithful phalanx is near impossible, however with a little experimentation and work I believe that we could make some dead hoplites proud :P

This is a faction open to mains and alts of players who are willing to play a strictly disciplined game and value teamwork over heroics. Characters should be able to play a useful role in the faction. Players are also required to be mature and respectful. Currently based in EU.

This is a faction that I predict will be mainly made of alts as I know that many players have their factions they already belong to (myself included) but if you feel like building an alt and joining that is just as good as only belonging to this faction.

Appearance

This can vary but keep with a hoplite theme, banner and look shown in spoiler below

- only round shields
- not too heavy armour (kuyaks look not hoplite like but a bit like a medieval hoplite might dress)
- strong helmet

Builds

For now the League is only looking for infantry builds in order to form the main phalanx. So here are some builds that the league requires to achieve its first objective.

Hoplite (Front Rank)

This Hoplite is capable at using a spear but is also adept at using the shorter swords, while keeping his body behind a strong shield. He must stand his ground whatever comes at him, relying on fellow hoplites from the front and back ranks to support him.

- High shield skill required
- Moderate polearm Proficiency
- Relatively high proficiency in one handed weapons

Suggested weapons :

- Heavy Round Shield
- War Spear
- short one handed blade designed for lightning fast strikes e.g. long dagger, falcion, scottish sword

Hoplite (Back Ranks)

This Hoplite supports the man in front of him using his high proficiency in polearms to prevent attackers getting close enough to reach the front ranks of the phalanx. He must be precise with his thrusts and be able to time them well.

- High Shield Skill
- High Polearm Proficiency

Suggested Weapons :

- Ash Pike (a fast and strong support spear that allows the use of a shield as well)
- Heavy Round or Huscarl Shield
- Long Dagger (for desperate cases as the ash pike is near useless in close quarters)

Peltast

These Light Infantry are designed to add some flexibility to the phalanx, though they are not strictly related to the phalanx of 600 bce they were later adopted by the Macedonian armies of Phillip II. They will give the phalanx protection at the flanks while being able to harass opponents before contact.

- Some Shield Skill
- Good proficiency in 1 handed weapons
- good athletics
- Throwing capabilites (to javelin standards at least)

Suggested weapons :

- Elite Cavalry or Round Cavalry Shield
- Javelins
- Light 1h swords and axes

Tag

The tag for the league will be :

PL (e.g. PL_Hoplitai_Lorenzo)

Also maybe later on the actual role you play in the league can be introduced into the tag but for now PL will do.

But one question: I know you're trying to be historically correct, but wouldn't be an idea to have the peltast like the rest of the infantry (In terms of armor), so that the only difference would be the throwing? I think having hoplites with throwing weapons and swords makes the formation much more versatile.

Ye these are just rough ideas, my hoplite actually throws as well so i sorta broke my own suggestions :P Its something that needs to be tested and is as much on the table as the suggested ideas, I just thought I'd start with history as thats as good a basis as any ;)

I realise its hard but might be worth a go, I always wanted to see if it could happen with the right player base ;)

Come the new year I will post in here a date and time suggestion for a general muck around and see who can make it :) After a decided date and time is produced we can meet up and try this whole thing out and see if we can gain some notoriety ;)

Just put the PL tag in front of the alts names and watch out for the post on here come the new year :)

So i suggest the second row could use a Awlpike or Double sided lance or something like that,so we could reach for the javelins without dropping the pike.If we use the double sided lance we could not use the Long Dagger.

This is just my opinion.

Yea i gave that a test , but the lack of piece hindered slightly, maybe with a str build it would be better :/

The thebans never 'conquered' the greek city states like the Macedonians :P

Also the league would have to seperate and fight between two halves before Thebes even came in and did anything.

the thebans did liberate messenia and broke the back of the Peloponesian league, who were allied after the corinthian war. Without the Helots supporting the professional armies of sparta, the resistance against philip rested on the Citizen militia of Athens and Thebes, with a small contingent of sacred band professionals. We all know how that turned out.

You realize that it was Epaminondas that revolutionized military tactics and strategy that allowed philip to engineer his macedonian war machine. Without thebes, there would be no Philip, and no Alexander.

I looked some stuff up (as this is an era I havnt ever known much about) and it reads that Philip apparently was captured by thebes and there is a possibility that he was inspired by the military tactics and strategies of thebes. So I agree maybe Thebes helped create Macedon :)

If you want a good continual story of this period, you should check out "Hellenica" by Xenophon. Though i'd suggest you read the Histories by Thucydides first, since the Hellenica starts off exactly where Thucydides left off.

Fru fru :P The SOP works well for GK, but for a formation of spears its too loose I feel ;)

And as for the equipment I am already using the barbutte and huscarl shield but I had never considered the mail, that I imagine would look awesome ;)

I often play as hoplite /anti Cav works well for me although i suggest the elite Cavalary Shield because its lighting fast and got ok shieldwidth and I think Warspear is such the best in INF meele

We need more hoplites to complete our phalanx, our flanks are a little vulnerable so still a lot of work to be done. Additionally we need light skirmishers to help us out, these being 1h/shield agility builds with throwing weapons to skirmish around the main shield wall, if that build sounds like fun make an alt and join the League ;)

Post by: Lorenzo_of_Iberia on January 23, 2012, 03:44:12 pm: Ok I am glad to report that we have a really decent amount of skilled players :D Those of you who have been present during some of our sessions have seen that though we are relatively inexperienced, we actually have been pulling off some really nice teamplay.

This brings me to think that while we have a good amount of shields in our ranks, we need a supporting group to lay behind the shield wall. I would really like to see any players that are interested to consider a second position in the phalanx... The Peltast.

The Peltast is a skirmishing player capable of close quarters combat. Here are the specifications if any players considering joining us would like to be a peltast rather than a hoplite :

- Ability to use a 1 slot shield of relatively decent strength (elite cavalry shield would work)
- Ability to fight in hand to hand melee with fast 1 slots weapons (scottish dirk, falchions, maces, axes, shortened spear)
- Throwing skills, not high but enough to throw into approaching formations with some accuracy (around pt4 with 70-100 (maybe more) wpf in throwing
- High athletics build for fast movement behind the main line
- Lighter armour than the hoplites (recommended = byrnja, leather boots, leather glove, spiked cap)

Please if you are 50/50 on trying the league out then join us for one play session and then you can make an informed decision. This clan is a no commitment for fun faction and we are never gonna hold it against you if its not your thing.

So join with your hoplites and join with your peltasts! For the League ;)

P.s. there will hopefully be another play session at some point this week, when a lot of players are on so be ready to be asked if you want in if you are part of the steam group :D

This was the first time we had a decent amount of us and though we looked quite awesome, I need to start thinking about how we are gonna get some cohesion during movement and when forming more than a basic shield wall ;)
