Title: Low-res texture pack
Post by: Ozin on May 12, 2011, 02:37:21 pm
This is an attempt to lower the chance of crashes and freezes that some players have experienced after the 0.220 patch. I have basically lowered all textures to use a maximum 512 pixels in each axis, effectively lowering the textures folder from 249mb to 79mb. This seems to have solved it for me the first few rounds I have tested it, but it is too early to say for sure. I see no harm in letting you test it as well though, as it only changes the textures.

Updated for cRPG 0.223 - should work with future versions as well, but won't replace any new textures that get added until I update again.

Install: Just extract Textures folder from the zip into your cRPG folder. Say yes when it asks to overwrite.

Download:
http://www.mbrepository.com/file.php?id=2878

All feedback on your results is very welcome!

Agree. My graphic cards require more meats.

Also just a side note, and this is as good of a place as any to post it, though I'll put a post in suggestions as well.

I require a optional more blood mode, like when i hit someone in the head 2 liters of blood spray a good distance, or if I cut someone and they run away they leave a trail of blood that is psychically impossible in real life. And last but not least I need to hear a good death gargle sound from my victims.

Thanks

I greatly appreciate this pack. My computer is pretty decent, but it's been having severe overheating problems when it has to use any of its GPU/CPU problems. I will try it out later tonight.

After i have installed  this pack, I'm quite sure   the details of characters   are better than before  :!: :?: ,( armors-shields colors and shapes  more clear-sharp)    i'm running the game  on lowest settings using dx7 (was doing the same before) ,it's weird.  Anyway thx for this pack, i have to test it in big battles.

At last I got the damned crash again, I guess it was inevitable. It does lower the amount of memory which warband uses though, and helps delay the crashes after reboot. If not perfect results, at least it helps me a little, so was worth the effort  :)

I think you can change the blood in the module file.

The  game seems more "smooth" and "fluid" with low-res texture pack, i don't understand  why  banners on armors-shields are more detailed now than before.
I hope you are  gonna make a low-res texture pack also for the future patches
Keep up the good work!!! 8-)

Perhaps photoshop is doing a better job of resizing/compressing the textures than warband if you played with reduced texture quality before..

Downloaded the pack 2 days ago, and I haven't experienced any more random stutters and haven't had any more crashes (yet). Best of all is that the new textures look just as good as the old ones IMO.

Thanks for the textures, it seems that they helped for me, lag is gone and I'm able to play this mod again without losing my nerves. Though if I try to use 100% texture details, even with these lower detail textures, i'm getting freezes. 75% texture detail seems to work fine. Well, maybe I should update my computer.

Re-download the patch. Delete your cRPG folder and install again. Don't overwrite. I think you have a different problem.

Thank you!!!
I had like one or two crashes a day before and with this pack 0 crashes in 48 hours so far.
Main interest for me is for my VGA, its cooler by 5-7 degrees and the games textures still look good, game even seem more fluid.
You made my day thanks mate

hmm, forgot about the banner pack being included (and  resized as well heh). You could just not extract the banner files when overwriting your texture folder. Or delete them from the texture folder.

Similarly, if you want full res banner pack, just download banner pack again and replace.

I thought the problems were todo with textures so i downloaded it, worked for a while then it started again so I did a fresh install and put the more metal sounds mod on and it started again so i did another fresh install all fine. Do you have the more metal mod installed cos i think this is the problem with mine.

No, I don't have that. In my case, the low res texture pack just delays the freezes after rebooting. It does smooth my game though.

As a further try to eliminate those damn crashes, I will look into at least removing the new head models/textures and see if that solves anything. Stay tuned.

Hey!

I got an ATi 6950 @ 6750 with 2 GB VRam. I dont think its a problem with the Textures.
The freezes started last patch. 0.221 i think. With 0.223 they got a bit less.
But i have to restart on some maps very often. Mostly on some Siege-Maps.

Been using this few a while and I can say it eliminates the strange lag spikes I experienced before. The downside is that it makes chainmail (particularly druzhina armors and the armors which are nearly ALL chainmail like mail shirt and mail hauberk) look a little blurry at medium to far distances. No noticable differences to other armors though.

Will it change the looks of everything?

The mipmaps (texture LODS) haven't been created for the textures, that's why they look detailed. Also, that's why the textures lack any aliasing at a distance and look really glitchy.

Someone should make some mipmaps for them, then they would look much better and be even faster than these.

Bump!

How did you do it? struggling here but going the gimp route now..

ok now finally batch converting dds to dds with nconvert for DOS... will test when its done.

ok works! upload a bit later..

ok here is the relatively untested 25% texture pack. It's extremely brutal, so every texture in the texture folder is now 25% of its height and width, even the loading screens :)

Only tested it in DX7 and with few players on, but it seemed to me fps and gameplay was faster and smoother than normal!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/486399/Textures.rar (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/486399/Textures.rar)

Just replace all the files in the texture folder.

it's not enough brutal, you forgot about Native\textures folder. There are about 60% of all textures for weapons\armors\buildings etc...
