Title: [Updated Nov 12th 2015] Tears of Destiny's General Guide For New Players
Post by: Tears of Destiny on June 29, 2011, 12:54:33 am
Tears of Destiny's General Guide For New Players (http://forum.c-rpg.net/index.php/topic,9245.0.html)

This guide is primarily intended to help new players, and thus is more then likely useless for more experienced players. I will update this as needed. If you see anything that is wrong, tell me so I can fix it or ignore you.

After fighting your first few battles and being gloriously slaughtered at every turn, you may have questions or frustrations, so read on to gain a better grasp on how this game works as well as any tips on the hidden etiquette. I do not expect you to read all of this, merely just the parts that you are interested or lost on.

DISCLAIMER: This was written from NA perspectives first and foremost, so read and evaluate accordingly.
EDIT: This is Rico. I am updating the thread in Tears of Destiny's stead because it has not been updated in a while, and he is inactive. I made a backup (http://forum.melee.org/general-off-topic/tears-of-destiny's-general-guide-for-new-players-%28backup-from-december-27-2011%29/msg1181304/#msg1181304) of the original thread. Since I am from EU, you should now get a perspective from both regions.

Sections:
1.) Etiquette, tips and expected behavior.
2.) Your Character Page, making new characters, the market etc.
3.) How to obtain top tier gear and not go broke.
4.) Equipment.
5.) Classes.
6.) Game Modes and Gameplay.
7.) Clans.
8.) Strategus.
9.) Weather.
I.). Common abbreviations and jargon.
II.) Experienced Players you can ask for advice
III.) How this forum works.
IV.) Useful pages to browse when bored.

TL;DR since i've read plenty of newbie guides and know my way around the game by now, but it looks very thought-through and it's really nice hat people take time to write well-written guides for beginners... it will hopefully result in more people staying long enough to actually experience everything cRPG has to offer.

+1

Edit: you are lucky i had to correct a minor error, otherwise i would have ended up posting before your 'reserved' :p
hope you weren't planning on using this post too

Love it, you planning on doing something in this format for Strategus? I.E. more in depth, and more detail? I like how it's laid out.

No problem, heh. See Section I, third post. I will add to it continually but slowly.

Added, thank you.

I would be interested in doing a similar guide for Strategus, yes.  :D

Anywho, thank you all for reading this. I apologize if there is any incorrect information or mistakes, and I will do my best to fix it if brought to my attention. I will add more later on, but for today I will relax.

Thank you for your time, I hope this helps, or at the very least amuses, at least one person.

A very good start. Out of the tons of things to add, I chose one :

"Duel
These are never hooked up fully to the data base, thus while you will be able to use what your character owns as well as having your proper stats, you will not gain any gold, you will not gain any experience, and you will not suffer any upkeep.

The point of a Duel server is to practice one on one with someone. Some builds may work better in battle then in duels, and vice versa, but regardless it is a good way to practice.  Walk up to someone and press the “f” key to challenge them or to accept a challenge.

Remember not to "facehug" (see jargon section) your opponent (have a safe distance) when then duel starts. Most of the time, people come to the duel server for melee duels, and usually without shields. Stating when you want to use a ranged weapon is better. If you come with a horse, it is best to kill it when you don't use it anymore, as stray horses can bump everyone. For cav duels, try not to fight too close of infantry duels. You will block yourself and other duellers. Finally, many people consider that hitting someone knocked down in duel is a bad and despicable habit. In a more general way, try to stay as polite as possible. Rage is always badly seen, but it is even more true in duel, as you should behave like a gentleman. Consider duel servers as 5 star hotel casinos, and you'll be fine."

You may also consider adding a section listing experienced players that new players can PM for advice regarding gear, builds, tactics, or other topics that may require further elaboration.

I would be willing to offer my advice on any subject related to infantry and melee.

Added Section 0
Read it to fix your game.

EDIT: Heavy modification to Section 0.

Alrighty, double posting not editing so people notice, but Section 0 now works for sure if you follow the updated steps exactly.

I will modify and update the guide more some other day when I am not irritated at Steam...

Re-worded guide, sorry.

I listed it as "buggy" as for a solution it does have a few small bugs, such as a slightly closer camera view, when compared to the alternative but much more time-consuming fix.

Again, re-worded.

But as a solution, it is buggy. :)

I could re-word it letting people know that specifically, it will still carry forward the patch bugs, if you wish.

Oh, and +1 for coming up with the alternative solution.

Oh, and +1 for coming up with the alternative solution.

My game looks smoother anyway, the only thing is this camera, which behaves like in Fire and Sword.
Somehow I feel the game smoother,but maybe only Placebo effect.
Yes please, mention the camera problem, its slightly closer, nightmare for horselancers,
but  if you can get used to it while taleworlds fixes it, then its the best solution.
Nobody reported crash because of this. And its very easy both to apply and to undo!
So still you can try the other way. First try this! If ok, then use it.

The point is, that it makes the smallest mess with your system.

Work in progress :p

Fixing the steam issue amongst a few other things has delayed me editing the classes page in all honesty. I may go about it a different way and be very general.

Additionally, the point is that if you make the quick method, you don't have to disable Steam auto-update on Warband,

and you will have the fix as soon as it released, you don't have to bother anymore about this thing!
When the official fixed cRPG is out, you upgrade it in the same way, as ever.
The cause, which prevented joining was in cRPG.
The wrong female-male models are fixed already (tw reported, I didn't check it)

That would be rather pointless, as heirloom price increases don't raise the upkeep. But they still change the order in which your equipment is listed in the ingame equipment menu and the total equipment cost showed on the site, though.

Very good guide !

I'd add (if you don't mind) to remind people to explain why they are about to do a poll, not doing so might result you being kicked/banned as it is an important rules in many servers...

Also, if you're connected to a server that is almost full, join a team .. as we try to have as many people as possible playing so everyine is enjoying the game. It sucks when you can't connect to a server because it's passworded, and it's passworded because there are 10 AFK spectators or people just spectating :P

But these are just minors additions , for the rest I was pretty impressive, keep the good work man !

Yo, add me to Section II, and I'd recommend adding a little more about the iChat and how useful it is to report someone breaking a rule to an admin instantly so we can deal with it right away...if there are any admins on, of course. ( Re-reading that makes it sound confusing, but you're better than me with words, so if you add it make it sound spiffy! :D )

Add something along these lines:

It needs to be underlined that cRPG is not primarily about levelling your character but your own skill.
I have been playing for almost a year of warband (some 850 hours) around 9 months of cRPG. I can hardly call myself average but that is because I'm a sucker at action games.

What people need to understand is that when Georges run around with his spamberge and plate, it is not the equipment doing the kills. We see lots of failed clones. The guy (strange as it may be) actually knows how to play. I use him becuase he is a good example. New players think that they can go to level 30 buy the expensive equipment and start chopping the enemy. That is not the case.

Jorm and Bifi from my clan make more kills at lvl 23 that I do at 30 (almost...). They know how to block 95% of the attacks... I get 65% on a good day. I make a decent faint every fourth time, they make it every other. I chamber by luck, they do it on purpose.
When you start to realize this, you will find it far more fun to level your own s(kill) and not your characters.

Will update again on Monday. Until then...

1. Click 'you must update your login'
2. Pick one of your characters and enter their password (I used my main)
3. Choose a site account and password (you will use this to log in with from now on)
4. Click done
5. Log in
6. Pick one of your characters from the list
7. If they don't show up, wait a few minutes, clear your cookies, refresh, try again.

I will start updating this Guide once at least 5 day have passed without a hotfix or a website update.

I used to be on the Content Staff for the twcenter.net wiki and I am extremely tired of coding stuff into any wiki, anywhere, and make it look nice.

If anyone wants to replicate this on the wiki, be my guest.

Good suggestion though.

If you put your content into the wiki, someone could easily clean it up for you, at least thats what I'm planning on! haha.  I was bored and hate the lack of documentation for new players in cRPG, so I started messing around on the crpg wiki.  You would be a valuable ally!

You, me, waltf4, that that eliosomething guy that does some badass info posts

Right, all current information has been updated to the latest patch besides the specifics of upkeep. If anyone can give me the exact numbers (or at least the rough numbers) of upkeep that would be fantastic as the 4% chance per tick of 5% item price no longer applies. Even a rough ballpark figure (Example: Less then 3% chance at 7% upkeep) would be great.

Also added a bit more information to other areas. Once again, feel free to point out errors.

Next afternoon I should be able to finish the "Classes" part as I figured out how to write it up.

If anyone has specific details about strategus I would greatly appreciate it to help flesh out the strat part.

Click on Skip the fun for details, but be warned that you are only allowed one STF character at a time, and it has a 7 week cooldown before you are allowed to make another. It is important to realize that once a character is made into an STF it can not be respeced, and is an STF until deleted. Remember that characters created using the “skip the fun” feature will not be able to use the market place even if it is set as your main character.

hi tears, your guide is awesome!! but you have made one mistake!! (ok maybe more but I just founded one...)

the STF cooldown is 7 days/1 week not 7 weeks!

Hope you'll finish it soon!

I don't want to make a new thread for such a simple(and maybe a little bit stupid) question, so I'll just post it here. (if it's wrong, then tell me, and I'll move)
Some weapons in one handed section have "second mode". It means, that I can use them as two-handed, right? If yes, then I'll use them "well" if I have high 2h proficiency, right? I know it might be a stupid question, but I want to be 100% sure.
I'm making an archer character with 2h as secondary weapon, and I'm a little bit disappointed with mace. It's not bad weapon, but have small range, what sometimes is a bit annoying. so I though, that I might switch to "military sickle" or "fighting axe" and use it's secondary mode. (because they use 1 slot)
What do you think about it?
Title: Re: Tears of Destiny's General Guide For New Players
Post by: Rhaelys on August 14, 2011, 11:13:27 pm
You are correct. The Military Sickle, Fighting Axe, Langes Messer, and Mace are the most popular 1-slot two-hand-style melee weapons for archers and crossbowmen.

Post by: Askorti on August 18, 2011, 06:33:39 pm
OK, another rather simple(I think) question. what does it mean, that a weapon take "0 slots"? And how can I use them with 4 other things?
As for now, I'm a bit disappointed with my archer character, so I though, that I might to try play as a peltast (light thrower). That 0 slots thing came to my attention, when I was looking at amount of ammo in thrown weapon. Can I take 4 bags of javelins and some knife(which take 0 slots) to that too?

Your character has four boxes and four slots.
Every item on the right side used for weapons/ladders/etcuses exactly one box. However, items also take up 0-3 slots as well.
My archer for example uses a warbow (1 box 2 slots), and two arrows (each 1 slot one box). This leaves me with a box left but no slots, so I can use a 0 slot hammer for example to fill the remaining box.

For the other responses:
I shall look into it and consider help!
I should really finish this guide, there is only a wee tiny bit left to do anyways, heh.

Also, I had no idea you were into stuff like that Panoply, we should hang out. <3

Hmm, I may need to update the guide for that. I think it is now on your character stat page on the very bottom, try there to set your Main.

I have set my main already, but my role is still undefined. Perhaps I need to level more.

I noticed that Panos is now Panos  :lol:

I'll add that to the list, as well as any others that i can think of. Anyone else thinking of terms, feel free to post them if they are commonly used.

Will do a heavy rework again soon, addressing the new character page and a much larger list of very useful threads. If someone wants to compile a proper description of rageball that I can copy and paste (similar to my other described game modes) then I would be overjoyed and promise not to shitpost in any of your threads (think of how rare a treasure that is).

Despite you writing it is a 'rough' estimate perhaps add the following to the 'amount of reach added to weapon length due to animation' section for clarification?

Data on 1h and 2h should be somewhat accurate, when I got to polearms I just wanted to get done faster so they may be off a cm or two.

And (in red),

Standard = Onehand overhead (+0)

1h
Overhead = +0
Left-to-right = +0
Right-to-left = +19
Thrust = +61

2h
Overhead = +15
Left-to-right = +17
Right-to-left = +13
Thrust = +80

2h Polearms
Overhead = -15
Left-to-right = -7
Right-to-left = -2
Thrust = +19

1h Polearms
Thrust = +50

*DISCLAIMER*
This test was done against a dummy, with modified weapon lenghts. Margin of error is probably around +/-3. For your information, testing this with no information about the reaches took a lot of time. If you want more accurate results you'll have to do it by yourself.

edit:
Or perhaps just update it with this one http://forum.c-rpg.net/index.php/topic,25086.0.html

Hey Tears, if you could, add STF = Skip the Fun to the Common Abbreviations section of the Guide.  I remember seeing it for the first time, and having no clue.

And thanks... the guide is very helpful!

An acronym being spouted in Battle(not directly at me): "dsl".
I decided to look it up on Urban Dictionary and all that taught me was that it stood for "d**k sucking lips". May I assume dsl is somewhat more game related?

Perhaps this kind of info is here in the guide but I could not find it:

I was in a siege battle last night and people were referring to "Battalion Two" and hitting PP to see it.  At first I had no idea what they were talking about.  Then I was able to see the marker showing were the flag was located.

I'm just wondering what other kind of keystrokes/functions there are that I'm not aware of.  Perhaps could be a good addition to the guide if it's not already there.

After finals I'll give the guide an overhaul, was mainly waiting for the website layout to stabilize and it finally did.

Due to the marvelous Game Mechanic thread, my guide will be more conceptual and less "hard numbers." No need to say the same thing twice.

Thank you all oh so kindly for your help!

@Tears

Heya)

Thanks for your great guide, it helped me a lot when I was new))) Please consider adding the teamspeak adress of Peasants United to the section called "II.) Experienced Players you can ask for advice". Peasants United is a clan for new players, the members are either beginners or trainers to help them to get good at cRPG.

Here it is:
teamspeak adress (Nditions > cRPG EU clans > PEASANTS UNITED): 62.104.20.250:10027

Thank you ^_^

thanks rico, thanks for idling in that ts adress. for the moment i am kind of inactive on ts, but we also have a IRC chat group wich works pretty good atm.

http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=peasantsunited

atm we have enough people to idle during the day, but as the NA base of trainers is rather small, we dont have any trainers online at night atm. it will change i hope

Good people, why in the name of hell I'm using a share account? I created an account. actually, it was already created but the game told me to log into that account called "Fallen_Reaktor" . Everyday somebody is creating a new character on the same account. That account is MINE or is a share account who is using it a lot of players? I change the password for nothing, the next day is a new one. And why "Fallen_Reaktor" ? I didn't choose this or use it.

I have a few questions, but don't want to start a new thread:
1. How do I keep improving after hitting a wall? It seems like I've learned what I could, and now can occasionally block an attack, and rarely chamber one. I try to play as much as I can, but I'm not getting any better, still quite shitey. I've never received any valour either. It seems like the biggest problem to me is the well-equipped players who one-hit me and I don't do any damage to them, I just can't really learn anything without a chance to actually learn. I thought about training in single player, but even the most difficult AI is predictable, unlike players.
2. How do I get good equipment while still earning good gold? Farming with cheap gear is less fun than already losing every fight, and using good gear only occasionally, when I can afford to upkeep it sounds even less fun.
3. Is there any way to turn Strat silver to cRPG gold? I don't really play Strategus as it's confusing to me, and have over 1k silver that I have no use for.
Seems like every other player is constantly getting better while I remain the noob I was  :(

A good way to get better is to go on the duel server and just fight people. You'll lose like 1000 times and then the 1001st duel you'll perform slightly better. Then you do a 1000 more and you'll get slightly better. Eventually you'll be doing slightly okay. To make good gold, get on EU or NA DTV when they are populated(like 10+). On the later waves you'll be making ~3k gold a pop. Join NA or EU ones regardless of ping, if you work well with your team you can easily still perform well with 100+ ping. Unfortunately for strategus, you cant change silver to gold and 1000 silver is actually very little. If you want to get into Strategus, try applying for one of the factions and asking them to teach you. If you are NA you can join the strat faction I'm in, and if not you can always message me(Tristan_of_Erzoth) either on the forums, in game if you see me, or on steam(profile is in my forum sig).
