Title: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Vibe on January 25, 2012, 09:22:52 am
Well the more I read about this game the more I'm hyped.

I simply love the fact that they're "breaking" so many of the rules set by nowadays "MMO" games like WoW, RIFT, SWToR and co.

Why did I write "MMO"? Because simply said those names that I mentioned are anything but a MULTI MASSIVE ONLINE game. Actually the last thing "massive" in WoW was pre-battlemaster vanilla PvP battles in Hillsbrad Foothills.

From there it just went down to cross-server LFD tools and other bad stuff like that, that completely broke server communities. Nowadays so called big "MMOs" are nothing but instantiated content exclusively for your guild where other random players (read server) have no influence, neither do you have any influence on the server.

Guild Wars 2 kind of breaks this era of "MMO" games by releasing a real MMO and Dynamic Events are what makes that possible. It's no more about solo questing, you encounter different events throughout your journey which are NOT exclusive to you (or your party). These are the GW2s "quests" that anyone can join in. What others and you do in these events makes an impact on how the event will end and how the world/area will be influenced.

The game is no more about getting to max level, getting a good guild and gear grind till your eyes pop out of sockets. It's about cooperating with your whole server, not just a small group of players. Yes, GW2 still has instanced 5man dungeons, but that is a small part of the game.

In addition to this, you have World vs World vs World PvP (3 servers), which makes a server's community matter even more.

Other than these dynamic events that really bring the feel of a real MMO, you have this:

- no more tank/heal/dps classes (aka the trinity)
- no more normal talk to npc quests
- no more gear grind (stats may be different but the "item level" is the same for everyone of the same level)
- bigass PvP zone with dynamic events, castles, resource points, mines, fortresses where 3 servers fight eachother
- dynamic combat with active blocking, projectile dodging, skill combos and cast on run
- ability to level exclusively in PvP from level 1 (you're boosted to 80 with gear and skills so you're not gimped)
- ability sets dependant on what type of weapon you're using
- a sidekick system that boosts/lowers your character to your friends level so you can play with him
- a character story system where your choices matter
- ability to switch servers without a cost
- buy to play!

That being said, here's a megalong überpost about GW2, that pretty much has all the info about it:
http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1058358-Guild-Wars-2-Mass-info-for-the-uninitiated.-READ-ME!

Also:
Quote
We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.

Good to see people here will play it.

It's one of the few online games I'm waiting patiently for.

GW2 is part of those MMO's I'm interested in. I really liked GW1 and I know this one will be completely different, obviously in a good way. And I still love the buy to play model.

However, there are a few things I think are a little too much arcadey like :

- no more gear grind (stats may be different but the "item level" is the same for everyone of the same level)
- ability to level exclusively in PvP from level 1 (you're boosted to 80 with gear and skills so you're not gimped)
- a sidekick system that boosts/lowers your character to your friends level so you can play with him

I'm ok with getting the gameplay over the point & click level, but throwing the grind out of the window is not a good idea :(

Finally, I don't know how they will come up with an interesting system without the usual tank/heal/dps classes. GW1 already was a bit of an outsider about that since you could actually play in group without a heal and/or without a tank, but still the balance wasn't perfect tbh.

About a "revolution" in MMO, it isn't really true either. Many 2nd tier MMOs, usually F2P, tried various forms of innovative ideas on that regard. Including massive faction battles etc. But a good part of those died due to a lack of players. People play because other people play too, with little regard to the quality of the game. WoW, with all the successive extensions that only managed to make it worse, is a very good example of this. Only very recently the player count started to drop afaik.

They're not completely omitting the grind. You may sidekick and you may get bolstered to certain level and gear, but you'll still look like a lowbie. And I believe in World PvP you won't have all the skills/perks until you hit lvl 80, so you're a bit gimped till you hit max level.

Anyway, I too love that they're reducing the grind or atleast hiding it, making this a game that is about playing for fun, not playing because you need to level or get better gear. That's what I really like about it.

You haven't played GW. It's all about builds, there's almost no grind. And you can change your build as many times as you want to, something that's not possible in smelly c-rpg Q_Q

Why you Pecores folks like grind so much?

GW1 had a cap of 20 and you could reach it in 2-3 days.

Levels was not the focus of the game it was the pvp and the story.

Some games provide you with lots to do during the leveling then you have barely anything to do at cap and there's games like guildwars that the first levels are just prologue of the game.

Alot of these "new" features were in warhammer already. Awesome game ruined by shitty server stability and lag. Im gonna buy this one just cause you can lvl up with pvp from lvl 1 just like in warhammer. Cant stand pve

same, im looking forward to gw2. but in many ways it wont be as good as gw1, they have scrapped alot of gw's best inovations, like the skill system for a standard classes. gw1 wasn't a proper mmo but it was still better than most mmos, gw2 will actually be more like wow etc, but still I trust it will be worth playing.

I'm getting a lot of flak here

Actually, I genuinely enjoy the grind, and I admit it. Acheiving things is a natural part of happiness, and the patience/effort needed only makes it more satisfying to reach. I know this is completely meaningless and sort of weird to impose yourself difficulties in order to be more happy when you surpass them, but playing as a whole is just as useless from that perspective.

Also, in GW the levels were only the tutorial. The real grind was about getting skills and weapon upgrades, and I didn't really liked it honestly. It felt sort of too random, as in, you're lucky or you're not. If prefer games where the leveling is ultra slow but at least you can do it ad infinitum (usually because high levels end up taking years). You stop when you're bored.

Enjoy your korean grindfest with a cash shop!

Typical. The number of times I heard this nonsense is uncountable. Nobody forces you to pay, and nobody needs the cash shop items to play. If it isn't the case for you, your mind is simply too weak to resist. Buying "bonuses" usually only spoils your fun because everything is faster and you don't enjoy the full length of it.

Necro was always my favourite:

Bone minions + putrid explosion

Either that or ranger.

Looks like there's going to be an open beta in a couple of months to.

Well, you had to "grind" to unlock most of the skills.

possibilities were endless with gw, thats why it was so fun. and for pvp there was zero level/gear grind, it was all free. there was some grind to unlock skills but it was minimal.

you could use your own teamates as zombies, ress them with monk upkeep spell, cast necro spells on them and then detonate them by stopping the upkeep and therefor killing them again.

About the dynamic events thingy:
First RIFT introduced this feature in MMORPG games.I played RIFT and i can say it is one of the best things a MMORPG can have !
RIFT community was shit tho , i didn't enjoy it but in GW 2 it is different, quests are related to events in RIFT dynamic events were bonus occasions.

(click to show/hide)
About ARENANET and GW 2 all i can say it is brilliant.
I've read lots of articles from devs about GW 2 they are so fukken logical.

They said " We added a downed state,if your hp bar runs out , you get into downed state on this state you have few skills like throwing your blade or throw sand on your enemies eyes this is where you make your last stand before you die your skills of downed state differs by your class . If you can kill your enemies on downed state , you can recover from it and get back to normal , if any other player helps you to kill them you can recover , if you fail to kill enemies when the time runs out you go into defeated state on this state ANY player in the map can ressurrect you if no one around you can just choose a spawn point from checkpoints you discover from map.We are not giving any negative effects to recently dead players. We made this game for you to play and enjoy why would we put a limit on how you play this game ? You don't lose portion of your experience point or gold , you don't get a negative buff to reduce your abilities and stats , you don't have to run into the place you died as a ghost to revive we don't want you to waste your time on doing that play the game instead !"
This summary i made is actually the summary of whole game and Arenanet's plan.
They worked hard on this game and they want it to be played.
They removed healer class to make people independent to 1 guy in parties .
For fucks sake after WoW no one had guys to question holy trident system lol
Seriously why the fuck do we need healers ?
Or tanks ?
They solved it by giving all classes self heals and crowd control abilities . Every classes ability can interact with each other .
For example an elementalist can set flame onto the ground and if the ranger shoots arrows through the fire , arrows deal fire damage over time this is fucking brilliant !
GW2's underwater battle system is so amusing.
I can't wait to see my ranger hunting underwater with harpoon and my shark pet lol.

Sidenote:
I dunno if you guys played but LOTRO had the all details that you could ask from a mmorpg.
(click to show/hide)

I know this post becomes TLTR with every word i put in but to sum it up i must say:
Fuck grinding with little details combined together , we can create memories of joy that we cannot forget for long time.

Warhammer had dynamic events too and that was way before RIFT.

As for Open Beta, there really won't be a real Open Beta, just special Press Beta in February and then a semi Open Beta (you need an invite to get in) or possibly even Beta Weekends like GW1, they haven't confirmed that however.

So don't expect an open Open Beta :)
Also GW2 is American.

Oh, one thing to note is that the leveling curve in GW2 is flat. That means if 20-21 takes you about an hour, 65-66 will also take about an hour.

Well they confirmed a press beta in feb, and a public beta in march/april which they said would be limited at first but would be accelerated to a fully open beta quickly. I've read quite a few preview articles from the past few weeks that have said this.

Yep, public quests were fun. I don't know why Warhammer recieved so much flame, I mean it had it's problems but the game was fun.

Anyone played in the era of Bright Wizard bomb squads? Was lol :D
PS: I was a Warrior Priest

I have a problem picking a class for GW2 though, pretty much all of them attract me :(
This was always my problem and because of that I ended up making a ton of alts...

Anyway, deciding between Guardian, Thief, Mesmer and Elementalist now... just don't know what to pick. I'll be Asura though, always loved tiny races in MMOs :D

Wololoo to thread revive...
Anyways if you've played the first guild wars with the eye of the north expansion, then check out this link: http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/#page=welcome (http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/#page=welcome)

I remember hearing rumors about the hall of monuments affecting the next guild wars shortly after eye of the north came out and it is indeed true. This is why I started grinding for titles in GW after eye of the north. So I found this site and discovered I got 33 reward points from my hall of monuments.

I already pre-ordered the damn thing too, cant..... wait.... any longer

P.S. Hopefully it will be accurate being a "beta calculator"

Ill probably be trying a dual pistol charr thief

If you buy it retail or order it you get a box with serial and manual, but no CD since they had some problems with CDs in GW1.

Yeah Play.com says you get the box with the serial key. The no disc thing is a bit weird. But no matter  :)

@GuildWars2
@wendiammo That is confirmed. Our first Beta Weekend Event is at the end of this month. We've not announced a firm date yet. ~RB2

(He asked if it was confirmed to get a beta weekend event this end of month)

Yeah, GW1 bought too much disks and made a big profit loss if I remember correctly.

Digital is pretty much free besides a case with some note.

Yeah tis a bit of a pain as I hate having to DL a game if for whatever reason my hard drive gets wiped. Much easier to install off a disc. No matter. I look forward to the beta weekends  :D

What I don't like about prepurchase is that you're spending money on a product you have essentially no idea how it really will play. I tend to wait a few days for reviews and peoples impressions and some decent videos about the game before I buy it

Agreed, the whole preordering thing is just a strange concept. I haven't been able to stop seeing it as a 'give us your money now, before you find out its actually shit' kind of thing.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Vexus on April 12, 2012, 11:57:18 pm
Depending on the game I guess.

I'm actively following this game progress on mmorpg.com (A site full of trolls) and while I haven't pre ordered yet I'm likely going to as from all the videos I've seen and all the information I gathered from people it doesn't look bad.

As for the game I'd rather have a disk as I hate on having to download huge clients over the internet. I had a problem previously on steam where I bought several games still barely downloaded half of them, made a format and forgot to make a copy of their downloads...... to put it shortly I have/had to redownload them again plus updates which is a huge pain in the ass.

I applied to Ignis. Just a few things though: Im not sure how many Hospitallers will be playing this game. If its only a few I wouldnt join the hospi guild but if its like 10+ members then we might make a guild. The other thing is that since Im an NA player I will probably be playing on NA servers unless there would be group events going on. Hopefully it will still let people switch between US and EU districts freely like in the first guild wars. I guess Ill just have to wait and see.

It should let you switch, since this was a discussion I had with Boss Awesome too and we checked a few facts. Point is you buy either EU or NA version of the game and this only means FROM where you can play the game, not on which servers. So Boss Awesome (who is NA) was thinking of setting his home server as EU (for World v World) and then when there's no guild action going on just going back to NA and playing there.

Quote
Is my copy of Guild Wars 2 tied to my region?

Yes. To play from North America you must purchase a North American copy of the game. To play from Europe you must purchase a European copy of the game. Note that this restriction impacts where you can play from, not which game worlds you can choose to play on.

PS: to all the people asking how we can prepurchase a product that we don't know how will play, while not knowin how it will really play is essentially true, there have been a few press betas where different gaming sites/people covered pretty much all the aspects of the game in long gameplay videos, so that gives you a good feel on how the game will work.

Yeah, that's cool, I'm fairly sure there isn't a ping problem in GW2 just as bad in M&B, I had 80 ping on the US server and on Warband that's around 140.

A lot of the GW1 population is now playing on NA servers because it's most populated and they play just fine too, but I'm unsure if a lot of people are online at your times so you can ofcourse invite a couple of mates to team up with us aswell, the more the merrier.  :)

Yeah from what I remember GW1 never had any real ping issues when switching to servers located a long way away. And this when internet connections were a lot worse (well at least for me). So it should be fine.

Well fact is that GW2 is a very different game compared to GW. There's a ton of videos from press betas showing gameplay, that might help you decide.

Meh. Seems like a completely different game. A lot more like a standard MMO than GW1 was. Doesn't seem half as much fun as GW1. Though my conjoined twin didn't get to try PvP.

We're going on our old stress test server most likely, dunno where it is located but it is EU for sure, it's called Vabbi, if it is not there we'll have to see what server we be on.

Cool!

I love exploring for hidden treasures/dungeons/shit in single player games and if I can do it in an online game it's even better.
