General Discussion / Re: Who has the worst name in cRPG
« on: August 14, 2011, 05:51:19 pm »
You're thinking of Christ, not Christopher.  Christopher is one of the most important characters in 'Winnie the Pooh' (I always get those two books mixed up too).

I liked my name until someone asked if it was a type of cheese.  Suddenly I went from fearsome brigand to dairy peddler.  I would change it, but I invested a lot of time into the brand recognition- which means peasants no longer run from me:(

General Discussion / How awful was no friendly melee damage?
« on: July 01, 2011, 03:01:29 am »
I never had the opportunity to play no friendly melee damage.  How bad was it?  I started a single player game for the first time in aeons, mainly to practice my blocvking, but what I did find was I improved my foot work and the knowledge of my surroundings.  It felt great.  Currently in C-RPG it seems very Iliad-ish, in which only heroes duel while the less elite are htere to die.  A very skilled warrior can currently kill 5 enemy surrounding him, only because no one dares hit for fear of TWing.  This seems unnatural and weird.  The greeks got rid of individual heroics thousands of years ago. No more Achilles or Gil-Gameshes.  I mean really, the whole idea of formation was so regulars could spam the elites to death.

While I was not there to experience what happened, it would seem to me that friendly melee damage only helps the elite, ie the top 10% who makes 90% of the kills.  Unfortunately we all tend to respect the elite, and tend to bow to their wills,  I personally believe that if ten mediocre guys ganged up on an Achilles, he would die.  This would never happen in the Iliad, where Hector thought he could win if his cousin? brother? (I forget) helped him fight.  But that was 600 BC, not 1257 AD.  Or whatever time we virtually live in.

So, tell me more...

I have to work long hours too, and can't play games all day either.  This really sucks, and I think someone should give me an $80K/year grant to focus on building my char and mastering game skills and getting heirloomed everything. Oh why, why did I ever stop being a teenager!?!?

I admit I skipped the iron flesh, having only played single player before CRPG.  I guess its a lot better than I surmised.

Suggestions Corner / one hit kills kills the fun
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:30:47 am »
I'm  a first gen lvl 3o with a crappy build.  Still, if I'm not on my game I make one mistake and I get killed in one hit.  I'm 18/18, with a kuyak and novogorad helm, mail mittens and splinted leather boots.  I do okay, as in equal K/D rate in small (25-) battles, but die damned quick in bigger battles.  One hit with a good 2 hander or pole arm kills me.  While I realize my build is not optimal, and I don't have crazy skills, I should be able to withstand one hit.  I may be a little cranky cuz I tend to find myself stuck between two two hander tin cans right at the begining of every battle (it seems).  They dance around me and one takes me in the back of the skull and I'm down.  Realistic I suppose, but not fun.  Waiting four minutes between deaths with zero kills due to a single misjudgement hurts.  I'm not saying nerf anything, just perhaps lower the damage all around.  After all, we all play to hit each other and more game play all around may be a good thing.

Suggestions Corner / Re: Completely new Gold + XP idea
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:30:15 pm »
This idea would not encourage the vast amount of crappy players out there to play.  It seems that most games 80% of the kills (and most likely damage as well) are done by the the top 2 or 3 players on each team.  This would mean 80% of the wealth would go to 5% of the players.  Medievally realistic but not much fun.  Then too we will hear a lot of forum rage against cav and head shotting range, because although it sucks now being the first one being randomly killed in the charge it would be very angrifying to know you're losing out on cash and exp because of your bravery.

As for team work, it might not kill it but it would maim it into something gawdawful aberration of nature.  It's bad enough with guys charging at unshielded 2 hander guys out in the open without letting archers/throwers 'soften' them up first (especially on bridges!), or leaving the protective umbrella of ranged on a rooftop to chase a peasant down for the easy kill, losing that 'arrow in the back of the head whilst dueling' advantage, plus leaving the enemy access to the archer's ladders.  Needless to say TKing TWing will increase ten fold.

As a useless player who can't hit the broad side of castle with a broad axe, I still believe I do my part.  I try draw enemy into our archer's fire (and turn them so thier backs are exposed), I try set up enemies when I see cav charging behind me, I circle round dueling guys to distract and dismay (until they recognize my char and ignore me).

All those 0 kills and 6 deaths people do something, even if is just to give better players the satisfaction of chopping them in half.  Stop paying them and they'll (ok, ok, we'll) stop playing and then you might as well just play on the duel server.

Suggestions Corner / Re: A new approach to lancing

I think things would be fine if infantry could work together. A few shielders to block the lance and a pike or two to stop the horse and then everyone hack the crap out of the guy.  unfortuantely cavalry knows this, so they just circle to the rear so we all expose our backs to their archers.  Then people get impatient and start running for cover or blindly charge the enemy and we're all separated again.

I suppose the best option is to truly put the fear of death into everyone.  Then people will work together and you won't have random cavalry guy charging in trying for 2-3 kills before he gets offed.  So imagine if every time you died there was, say a 30% chance your char would be deleted, and all your weaps and armour would go to the victors?  I would hate it myself.  Oh, and we'd need a surrender key.  Then you would spend the next games polishing armour and shovelling horse shit until you earned enough for your ransom.

Sometimes those banners really blend into the sky/forest/buildings.  I've thrown the odd jarid into a friendly horse (which is the one benefit of thrown being nerfed).  I advise getting yourself a neon pink banner to ensure it never happens again.  I think it would be great if there was a way to show the damage you've shelled out per game, whether to shields, horses or 3/4" thick tin can armour.
Mind you I should also get points for distracting guys while cav charges behind them, or drawing the two handed guy out into the open so the archers can plug him.  I realized I'm a pretty crappy one on oner, but found lots of ways to help teammates get the kills.

Following the infantry crowd doesn't help much, because the cav just charges through killing whoever doesn't see them in time, while the rest of us get driven over by our own pursuing cavalry.  For infantry to run in formation tight enough to prevent cav from running through the middle would take a lot of practice, expecially as there are no leaders nor assigned units.  It would be great if we could put pikemen in the front, 1h in the middle and 2 handers in the back, but as it is now we'd just be torn apart by the archers while we try figure out who is where and continually re-form. As it is I don't mind the constant threat from cav, though it would be nicer if a drive by thrust popped at you with a limp wristed single hand held spear wasn't an insta-kill.  You should earn insta kills with the risky couch, kind of like archers need head shots for their instakills.

Of course without thrust cav vs cav would take forever.  It would be nice if it were worth it for everyone to have a secondary half ass skill then cav could couch with lances and have sword for close work; archers could have their bardiches to defend themselves and 1 hand could throw or have pikes for cav. 2 handers already have their X-bows.

Game Balance Discussion / Re: Suggestions to re-balance throwing.
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:34:53 am »
I like the wpf accuracy deal.  I try take out rogue cav and don't dare throw till he's on me for fear of hitting friendlys until he's gone or running me over.  And one jarid doesn't slow a charging horse down oddly enough.  And then after I throw 2 jarids into a typical mailed fallen cav I get one hit killed by a bolt or arrow through my Novgorod helm.  My guy is a bit of a hopeless hybrid due to a little indecision, but I got to level 30 and I should be able to kill the odd peasant with one hit of my 3 jarids much like an archer can do with one of his 30+ arrows.

I'm 18 str 18 agi, 6 PS, 5 shield, 3 ath, 4 riding (which I'm gawdawful at, BIG mistake), 5 PT and 6 WP.  I got 129 pf one handed and 106 throwing.  Not the greatest build, but I'd like a little more damage for my throws.  At 100 wpf I don't expect good accuracy, but the odd time I do manage to hit that peasant or rouncey it should sink deep.
