Slandering? Mate, I love those books. And him making you afraid for all of your favorite characters is a great source of entertainment, because honest and righteous knights in shiny armor don't always win in Martin's books, you NEVER know what's gonna happen next.

And even though you don't read fantasy, I would still recommend books to you. Because you have very few supernatural things going on, no elves, no dwarfs and orcs, 95% of evil is done by humans, just like irl.
