EDIT: I think I found the cpu in question: http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=ADX270OCBX

If the rest of the rig plays in the same league as the CPU I'd say it isn't worth more than $250.

I didn't read the whole thread, so maybe I'm just repeating what some other guy already said..

Now try doing that in an intense situation while someone is charging at you with a knife (also knives can be thrown).

Even Austrian policemen manage to kill an attacker with a knife... And even Austrian policemen are equiped with vests that protect them from being stabbed.
Here's a story for example: http://wien.orf.at/news/stories/2587621/
Short translation: 8 policemen fired 20 shots at a man armed with a knife at close range.

Such things happen quite often here (I can remember 4 cases in the last few years), the difference is that it's always a big topic and most people find it very disturbing.

Which is why I asked if it is somehow possible to use drive from a laptop in a desktop pc.

What everyone meant is that it's not wise to use the same installation permanently on your new PC. Of course you can try to boot it to recover data.

That's not always true. Some business and academic licenses don't come with reusable keys.

Yes, but that's not very common.

The laptop using that hard drive is fucked up, which is why I want to purchase a new desktop. I have no way to currently access the drive.

In that case you should search all the stuff you got when you bought the PC. There should be a license key somewhere (maybe even on a sticker on the PC itself).

Or maybe you can start the old system on your new PC and get the key from there.

Well the problem is that The system was already pre-installed when I bought it. If I had the instalation disk for the OS I wouldnt ask. Of course I understand that HD must be updated, but that is not the main priority.

If you've got a valid Windows 7 license then you have also a valid Windows 7 license key. You find that in your current installation in your Windows' control center at "system" (it's at the end of the screen where you also see your Windows performance index). Just download a Windows 7 Demo version (they are actually full versions but only valid for 30 days I think) and then enter that key. Make sure you download a demo version of the exact same version your current Windows is ("Professional", "Home premium" and so on), otherwise the key wouldn't work.

Really? Oh crap!

Is there any way to salvage the system? I dont wan to spend like 100 dollars just for OS, when I already purchased one.

You don't need a new license, you just can't use the same installation on the new PC (at least I wouldn't recommend it). Just install Windows and use the same license key.

I'd also consider buying a new hard disk. Notebook hard disks are usually much slower than desktop hard disks (and the disk is the bottleneck of most modern PCs).

"keep ass"

Fair enough, I guess if you have to make so many of them. I guess I just personally wouldn't trust a program that generated passwords anymore than I trust a website that tells me how secure my passwords are.

I trust open source software way more than any website.

Why would I need a password generator to come up with a random string of letters, numbers, cases and symbols?

I'm not very creative.

I'm also using it as password safe (the software is called keepass) because I have to deal with a lot of credentials at work (over 200). Whenever I need a new password, I generate one. That way I simply can't reuse passwords and people who work with me are either forced to keep a large list of their passwords or start using a password safe for themselves (which they all do sooner or later) and stop reusing passwords.
