Well, as you obviously know, it's impossible to travel back in time, remove the gun, and see what happens.

We are left with logic and common sense:

For example, what if the guy you wanted to murder wasn't standing with his back to you? Attacking him with a knife, especially without training would be a high risk proposition. He could wrestle the knife from you, and kill u with it.

If both have guns, there's another game theory layer, the only option that will guarantee your survival is to shoot first. You don't even need to know for sure that he has a gun, just the reasonable chance is enough to make it advantageous for you to pull the trigger.

That's just two pretty common situations where guns raise the stakes and makes murder much more likely.

How hard is to understand that letting people, PEOPLE, the average and below idiots, carry and play with tools which can murder anyone on the slightest temporary mental whim. It's insanity.

For collectors, gunlovers, and people generally able and motivated enough to take a course, do an exam and get a mental checkup, let them have whatever they want I say.

More guns makes it more likely to choose to use a gun.

Well if you choose a gun, you are much more likely to succeed, and if you are more likely to succeed, you are more likely to go through with it. Would Einstein attack Poland if he thought he would loose?

It's like people are assuming the same would happen without guns. Which is retarded.

Yes, and they promptly disregard that it was written in a vastly different time. Where you had random attacks from the indians, just had a major war with european powers, a wild west etc..

This way of reading the constitution called "Orginialism" equates to religious fanatics that read the Bible or the Quran by the letter.

US is in a nice club of countries when it gets to intentional homicide rate:
(click to show/hide)

Point is, they shouldn't be there. They are so much richer, stable and developed than the rest of the countries there, that it doesn't make any sense at all.
Reason is of course easy access to guns, of which around 75% of their homicides can be attributed to. (2012:  8,897 firearm related murders)

Now, how fucking thick you have to be, to understand that having lots and lots of guns makes it more likely to use one? It's a quick, effective and safe tool to ensure murder for the killer. It's much less messy than using a knife, especially now that DNA goes everywhere. It's also way easier for suicide than to hang yourself or other slow, painful or unsure methods that require planning and meticulous execution. (Buy, get medicine, be guaranteed alone for hours or whatnot. Many people change their minds or are unable to successfully do it when they are in that mood. A gun is a press of a button. )

I can kind of understand it if you are a criminal, or under high risk of violent criminal activity for some reason. Or if you simply love guns. (Guns are fun, I shot the G3 and mp5 in the army, was even a decent shooter.)

I understand the country is flooded with guns, and it would be a long undertaking to reduce the amount, but you have to start somewhere. And that is, to at the least, ensure that if people want guns, they have to be a member of a club, take a shooting exam, and know how to use and store their firearms. Maybe even a mental checkup/doctors paper every 4-5 years. It really isn't too much to ask, similar things are required for drivers.

The 2nd amendment was made in a completely different time, refers to a regulated militia, where guns were large and slow firing muskets, not something you stuff in your pants.

I understand it like this: Heskey for once gave Oberyn back in similar style that Oberyn also tends flavor and generalize to the extreme. (I now read his comments trying to jump over the adjectives and colorful descriptions. It's too much really, and doesn't make his points come across stronger.) Now, I also do think Overdriven, although a fool, behaves way classier than Oberyn does, generally.

I was actually surprised that Oberyn would settle for a surprisingly realistic immigration policy though. I mean you get the feeling he wants to burn 1.3 Billion people.

----------

Anyway, I do think Fortress Europe is coming sooner or later. It simply makes too much sense for everyone south of the Mediterranean to escape their fucked up countries. And the better those countries do, the more people are enabled one way or another to try. And it's the best and smartest who will succeed, resulting in just another evil circle.

Best thing about USA, for me personally, are prices of tech. Rest, I can live without it.

No you can't. Name me your 10 top favorite bands honestly. Top 10 movies. Top 10 Tv shows. Top 10 games.

Don't name them, just think about it and where they come from. Why can't for example france and germany compete culturally? Who do most of their movies suck? Any good german bands recently? Name me 10? Or maybe some chinese literature?

(click to show/hide)

The US is by far the leader in the world culturally, economically, militarily. Something in their society makes people create good shit that the rest of the world wants. Not having been there myself, I'm extremely interested in what it is exactly, since others report it as the land of the fat people, white trash, corruption, gang crime, racism and the stupid. There's more to it than that. I'm 100% theres something positive too, something that makes at least some people perform better than they do in the rest of the world.

This is such a gigantic euro hypocrisy. We bash them while watching their TV shows, listen to their music and watch their porn, on computers and devices designed by them.

Idk, I understand the US bashing, it's the easiest way to explain stuff and keep your head sorted. The olde european arrogance is always a fallback position that I used to subscribe to as well, we are after all born with it! :D Anyway, now, I try to see it as best as I can from a distance. I try to accept there are many paradoxes about it, that it's yuuge and complex. Good things, bad things, mad things.

Are you saying war on terror is not to blame at all?

Before war on terror: Very little muslim terrorism in the west.
After war on terror: Plenty of muslim terrorism in the west.

I'm not excusing the religion, just saying that this is a major part of their thinking. Before they were usually happy left alone in their shithole countries.

Put it like this Oberyn, if the middle east instigated revolts in EU and bombed Paris and generally murdered the poor goatfarmers of europe, would you stay a peace oriented cuck? At the same time muslim culture was super popular all over the world, displacing your own?

@Oberyn
I'm not making fucking excuses for them. Understanding is not something that strictly belongs to socialist cucks. It's called critical thinking, something that is one of the absolute pillars of western civilization.

Also, please divulge your ideas on what can be done. (for the 3rd time in this thread.)

@Tydeus, americans in general are a bit disconnected from the rest of the world. No doubt because of the physical barrier.

Look at how _bad advisors_ etc informed on the war in Iraq.. I really can't contribute purely evil intent to the US, but a lot of ignorance of how the world works there is for sure. The US are literally hated in many, many parts of the world. I'm a fanboy with some/plenty reservations however. :D

So many horrible governments and dictatorships thrive on the US hate.

Whats with the uncivilised attitude Oberyn?

You, of all, should understand how people become radicalised. You've become a bit of an extremist yourself, even though you have grown up in a safe and peaceful society.

I still think we are way ahead on the K:D ratio though, even if you only count direct civilian deaths by western forces. Have you seen how the muricans wage war? There's no shortage of big ammo. I'm afraid I don't have numbers, but I would guess at least 10:1. A very conservative number, probably much higher.

So let's say we kill 10 innocent muslims for every 1 innocent of "our" guys. It's still pretty fucked up.

The only way to rationalize this is to become comfortable with the idea that some lives are more worth than others. Or that there's a war between west and islam. Suddenly you find yourself with the exact same mindset as Muslim terrorists.

What can be done? Idk. One part of me says, fuckit nukem! Because it's painful to think about. When in doubt however, I'll by far stick to the boring undramatic social democratic, slow way of dealing with things. Close the borders, (done atm.), insert state control of mosques, which is not a ban, take steps to increase integration, and try to create peace in the middle east. (right..)

Anyway Oberyn. What can practically be done? Yeah we understand the anger and the fist waving, but what can be done?

As to things that could actually be done, except from curbing immigration to sustainable levels is of course to look to Turkey.

They have state mosques afaik, where the priesthood is somewhat controlled by the state. I mean, in Norway we already have a state church, once undoubtedly established for a similar purpose. I know they are proposing some kind of approval of imams in Denmark atm.

And frankly, I think religion is the root of a whole bunch of problems. Imo why not just insert state control of all religious organizations. Hopefully they will all turn as boring and empty as the Norwegian state church is.

On a much deeper level though, I think we will see more extremism in the world, simply as a function of internet.

Back in the day, if you were a disgruntled young man with a fucked up life, you had to work hard to become radicalised. You'd have to meet an inspiring mentor, or travel to a school in Pakistan to get your head filled with islamist bullshit. That's why it practically never happened. Nowadays you can find all the community, confirmation and explanations online. It's simply much easier to meet like-minded people and join the circle jerk.

Of course, perhaps the 161:1 kill death ratio (1.3mill:4425 solder + ~3600 western civilians) of war on terror has something to do with it too, idk.

Well he is living in the most horrible European city though..  :D

But yeah, those F16s, they probably asked for confirmation or something. Rules of engagement you know. Perhaps they didn't get an answer, or simply got cold feet. It's very strange anyhow.

its not giving the power back to politicians if army try to take over the country whenever they want! how fucking retarded are you? fetullah gulen is not a politician. he is a cleric and the leader of an islamic group called ''cemaat''. get your facts straight. and it was the secularist army that exiled him...

Gulen is the perfect enemy. A guy running secret networks around the country. Anyone can be a Gulenist! If I was a dictator, I would so nourish such an idea. Gives perfect excuse to arrest anyone.

Don't buy this bullshit.

Coup was either likely staged, or "allowed" by Erdogan. Perfect way to trap his enemies in the army. It only takes 1 rat to destroy the whole plan, and he was most likely warned. Still, if he hadn't been able to reach the population and tell them to go into the streets, it might have turned out much different. At the least it would have been much longer and bloodier.

British politics are strange to me.

Imo, the single biggest problem you have in Britain is the class system, most off all caused and expressed by the school system. (But also deeply programmed in the population) The Tories ARE the class system distilled!

And the goddamn newspapers you have there. Should be some kind of anti-trust or independence laws invoked so Murdoch can't have as much control as he has.

But then again, the left has lost its way, all over the world. It needs new ideas, perhaps focusing on systemic meritocratic aspects, by inhibiting inheritance and nepotism, allowing a fair playground for everyone.

Good luck Britain :)

That's a good analogy. "Literary analysis" in school is largely the same bullshit, you're trying hard to insert your own feelings into the artist's work and call it his original intention. Uhm, what is the meaning of the time of the day here? Does it represent the duality of Man? Or could it maybe be that the writer flipped a coin? Of course, still makes a hundred times more sense than trying to fit a red rectangle into the round hole of actual art.

I do agree that lots of people walk around with this school experience, and it is largely pointless. Am I doing this right? Did I say something smart now? It's quite destructive sometimes, not only to experience art, but it also destroys reading for a lot of people. I have the same experience as Paul, I hated it. Only later did I understand that that approach was largely a dead road, actually inhibiting lots of experiences.

Whenever art is trying to say something that cannot be easily put into words, that approach is murder. You are not in the gallery to try to logically understand everything. You are not there to say intelligent things and try to come across as cultured or smart. Lots of people walk around with a feeling of not belonging, and are afraid to say something that might come out as stupid. Lots of people see it as an ordeal that has to be avoided. I know this feeling very well myself. (Since I'm not an aristo, just middle class from potato country.) :D

If you find yourself on a gallery date, I recommend not saying a thing. Be open and like whatever you like. Hate whatever you hate. Maybe, just maybe, you will get a fresh thought, or a new emotion. Or understand something, your way. If you find yourself with someone trying to extract some kind of analysis from everything, you can pretty safely disregard it as bullshit. Perhaps even conclude that they have a forced and narrow understanding. I can attest that there ARE tons of intellectual dishonesty and posing, and bullshit, and capitalism, and taste-wars in the art world. I don't envy my friends in that field in the least.

Some art is just boring intellectual exercises, but most of it struggles to be something more as well. Some needs context of art history, or political situation to be understood. Personally I find this the most boring, since I don't have direct access to whatever zeitgeist was prevalent. I don't however, brush it off as stupid off the bat. I acknowledge that perhaps I simply don't have the tools for it, and perhaps no young people of today has them in full.

- About the red circle you keep messing about. Most famously it is used on the lucky strike packet, my former cigarette brand. It's designed by Raymond Loewy, someone even Xant would accept as a good artist. Apparently sales skyrocketed after the new design was introduced.
