Game Balance Discussion / Re: What IS balanced?
« on: March 24, 2011, 11:39:55 pm »
you dont have throwing there which is the only thing i think is unbalanced

they hit with the power of a crossbow, but the player can release projectiles with the same speed as an archer
on top of that they can use a shield with it as well, which no other ranged class can do

Hmm... you've touched upon a thrower's strengths but you've neglected to mention their weaknesses! They might throw as fast as an archer and with the strength of xbow, but they have less ammo than either, and less range and less accuracy. I'd say they're balanced. Crossbows are still a little too effective with 0 WPF, but that can be easily fixed.

you should be ashamed - confessions of a KS'er...

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But nah... you never know how a fight is going to go, so better to run in there with the Bardiche o' Doom and put a swift end to their shenanigans! Unless you miss. And hit your team mate. That happens.

Like MrExxc I am also living proof that using kill/death ratio as a judge of player skill is flawed. I run around with a 24/15 build one-hit-killing people with a (soon to be heirloomed) Great Long Bardiche. I frequently get a 2/1 or 3/1 ratio, but I'm a poor manual blocker, my foot work leaves much to be desired and the less said about my timing the better. I'm also something of a kill stealer.

Heh, no.

General Discussion / Re: Too much damage overall?

Nope, I think the amount of damage is just fine. I'm glad most people seem to feel the same way.

Well, yes, but... I mean, I'm not some expert manual blocker, but I've once killed 12 people spamming my MW glaive around.

As Xant said, good for you! They made the mistake of attacking you one by one and you were just better than them, so you killed them all as they came. This is exactly the way it should be! I love watching the good players chewing through the lesser players (yes, even if that probably includes me). If combat was made less lethal it would degenerate into protracted slugging matches, and that means we would no longer see heroes running into groups of enemies and cutting them down like wheat before a scythe! I think it's an incredible sight to witness and I would miss it terribly. :( It's our own fault if we can't block, and we should get punished for it.

First,  AGI no longer has any passive boosts.  We all believed it increased attack speed, and it used to, but Walt-F4 disproved that in another thread.  STR gives both a slight damage increase (was this ever proved?) and HP boost.

Even if we do know that it does not affect attack speed, we still do not know for a fact that it has no passive boosts, do we? :?

Surely it could be affecting block speed, attack recovery speed or feint (well, chamber) speed?

I've been playing for a while now, but I still struggle with blocking. Practising against the AI in the single player training grounds and against people in the duel server are good suggestions.

I'd like to add two minor details I've found important.

1. Make sure the third person camera is zoomed as far out as possible (minus key on num pad I think). I realised only recently that you can change this! The levels of zoom are quite small, but at the furthest away setting it prevents the camera from falling behind you and obscuring the combatant in front.

2. Try to keep the camera quite high, not directly behind your characters shoulders. Otherwise when your opponent feints a chop and you go to block, you will drag the camera down and your opponent will be obscured by your shoulders and head! My God, the number of times this has killed me! The penalty is that some of you blows might go a little low, but I think it's worth it to have better awareness of what your opponent is doing. Watch the good players on youtube videos: they always seem to have the camera quite high.

And as someone else said, learn to fight with small mouse movements. Again, you want to keep your opponent in view; large movements will throw the camera around and make spotting incoming blows difficult.

Or, how about just removing a weapon slot? A reduction from 4 slots to 3 would still allow for hybrids, but would force them to consider their weapon choice more carefully.

General Off Topic / Re: Do you smoke
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:42:51 pm »
Yes, but only three roll-ups per day. I know that sounds odd. Among the people I know who smoke, I'm the only person who smokes so few cigarettes.

Years ago when I boasted of only smoking 3 cigarettes each day, people used to tell me that my habit would increase, but it never did. Sometimes if I'm stressed or if I'm drinking alcohol the number goes up, but never by much.

Knowing my luck though, I'll still probably get cancer.  :(  Speaking of cancer, I watched my mother die from cancer, so perhaps it's that which has kept me from smoking many cigarettes?

Game Balance Discussion / Re: Throwing Nerf
« on: March 08, 2011, 02:49:04 am »
I've tried throwing in the past and, no, I don't think it needs nerfed. Maybe the Lances are a little too powerful (should be around 50 pierce), but that's it. Heh, anyway, I've noticed far more people are hybrid crossbow users now. At least the throwers have to invest skillpoints to throw - crossbow users don't even have to do that!

Beginner's Help and Guides / Re: best 2h build
« on: March 02, 2011, 11:15:13 pm »
I'm still somewhat of a 2h 'noob' - by that I mean that I have a lot to learn - but in my experience I find high agility to be quite unnecessary. At even 15 agility and with all your WPF in 2h you can be quite effective in a duel. It's nice to be able to dispatch someone in one or two hits. My current build is going to be a 24/17. I'll see how that goes.

So between danish and german... which one is best? That +1 in length does make any difference?

I started heirlooming a Danish, but I wish that I had gone for German instead. Once fully masterworked, the German has +4 pierce damage over the Danish, and only -2 cut damage. I'd rather have the +4 pierce thrust of the German than +2 cut slash of the Danish.

As for the +1 length, no, I don't think even the best players could turn such a small increase in length into a significant bonus in combat. If it was +5 then perhaps...
