General Discussion / State of the mod.
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:30:49 am »
Another suck-up thread.  We're really having fun today.  Its bizarre how the attitude changed just from hearing good news about the mod and the developers' ambitions.  We didn't talk about balance, we didn't complain - most of us just had a blast playing together again.  Its refreshing to see the support from the playerbase and to see familiar faces crawl out of the woodwork to see just what was up (and to soak up the 2x XP of course).

Thank you for your continued efforts.  I'm very excited, and its really a rare occasion that the bar is set far beyond expectation, and we didn't even get a crpg patch today.  Donating, or investing, rather, was a simple decision for all of us, and even those with little or no to spare have shown their appreciation and wish they could as well.  Good luck working on the project.  We've thrown a lot at you, and though we offer a lot of terribly subjective and conflicting suggestions, its good to see that this small community cares.  140 man battles with melee intensity, coupled with cav and ranged intermixed.  Clans, large and small, got together again, showing impressive charges and teamplay that integrated well in public battle.

Even the people dying for some silly antics got to experience 120 people fighting in the hole in the Arena, siege towers battles, ridiculous teamwounding, and a lot of genuinely fun times.  It made me say "I want to play crpg today," and will continue to.  All of the excess and the apparent problems were put into better perspective as well.  Looking forward to the upcoming patch, and am excited for updates on the project.

I hope somebody video taped some of the silly shit on battle tonight though.  Knocking over the siege tower filled with people, the fights in the holes and what not.

Suggestions Corner / Potential WPF / WM Changes
« on: December 26, 2012, 03:03:54 am »
Hey, I know its been talked about a lot, and if I've heard correctly devs have been discussing what to do with weaponmaster + the wpf curve to give more incentive for the skill and for balanced builds.

Most likely they could take away the wpf gained on level up so that you are forced to pump a couple points into weaponmaster if you want to maintain your 100-120 wpf in a single weapon skill.

It'd be a fair decision, absolutely.  Several people were discussing how it'd really affect hybrid builds though, and not really make weaponmaster 'better', but would make strength builds 'worse'.  What I think might be nice is having ranks, much like the old Baldur's Gate games.

Rank 0 - Untrained - suffer a set penalty      (or the equivalent of 1 wpf now)

Rank 1 - Proficient - Negates basic penalty   (60  wpf)
Rank 2 - Specialized - Small bonus                (100  wpf)
Rank 3 - Master - moderate bonus                (120  wpf)
Rank 4 - High Master - larger bonus              (150  wpf
Rank 5 - Grand Master - even larger bonus   (170 current wpf)

It would be a simple system in practice, it would just take balancing.  Just an idea, but the ranks could cost 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively, or perhaps set a plateu at 3.  You'd have 1 to spend at level 1, and then get another every 15 levels, so two more in any character's career.  Each rank of weaponmaster would give you 1, and perhaps another point for every 6 agility.  This would give agility a passive benefit, much like the +1 hp of strength.

A balanced 18/18 build would get 3 + 3 + 6 = 12 points to spend, allowing him to get Rank 4 in one weapon skill, or rank 3 in 2 seperate weapon skills.  *On second thought, with the numbers I laid out, that's right about where it is now.  FML.  Maybe Rank 5 of weapon master starts giving you 2 weapon skill points - a small bonus to a 24/15 build who doesn't want to go 21/18 for the 6 agi multiple bonus, but doesn't want to go 27/12.*

This way weaponmaster is just as beneficial at rank 1 as it is at rank 7.  Right now, only pumping 2-3 weaponmaster isn't as significant as pumping 7 - but players pumping 7 aren't seeing enough benefit when they could spend those 7 points into the static benefit of ironflesh, that gives 2 hp every rank.

Just thoughts.  Don't scream at me.  I'm going out for coffee so I'm gonna edit this later and leave it as a shit post for you to tear apart.

Suggestions Corner / Revert Turnspeed nerf on Overheads only.
« on: December 11, 2012, 06:56:25 pm »
Popping another one of these topics up for people to discuss.

The turnspeed nerf was implemented mostly because of the thrust being able to connect while rotating your character.  On the thrust its very appropriate, and was definitely an improvement on the game, given the fact that pike and longspears are still very valuable weapons on the battlefield.

The nature of overhead swings are very limiting though.  The overhead is a riskier move already, as you open yourself up to seize a powerful offensive opportunity.  They're usable in the current state, but many weapons, especially the 120-180 length category lose a large portion of their effectiveness, especially as makeshift support weapons.

Weapons that really took the biggest hit are the 2D polearms:

Long Voulge, Swiss Halberd, English Bill, Long Maul
Bamboo Spear, Heavy Lance
Awlpike, Long Awlpike
The new Partisan, Ranseur, Spetum, etc. Could all benefit as well, as they possess unique overheads.

The variety of weaponry based around unique overhead attacks was astounding, and has the potential to be so more with the new polearms in place.  Can WSE implement such a change on one attack direction only?  I love swords and sideswings as much as the next guy, but this would definitely add flavor.

Final Thought:  Someone expressed a legitimate concern, and that is about Crushthrough weapons, especially in the case of great mauls that can connect by turning into the body after the weapon has already been lowered.  This would normally be blocked, but crushthrough poses an entirely different problem.  The long maul... I guess too, but dear god, just put the poor thing out of its misery.

Suggestions Corner / Strat Sieges and Spawn Flags
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:55:43 pm »
Strategus's major flaws lie in the spawn flags and the defective siege gear.  In another thread discussing how spawns and respawns are addressed, several people brought up good points.  This idea just came to mind, so I'm just hoping for discussion, rather than a Yes or No.

We play strat battles for large-scale battles that consist of utilizing tactics, choke points, and various equipment loadouts to appropriately handle opponents in multiple settings.  Right now, castles are the point of interest, and struggles lie around buggy siege equipment, towers that don't break, walls that never fall, ladders that need to be placed in silly ways to avoid being tickled apart by long spears, and capping spawn flags with the same action button that picks up the dozens of littered weapons that decorate the numerous bodies on the floor.

To repost what I said elsewhere,

(click to show/hide)

Furthermore, I had in mind a potential change to spawn flags.  Zones of control, or control points rather than spawn flags might be an effective means to fight over a castle.  I'd hate to see it simplified to taking point A, B, and C, but there could be a number of them, up to 5 or 6 even, for each of the important walls, the front, middle, and rear courtyard, and each one takes down all the flags as one cluster.  Siege would be a better game mode if all flags had to be taken down instead of just the one in the center of a tower or courtyard, and we wouldn't see the same 10 athletics character make a break and put up half the flags, completely undoing the past 40 minute struggle.  You also won't see the same potential abuse where you can't capture a flag because someone is hiding on the upper floor, or in unreachable places.

Again, just a suggestion.  The amount of hours of work to make these changes would be outrageous.  I don't want my suggestion to come true, I want someone with a better idea to step forward and put us in the right direction; one that leans toward making village fights more favorable and castle sieges more fun and interesting, because right now open field battles have been the most dynamic, which is the least this game has to offer.

Closed Requests / Ban Request - archer_armagedon
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:17:33 am »
Was playing late night siege around 3:30-4 am CST, and he expressed some discontent with some of the game balance features.  He gave me a team 'love tap' for 40% of my hp when he spawned on my team, so I said somethin' like, hey man, im just a 15 str agi build, there's been greater injustices in the history of the mod.  Gave me the w/e attitude, and we moved on.  He gave a few other teammates similar teamwounds that map, and the very next map I decided to screenshot it since it was so blatant.

Just needs a time out.  Its late night siege, so its not a great deal, but he's repeatedly and intentionally provoking people.

He did an inb4banthread-ban-post on Draulius as well, which is a seperate issue that I didn't witness, but the TWing and TKing we just witnessed was an isolated incident.

Add the ability for Seppuku if you have a katana / wakizashi / nodachi / strange armor / strange boots / strange helmet.

So even if you only wear heavy strange boots, you still possess the samurai spirit and can die with honor.

Strategus General Discussion / [Suggestion] Fief Transaction Log
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:14:52 pm »
Hey community, was wondering what you thought of this idea.  Since its a heavy S&D game right now, I've seen things get pretty salty between people using up each others points without permission.  Personally, I hate it and want to flame it into the ground - but its honestly appropriate and adds a great deal to the game.  I trust it'll be rebalanced, and understand this is the first testing phase and this round of strat has still only begun.

Trading goods should be crucial, but right now its honestly viewed as a terrorist act to sell your goods to somebody's fief.  There's a sense of partitioning off the land much much more than before, which is an interesting thing and adds a whole new dynamic to the mental / diplomacy game, but its a bit drastic atm.  The independants struggle, and the clans are left policing the lands at odd hours making sure somebody didn't trade goods and get away with it.

To the point:
Could there be a transaction log to keep track of transactions and commerce in any given fief.

Obviously it doesn't make sense to oversee and approve each transaction made, but fief owners should have the power to regulate in a small form the city's commerce.  An idea might be to be able to spend production points on actually hiring the imaginary workforce that would keep these records for the Lord to refer to in the future.

That way if it is an optional mechanic, you wouldn't need to utilize it, but it would make people wary that they might be being recorded or surveyed.  Give people an option to spend their resources on basic reconnaissance.

Diplomacy / A Calradian Heart Bleeds for Universal Economic Education
« on: September 28, 2012, 10:39:43 pm »
A new leaf turns in the world of cRPG.  Like goldfish swimming in a stagnant refuse-filled fishbowl of duped gold, full plate, and torn contracts, we have been gently lifted into our new home - a large tank with crates, barrels, fake seaweed, sunken ships, and treasure chests alike.  It is good here, and the air is fresh and beautiful.  Oddly though, the caretaker of this tank has left the pricetags on all of the decorations.

Little Uumdi II stood atop the southernmost watchtower of New Derchios Castle.  Saluting the sun, he began to meditate on his father's exploits and misadventures, taking heed to the advice he was given.

**Wear heavy armor, son.  I sold my robe so that you could wear the garb of a true man.  It fetched a fair price, as the Tide pen your grandmother gave us worked rather well on the mustard stains from numerous Calradian-style hot dogs.**

"Father, I shall make you proud," he said, as he stood up and reached with bandaged hands toward a ruined, splintered pitchfork.  Filled with wondrous visions of conquest, adventure, and comradery, little Uumdi basked in the moment, and he could swear he felt within his person the entirety of the cosmos.

"Uumdi!  Your orders!" came a shout from the near distance.  His commanding officer came to him, armed to the teeth in a green shirt and leather cap, carrying a menacing looking cudgel at his waist.

Oh, the excitement!  Finally, a chance to become a real man just like his father.

Little did he know, his father never truly felt fulfilled, and spent his final hours reflecting that he never found an answer, and "that day" never came when he would finally understand a thing about life.

"Bandits have left the area.  They cannot be allowed to escape.  Here are your mission orders, they are making a break to the northeast, you should make it within 3 hours travel if you go now.  Take our finest swaybacked rounceys and godspeed."

So unquestioningly, he allowed his clarity to dissipate and in its place came a lust for blood masked with justice.  With fleet of foot and all that, he left the castle gates, and left a cloud of dust as the broken horses pounded their hooves on the cold autumn earth.

A caravan of 100 men walked leisurely in the distance as the sun shined brightly on a cloudless day.  Birds carelessly chirped as the men laugh and almost seemed to scamper as children on this peaceful day.

"Surely they sense my presence.  Why aren't they alarmed and fleeing for their very lives?  Perhaps they aim to... throw me off.  Surely they are the criminal scum I seek..." Uumdi thought to himself before making the final charge to confront the men.  Finally, he ordered the cavalry to surround them, and the infantry to engage in formation only a stone's throw away while he read his demand.

"Halt!  You are under the command of this legion to hand over your goods and leave the area, or die miserably as you should," Uumdi said with words summoned from the darkest regions of his bowels.  Just like dear old dad he liked playing tough guy to people he could outrun.

"What are the charges?  This is surely a mistake," said the caravan leader.  "What are your orders, who is demanding this?"

Realizing he did not rightly run a doubt through his mind, he quickly fell back to his contract orders.  Playing too much Borderlands 2, he hoped he could power through his lack of strategus knowledge and be a proud member of his strategus faction.  With a deep breathe, he aimed to bellow the strong words written by another man towards the scoundrel who dared defy him to his face.

With one glance at his mission orders, his expression changed from fierce and confident to puzzled; even carrying signs of embarrassment.  "You....  you... took.   One moment, I've got an itch," Uumdi said, with the outrageous plot to divert attention to his genitals for a moment while he collected himself in the face of the truth of his orders:

(click to show/hide)

Surely... he was justified in bringing justice.  Could he face the shame of turning around empty handed and the betrayal of his friends and loved ones?  He quickly remembered an age-old superstition, that in this world, men never truly die.  Trusting in the interconnectedness of man and clinging to a far-out ideal that things will work out with understanding in time, he had to make a decision.

"Sire... You have been charged with defiling the good fiefs of our faction.  When you buy and sell goods you drastically hurt the Supply and Demand rating," he said, scrambling to justify the slaughter of 100 men.

"You can't be serious.  In any case, I'll gladly move to another area."

"The damage has already been done, my friend.  I'm terribly sorry, but we... we will notify the next of kin of what has happened on this day."  With the flashing of steel (in reality, it was a 10-second no show, haha) and in the name of numbers, men became even more numbers.

Knowing well he could not wash his hands of the issue, little Uumdi knew he could only devote his life to educating first himself and then the public.  Hopefully one day a call-to-arms will blossom and the great nations of this brave new world will come together and seek even the slightest level of mutual understanding about themselves and world they live in.

Hey guys, I don't play too much anymore, so I'm looking to sell or trade my offhand.  Phenominal weapon.  102 Speed, 35 cut damage, awesome graphic - I'm probably making a terrible decision, but I don't get enough use out of it since I generally just use my pole till I die, and use it to show off that I still know how to swing sideways haha

Shoot me any offers.  I still like it, so I apologize if I seem stingy, since I know it doesn't fetch the highest market value.  Loom points and gold would be nice, but I'll consider anything.

Diplomacy / Reflections and Revelations of a Zealot's Demise
« on: July 29, 2012, 02:16:23 pm »
The waters of the Pirush River are illuminated by the raging fires of the south.  The strength of the survivors is boorishly hidden behind stoic glares and mangled armor.  These men know no pity, not for others, nor themselves.  They willingly give their lives for the simple cause of discord, even whilst staring perplexed at their own pathetic images in the finely polished steel of the countless adversaries.

Be they enemies to some, foes to others, rivals to yet another, can we trace our steps back far enough to remember why?  For fear of oppression?  To generously nourish the pride of the few?  To the few who possess surplus resentment we treat them with the blood of our own men?

Or was it for our home?  Some wonder if Stratia is, was, or ever will be the land that our hearts truly belong.  We've marched through countless plains and steppes, becoming lost in mountainsides and stubbing our toes and spraining our ankles so badly on the bridges of the land that we've needed to wait days for someone to tell us to get moving again.  We've wandered restlessly each night for years.  Each day has been spent ravaging the land, turning every stone, sifting through eel-infested waters, and chipping off birch bark, waiting, sifting, salivating for the very taste of stratia once more.

Quixotic eyes lie behind a bloodstained turban.  They quickly winced and nearly welled into tears remembering the events of this troubled life.  These men have been lied to for generations.  The sons and daughters born of loving parents have fought valiantly in the face of oppressive men;  Men whose auras felt different - men who moved in such ways that seemed to alter the reality of time and space.  Surely this was not the way life was meant to be lived.  This was not the way War was to be fought, beyond the mysterious Great Line of chadz.

The land was slowly dying.  Though peaceful for months, this morbid and stagnant existence sent whispers throughout Calradia.  Some of our men cursed Stratia's name while others clung to their beloved ideals.  Some men strove to restore its origins in an external manner: to reforge the good name of Stratia with claims to be the last remaining inheritors and possessing superior ancestry.  These men, though mistaken, could not be blamed.  Some might argue that the lesser of two evils lies in a reformation.  One man will stand aloof - his heart deadened by countless grafted wounds.  Another man will acknowledge this exhaustion and the pain will grow so large that change is inevitable.  Still, both men live and breathe, though their breathing reeks of different flavors of bile.  Both men are mistaken and both men are wretched.

Resting under a tree, the once Lord, now homeless vagrant Uumdi sat underneathe the setting sun in the presence of a dying pine tree.

Moving the cloth that covered his chapped lips, he calmly said "Set up camp here, and we'll endeavor to conquer the bridge in the morn."  As the setting sky turned dark, he gazed up at the stars, reflecting on his torn garment.  The name Astralis burned in his mind, as he remembered the medic pulling an engraved arrow from his hip.  "To Agile" it read.

"Astralis... of the stars.." he muttered to himself.  Folk tunes played and beautiful poetic musings were recited in his mind as he envisioned a carefree night of tavern crawling with fellow Calradians.  This did not offend his mind, yet the thoughts peacefully floated across its stage.  Denars flew and drinks foamed over a game of Karnoffel with Robert Namo and Bran Stark in the parlour room nearest the Astralis Registrar.  His mind's eye then focused on Genric, a man from his youth and an apprentice in the Astralis roster.  He symbolized a man untainted by the propaganda of the times, a man of pure unbridled potential.  They once shared stories of true love and youthful ambition - even these had turned to war during these desperate times.

An internal commotion containing every brave and legendary warrior assailed Uumdi, and the loudest thoughts were of Rodrick's catcalls to Miley in the night.  Even memories of testing war machines upon castle walls with the strange foreigners Nebun and Vovka were deposited into his conscience.  Even the very scourges of this physical plane; even those darkened figures behind the Great Line of chadz he grew to know and love.

It was then that he opened his eyes to see the darkness of midnight and the brilliance of the the stars.  They seemed to shut off for a moment, and methodically reignite in a cascade of radiance.  It dawned on him that Stratia lies within each and every man.  This is the "Heaven" that some hospitallers had mentioned in times of study and practice.

Uumdi was suffering, and in that moment felt a tiny share of each and every Calradian's suffering.  That feeling was overwhelming, a shock to the consciousness, and had it been any larger a portion of sorrow it would surely kill any man or God alike.  When we suffer we cause others to suffer.  To truly be a Chosen Hand of the Ascended Order of Stratia, we must practice awareness, forgiveness, and seek the ultimate truth always, right?  Though our lifestyles seem crude and impulsive, are we not capable of hospitality and sacrifice for humanity too?  As the war wages ever onward, Hospitaller may not be our true foe, but rather our own selves - and to them, CHAOS may not be their true foe, but their own respective selves as well.

Though good intentions are not enough, he realized once again that the sacrifice of his brethren was for the simple goal of having a superior atmosphere for war in the world.  No matter how civilized man is, war is hell - but it is also the psychological gymnasium for true heroes to be birthed.  To truly know suffering is something none of us have asked for, but in these ordeals we should be better able to understand the ailments of others, and be granted fortitude with them.

---

The pounding of boots upon the dirty ground rustled Uumdi's jimmies, but he did not awaken.  It was not until a cold slap awakened him that he jolted back to consciousness.  Wiping the drool from his face, he realized that dawn had arrived and that men were already mobilizing in the wee hours of the morn.  In one last conscious effort, he wished these revelations upon all men with ears to hear.

Many more would die in this transitory war, and though regrettable, these lives were not within his power.  Out in the wilderness, fleeing from the Crusader's march, he could only hope that his mental waves reached the bleeding hearts of Calradia, and that the next chapter that the Divine chadz has been planning would consist of greater intelligence and the well-being and interest of everyone in mind.  However Chaotic this decision was on the part of his people, Uumdi hopes that the Kingdoms will discuss the credibility of their ideals, and address the truly degenerated state of mankind.
