Title: Get a shield nub! ok but wich one ?
Post by: Blackbow on February 06, 2018, 09:00:32 am
I'm planning to loom a shield but i cant choose between all of them.
As ex archer i always had in mind than circle shape shields are the best, because to me they have better cover to block projectile from sides but i'm maybe wrong.
So for you what is the best shield ?

Try out few first, heavy round shield, elite cav shield are a good choice. Maybe new pavise shields, but I didn't try them myself. Kite shields will get you shot from sides very often.

Steel Buckler

Don't get the buckler. It's awful, even with 10 shield skill. You'll barely catch any arrows with it.

You're correct about the round shields, they're usually best for soaking up arrows. Elite cav shield and (heavy) round shield are top picks.

How many shield points are u looking forward to spend? The more u have the smaller/faster ur choice of shield should be

if you're planning to do cav: since I got myself some shield skill, elite cavalry shield has paid off so well

I like this one. Been using it a little while now and got it +3'd.

No difficulty requirement so doesn't affect my build. Not a great shield tbh but just having it acts as a deterrent for ranged.

I went for one shield skill and my shield was 100% useless against any ranged :) They just shoot over it. U play on EU strat battles james. U should know that.

Try the rondache. It's nice.

thx for all answers guys
I'm surpised nobody told me huscarl shield
I forgot to mention i already have a plain cavalry shield wich is nice but i found it a bit weak against too many hits, i want something a bit more solid.
Because i change very often of build i want something polyvalent, i generaly go for 4 to 6 shield skill on my builds, i feel like with lower shield skill it let projectile go through or hit legs.
for my next build i'm planing to make an hybrid 1h/hoplite build

@Dalhi : i found elite cavalry shield a bit weak but havent tried yet the  heavy round shield and about pavise their red color make you spoted from far by ranged... but i will maybe try them too

@austrian : clearly no ! =p

@Gurnisson: yeah i'm tempted by elite cav shield even if i found him a bit weak, but have to try the heavy round shield

@blackbird: around 4 and 6 shield skill

@ikarus : for cav i already have my plain cav shield wich is enough to me, so i want something for on foot class

@njames89 : yeah like i said i have one already but i want something more solid, and with 0 shield skill i still get shot a lot but with 5 skill in shield its fine but not solid enough to my taste

@Bob_Ross : thx for proposing the rondache i completly forgot about this one i will test it

atm i hesitate between heavy round shield, elite cav shield, rondache, huscarl round shield

so one more question guys what you think about huscarl shield? why u dont choose it ? too slow too heavy i guess ?

I haven't played with huscarl's since the speed buff, but it felt too slow before. Maybe the 3 speed is enough to make it great, but I'm not sure. If you like playing in the front lines and target switch, I'd use a faster shield, but for a defensive setup in mass melee it could be pretty beastly.

well atm i'm doing well with the rondache but im afraid to loom it because of his size dont reflect reality in game and i'm scary than devs nerf it in futur...

@man of steel : yeah already tried it but the side cover is shit imo
@ gurni : yeah same havent tried huscarl with new speed but i doubt it change something... well i still need to try
@ tristant: thx dude but my plan is too use an heirloom exchange on the Round Steel Buckler i have

nvm Tristan i'm not a big fan of huscarl it's clearly too slow...

about all my test atm :
- i rly enjoy rondache but a bit slow and scary to see it nerf in futur
- Knightly Kite Shield is nice but dont cover enough vs ranged
- Knightly Heater Shield is like kite shield but a bit better about cover but still not enough to my taste
- Elite Cavalry Shield is ok
- i still have to try Heavy Round Shield

I'm sorry to have missed a shield discussion -- it's my favorite topic.

Don't forget that shields are to be used in melee as well as to block arrows...so you have to balance the coverage with the durability and speed of the shield.

Having extra shield skill increases the "forcefield" of your shield.  So with 4 or 5 shield skill, even the narrower shields will provide plenty of blockage against arrows.  Because of this, there is no need for most round shields.  Why?  Round shields are wider, but because of that they sacrifice durability and/or speed to keep them balanced.

Elite cav shield is made of paper.  If you want your shield to break in three hits then maybe you should use it.  The "knighly" shields that many prefer are slightly better, but still weak. Heavy round shield is only mediocre -- lacking in speed and durability for what it is.

The worthwhile best-balanced shields are:
Kite shield (for low shield skill)
Heavy Kite Shield
Heavy Heater Shield

They are all tough shields, with plenty of speed.  Best all-arounders that will save your leathery, scaly hide.

Next up, consider the toughest shields. I know you've tried some slower shields -- but keep in mind you have to adjust your playstyle a little when using them.  You must practice patience and not fall for feints -- slow and steady, young terrapin.

Heavy Board Shield
Plate covered Round Shield
Steel shield
+other weird new ones

The metal shields have very high armor.  Unless your opponent has an axe, you can safely let them beat on your shield for as long as it takes to find an opening to attack.  Frustrating the enemy with a nigh-invincible shield usually makes them over-extend themselves and mess up.  The Heavy Board shield (and those with similar stats like Pavise and Triangle shield) have very high hitpoints and fare better against axes.

BONUS: Shield weight slows you down a bit, but helps resist crush-through weapons.  Being able to potentially block mauls (the bane of all turtles) is very nice.

Yeah, triangle shield is legit.  Only problem is it's got those garish stripes.  If you want your enemies to go cross-eyed before your split their skulls, it's perfect.  :P

ty for all advice
I finaly went for rondache +3 and i rly enjoy it.
specialy for the high body armor stat, cover is ok, the weight is a bit high but not too much...
but like you said i have to play more carefully because of the speed, feinting is dangerous =p
and i like the skin...

about kite shield when i face a guy with this kind of shield, as ranged im pretty sure than i will manage to place a shot (side step shot is ez against them), so yeah they are awesome for melee but against ranged not so much
