Thieves have dug a 50ft (15m) tunnel underneath a cash machine to steal a "significant amount of cash", police said.Detectives believe the perpetrators spent months building the tunnel to access the ATM at Tesco Express on Liverpool Road in Eccles, Salford.They completed their burrowing through wasteland and into the shop overnight on FridayThe thieves stole cash boxes before escaping back through the tunnel, which police describe as having a "complex structure".Detective superintendent Mark Toker said: "These people had obviously spent a long time plotting this crime and I doubt they would have been able to keep their plans secret for all that time, without telling others about their elaborate scheme."The offenders must have spent long periods of time in the area over the last few months, which people may have noticed.
It is not the first time thieves have tunnelled their way to cash in Great Manchester.Police said those responsible for the raid of a Blockbuster shop in Levenshulme spent six months burrowing a 100ft tunnel with lighting and roof supports.The theft occurred in January 2012, eight miles from Friday's raid.
