it was alright but they never released any deeper game modes like strategus that I am aware of and the customization was limited compared to cRPG for equip.

They are used to upgrade items (+1,+2 or +3) or can be sold on the marketplace for a large amount of gold. Can be used on the inventory items screen or sold/traded/auctioned on marketplace tab.
