Suggestions Corner / Cavalry stuff
« on: May 22, 2011, 04:55:06 pm »
So, yes, cavalry is OP.

Prior to the last big patch, the amount of ranged spam kept them in check to a degree.

The arguments that cav only do so well due to unaware players are partly true, but it isn't just awareness. With a certain amount of cav, awareness won't help. The same goes for organisation. Anyway, cRPG shouldn't be balanced only for dedicated, organised clans or teams.
The argument that cav only do well on certain maps is also invalid, since any cav player can dismount and play as effective infantry with no penalties at all.

Currently its very easy to get a lot of kills as cavalry, with not much effort. Of course, its easier for some types of cavalry than others.
But I don't think buffing ranged is an answer. Currently ranged don't suffer the most from cavalry, infantry do. Since infantry are less able to protect ranged players from cav, ranged also suffer. Ranged do fine against cav, its just that the cav have killed the rest of their team.
Nor do I think nerfing the stats of horses in general, or nerfing the effects of the riding skill, are a good solution.

So, my suggestion is to make playing as cav more difficult, and to internally rebalance horses a bit. I think light cav (horses below destrier or warhorse maybe) should have to play a support role. At the moment, while some players do indeed perform a support role very effectively, the problem is that they don't have to. Lance or 1hand/shield + armoured horse cav can quite easily act completely alone and get lots and lots of kills.
Armoured horses should be far more effective than they are now. The only players I've seen get any use out of them are 1hand+shield cav, because they can combine horse and player durability. Horse archers also do quite well with them.

So:

1) Increase difficulty requirements of all light horses except sumpter, rouncey, and palfrey by 1. Also increase cataphract and charger difficulty by 1. So then you have Sumpter tier 2; Rouncey and Palfrey tier 3; Steppe and Desert tier 4; Courser, Arabian, Destrier, Warhorse, Large Warhorse tier 5; Cataphract, Charger, Mamluke, Plated Charger tier 6.

3-4 riding is quite low for dedicated cav. 5 riding (15 agi) becomes the standard for a dedicated cav player. This still leaves an option of playing a more strength or agility orientated character - not forcing cav to be agi stackers only.

2) Give tier 3-4 horses more variety and use.

Make the rouncey a cheap all rounder (increase its hp, armour and charge to courser level). Increase Palfrey speed by one, reduce manoeuvre by two.
Give the steppe horse more speed and less manoeuvre and more hp (+8,-7,+5, so 46,42,90). Give the desert horse one more manoeuvre.

3) Increase tier 6 (cata, charger, mamluke, plated) horses manoeuvre and speed by 2 points each. Increase their armour by 10 and hp by 15, and charge by 2.

4) Sort out warhorse and large warhorse. Give warhorse +1 manoeuvre, +5 armour, +5hp, and give large warhorse +1 speed, +5 armour, +10hp, +2 charge.

5) Include horse scale stat in equipment menu - it does have an effect in choosing a horse.

6) Increase price of all unarmoured horses by 25%, increase price of all armoured horses by 50%.

So then you'll see fewer players with the ubiquitous courser/arabian. You'll see more people choosing lower tier horses, and actually making a decent choice between them - rouncey for all round stats, palfrey for speed, or one tier up: steppe for speed and desert for manoeuvre.
You'll see even fewer armoured horses, but they'll actually be worth the cost for a change.
You'll also see cav nerfed, because of even more crippling costs, and higher difficulty. More common weaker horses (tier 2-4) will mean they die faster and are less effective.
Unarmoured horses will be forced to play more support roles and not charge around racking up kills. Armoured horses will be devastating, but so expensive people will cry.

None of that solves the issue that some types of cav are far more effective than others (both in cav vs cav and cav vs inf fights), but I'd rather see all cav nerfed (and some types hit far harder) than the current situation. It won't stop lance cav being more effective than all other types, or 1hand shield cav being more effective than 2hand cav, but then that's the way its always been (except for a brief period when lance rotation was locked).
This may also make horse archers more effective, since they'll be shooting weaker horses, and can afford far more upkeep than other cav.

Anyway, I'm sure you're glad you read all that. Discuss etc.

Sell/Trade / [SELL] Training
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:16:46 am »
So, I'm selling athletics training.

We all know that once you reach 7 athletics the normal trainers can't help you any more. I'm a Master Athletics Trainer - I can get you to 10 athletics.
To find me, speak to the advanced trainer about 'Training'.

It will cost you 100*(skill level) for each level of training.

One more thing; in order for me to train you, I require that you have discovered at least 30 places (you can check in your map to see if you've found enough).

(I can also train block skill to 100, but to prove yourself worthy you must survive for 40 seconds while I hit you with my warhammer).

PM me if interested.

Scene Editing / Maps!!!
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:58:34 am »
Hey, I don't know where else to complain about maps, so I made a special topic to flame mapmakers in.

There are a few new maps in the EU1 rotation that I'd like to see either removed, or vastly improved. No offence to the mapmakers in question, I'm glad there are people who do this, but you need to design your maps better.

So, firstly: indigocylinder.

Your maps are generally very laggy. Please optimise them better.

Of the ones I played:

Boulevard: This map is too big. Most of it never gets used. A lot of time ends up being spent chasing the other team around the map. Aesthetically its really dull - my eyes hurt from all the cobblestone textures. Also, its laggy.

Frontier: Again, far too big. 90% of the map never gets used. And why did you add a fort? The teams either camp the fort or camp the village. Again, laggy.

Cradle: For some reason you decided to add a million trees for lag fun. Also, why add the tower? Endless camping. The village area is ok, but the teams are forced down the same three routes each time.

Dryport: This map is really boring. There's no option for cav, and the infantry are funnelled into the same two chokepoints each time. The only room for manoeuvre is for archers and xbowmen, who camp the roofs. Not fun at all. Plus, as with all your maps, it lags.

Your maps seem to be focused around a concept, but disregard optimisation and playability.

Secondly: Thranduil

We only have one of your maps on EU1 I think, however its the one I hate most. Its called Burning of the Ships.

It is really, really poorly designed. You have two camp spots (the gateways), both near the team's spawns. There are only 3 possible routes to reach the enemy from those spots. You can either walk along the walls, being shot at all the time, and meet in the middle for a melee clusterfuck with no room to manoeuvre (good for shielders and hammerers I guess), or try to travel down one of the other two routes, which will get you shot. There is no-where to avoid being shot beyond camping the gatehouses, and the ranged troops on the walls are protected by virtue of being on the walls.
Horrible, horrible map. People need space to move around in a fight, and they need a place to hide from ranged troops.

Again, really good that there is a mapmaking community, but please make better maps. And can the bad/laggy ones be removed?

There are a few other new maps I'd whine about, but I can't find the authors. All the pics of the maps I have whined about are in the Finished Maps thread.

General Discussion / cRPG Items [NSFW]
« on: April 17, 2011, 11:42:29 pm »
So, answer the poll.

If every item in cRPG except 13th century (the period M&B Warband is based on) items were removed, would it ruin the game for you?

For example, this would mean removing items like the plate armours.

Feel free to discuss, as well.

He's a trouble maker.

He sells weapons to anti-chadzian political insurgents.

He thinks he's funny, but his posts are really boring.

Suggestions Corner / Shoes (suggestion)
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:25:20 am »
Would it be possible for someone to take the bride shoes, colour them blue, and introduce a new item called 'blue suede shoes' please?

They can have the same stats as the bride shoes. It would really enhance the mod.

Thanks in advance.

General Off Topic / Warband duel tournament
« on: February 07, 2011, 04:47:29 pm »
Just a small announcement about the duel tournament.

If you want to enter, click on the link in my sig.

It's a chance to duel some of the best players in Warband, test your skills and all that stuff. It is in native, so remember, you won't be able to use a flamberge.

It is also European (on the Nditions server), but don't let that put you off if you're American - IG_M won an American duel tournament despite being European and having bad ping.

Also, maybe it's a chance to prove to certain Native naysayers who claim all cRPG players are useless spammers that you're actually just as skilled as them? See - its like an epic film, where a poor cRPG player, laughed at by all those native veterans, gets a chance to prove themselves and maybe win the tournament! I can't imagine anything more exiting.

Anyway, if you're interested, click on the link in the sig, and sign up.

General Off Topic / A new child board please (vote in the poll!)
« on: January 26, 2011, 09:31:17 pm »
Hello moderators of these wonderful forums.

I'm requesting a new child board called 'Existentialist Dilemmas and Gaming'. I would like to use it to discuss existential dilemmas (also existential dread, existential confusions, and existential absurdity/and or bemusement), and how those aforementioned topics relate to gaming (by which I mean playing games, an example of which is cRPG).

This sort of discussion doesn't belong in the General Off Topic thread (it's too specific), nor does it belong in the spam section (it isn't spam, it's very serious), and it doesn't belong in the Historical Discussion area.

I feel that many of the players of cRPG will have something valuable to contribute to this topic. In fact, I think that it would be so popular that it needs it's own separate section.

Thanks in advance!

P.S: If this isn't possible, there is a good chance that I will either send threatening PMs (to randomly selected users, three per day) or go on a meaningless posting spree.

Suggestions Corner / Shop stats (suggestion)
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:20:45 am »
So, here's a suggestion to improve gameplay:

In the cRPG shop, take away all the info about the weapons and armour, and replace it with non-specific information. Some of the info can be kept (requirement, name of weapon, picture of weapon). The rest gets replaced.
Cost gets replaced to a range - so instead of price: 134, it's price: 100-150 range.

To give an example, using the Long Iron Mace:

Long Iron Mace   Price Range: 3500-5000
weight Quite Heavy (a maul would be described as Very Heavy)
requirement 11
spd rtng Quite Fast (where a katana would be described as very fast, or a maul as very slow)
weapon length Fairly Short (while a Flamberge would be Very Long)
swing damage Medium (the type of damage can be removed)
thrust damage Low

The special flags are removed completely to add to the fun.

The designations (i.e. damage: very low, low, medium, high, very high) would only be relevant to the weapon category, so a Flamberge has Very High damage for a 2hander, but this can't be compared to very high for xbows, for example.

This way people will have more fun shopping for weapons (they won't have to concentrate on stats, and each weapon will be a mystery for them until they use it enough and gain familiarity with it). Players can buy items more for their look, and if they want to find the best weapon they'll have to spend a lot of money and time testing to try to deduce the correct values. I think it would make a lot of people more relaxed about making their characters.

As another bonus, threads about nerf/buff weapons will be reduced drastically. A more harsh option would be to remove all item info except a price range, requirements, and a picture. I think it'd increase the fun of the game because of the mystery element. Where a player might have overlooked a weapon because of it's stats previously, this time they will buy it, use it, and come to love it (realising in the process that skill/practice makes more difference in their fights than a few more points of damage or speed). Also, people will make mistakes, which will increase gameplay content for them - they'll have to realise their mistake and sell the item, and try another one.

For armour, all that is needed is a picture, the strength requirement, and a cost described as very cheap/cheap/average/a little pricey/pricey/damned expensive. People will have to judge the weight and protection by the picture, adding yet another challenge for even more fun.

For ammo, the quantity doesn't need to be shown, nor does damage. For ranged weapons, you can change the stats to general descriptions in a similar way. The same goes for horses.

For extra fun, you could add a short description to an item (for example: Courser; 'Said to be the fastest horse in all Calradia!'), or a quote from a satisfied customer (e.g.: 'This Wimple with Veil has served me well through many battles, protecting my head from hails of bolts, arrows and thrown weapons. I am very happy with my purchase, and would recommend it to anyone seeking reasonably priced and fashionable head gear!').

Feel free to comment on this suggestion. Though if you disagree, I will send threatening PMs.

Only historical debate.

No spam.

No wikipedia references.

No youtube videos.

No references to non-peer reviewed online articles.

Reference all sources to an academic standard.

If your argument is not supported by sources (they can be from your own research, as long as it is published), your post will be deleted.

Good luck making a case that doesn't rely on wikipedia and youtube articles :) First person that does, gets an honorary degree in History from the university of cRPG.

Spam / LLJK vs Gorath

So, your battlegrounds keep getting locked. Can you argue more please? It's very entertaining!

One man (Gorath) vs lots and lots of jolly posters. If I were in LLJK I'd be ashamed that one self professed troll can fend off a horde of performance artists and stand up comics. You all need to try harder.

But seriously, more arguments please!

General Discussion / Strategus...
« on: January 07, 2011, 12:03:10 pm »
So, how is the cRPG patch going to affect Strategus?

Lower levels in Strat battles, archery is different, grind money is less etc...

Discuss!

Or, alternatively chadz can post here exactly how it'll affect Strategus now and what future plans there are for cRPG/Strategus interaction, but its very unlikely.
