Title: Sandbox mulitplayer games
Post by: Tristan on December 14, 2011, 02:21:30 pm
Do we have such a thread?

I'd like to hear about your experiences, is any of them worth playing besides EVE, Minecraft & Terraria? (And lets not discuss that one.)

I know some golden ones are dead, but what is still alive and worth spending some time on?

Ugh, good multiplayer sandbox games are pretty much non-existant. I've tried countless, hard to say which one is worth the time. I'd give Haven&Hearth or Wurm a go, if you haven't already.

I'm interested if anyone else found something worth playing too, as this is my favourite game type. Till then I'm spending time playing Dwarf Fortress (head explode).

I'll wait with heaven&Hearth until their follow up, Salem, arrives.

What made you not play Wurm? (Haven't tried it yet).

Mostly time. I heard it takes quite a while to actually make something of worth there and I just didn't have the time to play it (I'm always playing multiple games, but sometimes you just have to cut a game or two because there's too many).

Definately H&H. I don't think I've ever been sucked into a game as much as with H&H.

Ultima Online is a good game, I played IPY for a while. Not really a sandbox for me though.

This graph fails. This graph shows that Eve online can be mastered in a significantly shorter time than the other MMORPGS listed. You can even get some time back while increasing in skill. After a very short time there is no increase in skill anymore, so this game must be very easy to master.

well I follow sandbox mmos keenly.

I recently heard about this one called life is feudal and am pretty hyped. I mean watch this pre alpha demo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KErvQIYa7A

They are trying to make a H&H/M&B mmo, pretty much my dream game. cant wait. EDIT yeah I seen a few from crpg and other games on thier forums

Best out:
darkfall
mortal online
xsyon (better than H&H imo, needs work tho)
H&H

Comming out:
salem (H&H 2)
darkfall 2.0
archeage (eventually in europe)
life is feudal (hopefully)

I haven't tried wurm, meant to be absolutely insane grind. like 100x worse than darkfall. so think i'll pass.

I hope salem comes out soon after my exams, been a long time since an actually interesting mmo came out.

Xsyon was cool around launch, but I stopped playing because of the 15 or whatever a month.

yeah I played with some friends at "launch" we had fun but didn't play that long. game had no content really. I still follow development but am a bit disapointed don't think they've really made much progress. they actually added directional attacking and blocking but from what I see in videos it still doesn't look very good. I reckon xsyon is better than H&H tho.

theres some things about H&H I really hated, like how you had to grind your ass off and to buy skills which allow you to actually play the game, ie pvp. it goes against the whole point of a sandbox for me you should be relatively free not have artifical restrictions, in some ways H&H is more restrictive than themepark games. they did improve exp system alot when I re-tried the game recently, ie you study stuff instead of repeating same actions to get exp.

Im looking forward to playing salem, I know some of my guildies will play it. but I don't dig the visual style or the combat system. and I don't think it will that different to H&H, from what I've seen its 90% identicle.

Gotta be honest, I've been playing H&H for 1 to 2 years before since the very first multiplayer and it just updated slower than the slowest snail that you shouldn't even bother following Salem. (Although H&H was really excellent being with the strongest towns all around with endless raids. (Wayneville, Circle of Phoenix, Sodom, Pandemona and so on) Then everyone quit the game after those.  :P)

Unfortunately, Haven and Hearth quickly becomes a MASSIVE grind.

True, which is why I quit.

im playing h&h atm, trying to get further than i did last time so much of the game I have not played, because its way too grindy. often just way fucking too complicated or painstaking. parts of the game I love, parts I seriously hate. also seems like the game is only really fun after a wipe, right now whole world is covered in claims.

you shouldn't have to grind for months to buy skills that allow you to play the game (pvp etc.) so game is kind of more restrictive than any other. I do look forward to trying salem but so many things plain wrong with H&H which wont change.

i used to play call of combat a lot, but very long time ago. at that time it was a game that really needed a lot of skill, even after a few months you couldn't call yourself a good player.

haven't played it for maybe 3-4 years so i dunno what is the current stage. at the time when i quit the game they made some changes i disliked that made the game easier for newbies (easier sniping...).

basicly everybody controls a squad of 4 men in a multiplayer battle where u try to outflank the enemy or rush his weakened positions by nading to get your men into better firing spots. there is a lot of teamwork and organization involved in this game. if commander says there some battle plan, everybody just does it with almost no exceptions.

if u give it a try please PM me what the current state of the game is, ty
