Title: How long can the cRPG community survive?
Post by: Johammeth on April 28, 2014, 05:16:09 am
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I've always wondered what kind of a clusterfuck society would be like if NA cRPG people acted like NA cRPG people IRL.

I am using the real life simulator game Dwarf Fortress to answer that question. (For those of you who don't know, Dwarf Fortress is a 2d village builder/survival game where everyone is a useless alcoholic dwarf just seconds away from a complete mental breakdown. AKA, the cRPG community).

I'll be updating this thread as the disasters unfold. I'll need a steady stream of players to add to the game, so please drop names of people I should put in.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADIEU:

Much suffering is ahead. My popcorn is ready.

So NA has been turned into a massive mess of absent-minded, depressed, alcoholic midgets with beards? Nothing seems to of changed, besides the scenery.

Wolfsblood - An incredibly gifted pump operator. She is married to Sandy. She has a thin body with very little fat. She absolutely detests leeches.[/spoiler]

Stone gathers, and now my door making begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my door making post. I am the door in the darkness. I am the stone on the door. I am the door that guards the realms of dorfs. I pledge my life and honor to the door, for this door and all the doors to come.

Stone-smoother Jona, reporting for duty! I have a variety of experience as an artist in the past, and I hope you find some of my prior masterpieces to be worthy of your fine halls!

My personal favorite is my self portrait, done in watercolor... please consider allowing me to engrave it in the finest of marble so that I may forever be a part of your fine realm!

If you need further proof of my artistic skills, I shall be more than happy to provide my various other pieces.

/rp

P.S. Since this is all about whether or not we will survive, you it would be great if you could have a "RIP in Peace" list of all the dearly departed at the bottom of your post. I would do it here, but frankly I think it would get more exposure being part of the OP.

Thanks for doing a playthrough of DF, I love following them. I can never actually bring myself to sit still and learn DF. I occasionally play roguelikes, so I can deal with the ASCII interface. It's just the massive learning curve that keeps me from playing it.

Reminds me of trying to play Sim City on hard when I was like 8 years old.

I believe the camel is actually still hanging on to life.

Also, I really enjoy an ASCII game I've been playing since I was like 10 called Ancient Domains of Mystery. You can download at adom.de. Best rpg ever.

Yesssss, that's my thing. I love games like that. For anyone reading that wants to try a roguelike but can't stand all-text ASCII graphics, try out Stone Soup (http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/). It has a nice graphics tile set that makes it easier to get into. If you like turn-based dungeon crawls check it out!

Rather than wearing the garrison issued copper helm, isatis decides to wear a wool cap. This works for a time; the light cap allows her to bite the goblin in the ankle and rip out the motor nerves. However, it is powerless to stop the goblin's dagger from crashing through his skill and making a mess of the brains. RIP.
Darling! NO!

The gobblin scratches Rhuarc's ear off.
Look on the bright side papa. Dwarf women love battle scars!

...

Uuuhgh.  At least the breweries were working all that time and now we have plenty of booze.
At this point, I'm likely to go crazy and drink all of it.

James and Isatis (as well as any who succumb to their wounds over the coming months) your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

I am hereby announcing "The James and Isatis Monument to the Savagery of Tethered Goblins." your bodies shall be interred in a great Mausoleum that shall safeguard future generations against such foolish and unnecessary deaths.

For you see the Mausoleum will double as a vast floodable and drainable chamber within which captured Goblins will be tethered and drowned for the amusement and satisfaction of your departed spirits.

And I have found my place of suicide. I shall drown in the Mausoleum of my husband!

You enter the "James and Isatis Memorial to the Savagery of Tethered Goblins." You bow your head in respect for all the brave that have fallen. As you gaze upon the ground, your eyes drift over to a peculiar piece of art...

(click to show/hide)

It is probably the only time you have ever seen someone engrave the floor, and then proceed to paint over said engraving. However, you find it fitting that such a worthy person has a place that will always draw peoples' gaze away from those of less import.

You can use the graphics pack among others which Johammeth is using, which is MUCH better than the original.. But still. I would Love a amssive graphics overhaul for this game which makes it much more user friendly and easier to look at what you're doing, etc but it would probably be a really shitty remake :( ^^ sry double post

But... but... someone else engraved you, right? Not to mention idk what your character looks like. And these take longer than you think... I don't even have a mouse, lol. Gotta use my crappy laptop's thumbstick thingy. If I find the time later, and whoever drew you in the game real life simulator doesn't draw you, I might be able to.

It looks like a Dwarf Fortress clone with better graphics, but a little less depth.

Does anyone have experience with this game and could give a recommendation?

Yes, less depth. It's currently in Beta so the dev keeps updating and adding things. Now there is diplomacy and ambassadors, etc. Just not much you can really do, doesn't get nearly as detailed as DF, but much more user friendly, looks good, and is fun up to a point.

Isatis's weapon struck true 8 times, the bronze scimitar lodging in the goblins liver and severing the motor nerve. He then punched it in the left hand so hard that the goblin's bones shattered.

Yesss

Rather than wearing the garrison issued copper helm, isatis decides to wear a wool cap. This works for a time; the light cap allows her to bite the goblin in the ankle and rip out the motor nerves. However, it is powerless to stop the goblin's dagger from crashing through his skill and making a mess of the brains. RIP.

WHAT :O

NOOOOO I can't be dead?? How can Thranduil take care of herself now??!!

Well

At least I got a memorial...

The James and Isatis Monument to the Savagery of Tethered Goblins

May I be a warning against not using solid metal helmet!!

I give you the ballad of Baron Shana of Slapmerchant, Hammerer: Fortress Executioner.

They’ll be dead and dying camels when he comes,
He’s a hero to Slapmerchant more than San,
His limp wrist won’t seclude him from any goblin intrusion,
He’s quite contempt to stomp out goblins with his shins.

They’ll build a memorial for killing camels when he dies,
That each and every dwarf can watch with pride,
May the withering arm of justice continue to protect us,
His leg mallets get much stronger with each stride.

Be thankful, so far being mentioned has rarely ended up being a good thing lol

This is true, and I have survived the last 16 chapters because of it; however, since I have no children, my husband is dead and my papa is likely to follow some day soon from a goblin sneaking up on him (he's hard of hearing on one side), I need something to occupy myself with. Also, with the recent camel revolution, I feel I should bring this up:

Thranduil. She is married to isatis. She is the daughter of Rhuarc. She likes two-humped camel bone. She lives for risk and excitement. She is highly adventurous and loves fresh experiences. (I'm almost certainly going to put her to work as a camel hunter for this profile.)

Canary has given birth to a baby boy!

His name is Cochon. He likes pigs for their sense of smell. He is 0 days old. He needs alcohol to get through the working day.

Canary successfully predicted what a pushover the invaders would be, and even brought Baby Cochon along.

A goblin maceman decided to play croquet with the one week old dwarf. Cochon miraculously survives the encounter with nothing worse than a few bruises.

The rest of the army has arrived by now. The final goblin, sensing his imminent doom, tries to pad his KDA. He picks Baby Cochon out of the pack and dives for him.

The journal of DrTaco (It appears to be stained heavily with some sort of alcohol) : Day 548

(Date Unknown, which is strange because the entire journal is just named 'Day 548'): These fools have still not discovered that i'm actually not a woman. The child I stole from that incompetent (And most likely drunk - which sadly I am not at the moment) woman has not figured out that I am a man either. Probably because I keep losing him when I go to get drunk (He keeps drinking all my booze. Not my fault) - which reminds me. I need to go get drunk soon. I suppose these heavy cloaks and hoods do well to conceal myself. I will make note of this and bring it to the Overlords as soon as I am able to make my escape.

(Date Unknown. In fact, every date is unknown. There's no structure or anything in here. Much like this fortress): Taser, my (possibly insane) informant, has gone off the - Wait. Yea, he's dead. Well that sucks. Oh well, he didn't finish his drink. More for me. In other news this stupid kid might be the death of me. I must find a way to have him suffer an 'accident'. And I really want to leave this place now. I don't even know why I was sent here to spy on these ignorant morons in the first place - they keep drinking all the booze and everyone is dying all the fucking time! Also, the child named Cochon appears to be made of some sort of godlike metal. I should probably steal him next. Though maybe this kid I stole might have the same properties - I should start testing that theory when everyone starts running into the dining hall.

...

Is there a dramaturge-like role in Dwarf Fortress?

Hmm. Guess not. Then I'll just sit back and enjoy.
Well, the nobles like Barons and stuff can do stupid demands on certain items to be produced and then punish random dwarfs when the fortress fails in producing absurd items, like if the noble wants adamantine toys to be made then the noble will probably punish a fisherdwarf or doctor. Much drama occurs.

Consider me confused... wtf just happened?  :P

We discovered weird building full of zombies deep under the earth.

After clearing it out, Noodles decided it would be a good idea to pick up the conspicuously-shiny sword sitting next to the conspicuously glowing tile in the floor.

It wasn't a good idea, as the room (and fort) quickly flooded with horrible creatures from beneath the glowing barrier.

And things only went downhill from there.

Man, I do my darnedest to stay alive this entire time, only to die off-screen? Phooey!

My only solace is that my artwork will endure for ages. The next "long lost underground city" full of undead mosquito-men or were-capybaras, or maybe even zombie dwarves, may very well show "taser's dehydration" in all its glory. I can only hope that somewhere out there is a civilization full of hardy dwarves who make the mistake of digging too deep and wander into that glorious drowning chamber dedicated to james and isatis taser.

Anticlimactic ending, 1/10. :P

goblins are attacking and they took out two of the dwarfs. The game is very addicting. Even without the crazy events I find it is a blast to play. I tried DF and could not get into it at all because of the graphics. This one is easy to jump right in. The only issue I have is after you play for a while it seems to have a memory leak that bogs it down something fierce. Need a full reboot to clean it up. After the reboot it plays smooth again.

I wish I had kutts story telling skills to help the community get its fix but I will not even attempt to recreate that magic.

Well I can now say it can get out of hand rather quickly I armed and armored my gnomes and even trained them a little when they had time. I only have 11 gnomes to work with here since it is pretty early on. I built a snazzy wall and put in a stone door thinking it will keep nasty things out...

A bear came to visit and killed the door in about 2 seconds. Then it was loose inside my farming area. I told all my battle gnomes to gear up and charge. 11 deadly gnomes against one stupid bear. I was rocking stone weapons and 1-2 with copper armor and swords. When all was said and done blood was everywhere. 7 gnomes lay dead the rest ran off to the hospital. The Bear's name change mid fight from bear to Jeb the Griffen apparently earning a title for killing gnomes with ease. The best part is no one officially killed the beast. After killing everyone who did not run like a little bitch it walked around for a few minutes celebrating. It then died from blood loss just to show me that gnomes can not kill Jeb the Griffen he is the only one strong enough to kill himself.

I will continue to play to see if I get a big influx of gnomes (only got 2 the first time) if not I guess I will be starting over.

Well, in my current Dwarf Fortress game, this happened:

The only way into the courtyard of my fortress is across a draw bridge which crosses a moat.  This was the last goblin out of a group of 10 that attacked me, most of his comrades got caged, two got dropped into the water and drowned when I closed the bridge.  She was stuck inside my courtyard so I sallied out the BEARS OF WAR (they have two war trained grizzly bears in their squad) and my hammerer was very clearly upset by the death of the puppy.

Needless to say, the front entrance to my bridge is now covered in a thick pool of goblin giblets.

edit:  Turns out both bears are female, just waiting on the first batches of baby war bears.
