Router issue

So yeah, I got this problem with my cisco that I just couldn't solve, wired connections don't work neither on my laptop or my PC, I can't open anything or access the router admin page (192.168.1.1), or ping said address when I'm wired to it.
(pinging 192.168.1.1 when wired gives timeout or host unreachable, while wireless pinging works, I gave up on this)

Currently I'm using wireless on the laptop, it's working just fine.

But since it's only me using the bloody network in the first place, and I want to access web on my PC, I decided to plug it in directly through the modem to my computer, but it says that the cable is not plugged in, and I don't get a PC/Activity light, only with the router I get it operational.

It's a motorola surfboard modem, not that it matters.

I remember years ago when the router was added I noted what to do, but I forgot so I thought I may ask here:

Is there anything specific you need to do when removing a router device and you want to move back directly to your cable modem?
I guess it needs to 're-find' the PC physically, because now it defaults to my cisco, but turning it off and on did jack shit.

The router is pretty much pointless for me right now, so it would be a good riddance either way.

So there's not even a PC connection light on your modem? Are you sure the cable is fine? Try with a spare cable, some wires might be fucked if nothing is showing, or it might be your network card. Otherwise, do you have an ip address entered in your network settings, or is it set to get it automatically:
win key+R, enter 'ncpa.cpl', check local area connection properties, ipv4

tried with all kinds of fucking cables the last days, nothing worked.

the same cable makes the router work, so I think it only sees the MAC address of the router and blocks my laptop and computer from direct access to the modem.

they are set on automatic IP, with DHCP and all that shit.

So router works with modem, but both your laptop and pc don't work directly on modem? Or is it just one that doesn't work directly to modem?

Both the laptop and computer give the same results, cable not plugged in.

I think these modems can only remember ONE device, right? So currently it thinks my router as the primary device to use, but I want my computer to be that.

I don't really think the Network Card of both laptop/pc died, that is just very unlikely.

I have seen routers die the other way around, you could access and ping it wired but not wireless no matter what you try, so I think it broke, and I want to move on without it :D

I take it you tried to reset the modem already? Some modems can only remember one machine, yeah. If resetting didn't work, you might have to call your ISP to tell them you have a new MAC address connected to your modem, and they should set it up for you.

Yeah as I thought, it only has two MAC addresses shown under 'addresses', its own, and the router's.

so I might have to factory default it from there, or something.

Have you tried all the ports on the modem? If it's provided by your ISP, might be that some of the ports are disabled, ISPs tend to do that, because they usually also only provide you with only one or two IP addresses.

Some modems have a quite "hidden" reset button, it can look  like this
(click to show/hide)

My old modem reset button was "internal", you had to use a pen or a toothpick to press it and hold the button for like 10-20 seconds, and then the modem resetted  to factory default settings.

Have you tried resetting like this? Assuming your modem  has that button

I do have a motorola myself.


Hardcore reset:

 - Press the factory reset button at least 30 secs, yes really....  (optional, only if it has a reset button :D )
- unplug power cable from modem and router
- wait 30 secs
- connect power cable again
- wait until all lights are on ("power", "send" and "online" at least, dunno which version you have but I do have them)
- 192.168.100.1 now, then go to the internal configuration utility, there should be also a "Reset to default" button.

In case your browser is unable to display the page, try to connect the modem directly through the ethernet port with the laptop.
This should actually work, otherwise there must be definitely a provider problem...


I guess you did all of that already but there is nothing more you can do if it really doesnt work, so ye... call the support
