No, it's not Steam's fault. Steam doesn't make the updates, Taleworlds does. The update is to facilitate the Napoleonic DLC tomorrow, I assume.
Modding has it's ups and downs, and the frailty of the balance becomes apparent when something like this happens.
Taleworlds is in no way obligated to tell the community when a patch is to come.

Taleworlds released a patch for Warband and because of how WarbandScriptEnhancer works, it fucked every mod that uses it up. (I know Vikingr uses WSE, so I am taking a guess that they are pretty screwed aswell.)
